    I'm filling and painting doors atm on an Edwardian property. If I miss a scratch or hole, I'm just putting it down to the character of the building. I see so many makeovers where they take the heart out of the building, when I love the quirks and imperfections. Looking forward to seeing the final shaowing.

    Good work, Andy. I've been in my house for 6 years now. We did a lot of work to it, much like yours, with new plumbing, new bathrooms, laundry, additions, wiring, etc. and I still haven't finished all the little bits! My wife is hinting at buying a new place so guess what I've been doing all summer! Little bits! Hope you're still enjoying the process. Cheers.

    For anyone getting carpets fitted from one of the big name shops, get your own underlay and gripper rods. Our local big name carpet place charge £2 per metre for gripper rods and £11 per sq m for 10mm pu underlay. Local carpet supply place (accessories tools etc) charge 25p per metre and £3-4 per sq m for the same underlay.

    Interesting one for you about the spiders; they're cellar spiders. And they mostly eat other spiders. So that might be why you're seeing them and not others! They also leave their webs which is a pain. Other spiders don't always do that.

    Well done Andy, it's looking really good, and will look so much better with carpets down. It's a really good point about being ready for any tradesperson come to work on the house. It is useful if you know what sorts of things they need to be in place to do their work. One benefit of them coming to site to quote for work is that you can ask any questions about what state they need the property in to make their job easy. You are paying for their time, so you really want the job to go as quickly and smoothly as you can!

      @@GosforthHandyman Leyland contract white is meant to be used on fresh and wet plaster. This is why it is chalky. I learnt that by watching some videos by Skill Builder who went to the Leyland paint academy. There are several issues with this paint. I learnt the hard way after doing several coats on a whole upstairs of a house. 1). Chalky finish. 2) Rubs of the wall easily with damp clothes. 3). Coverage on darker colours or stains is poor.. 4). Sometimes bubbles appear in paintwork. 5). Allow to dry at least 6 hours before a second coat or it can pull off previous coat leaving a mess on wall and roller. Use the layland vinyl Matt white about £30 a tin. The difference is amazing. Covers better. Paints better. Less coats than the contractor. For wood top coat use Dulux white satinwood. Great stuff. Less shine so the wood blemishes are not so pronounced. Paints really well on Leyland acrylic primer undercoat. Lovely series. Keep going Andy

    I think I would have decorated (or at least filled the skirting boards) before laying carpets. Myself. Time issues? RAAT (room at a time. Move into one room, expand as work progresses.)
    BTW Craneflies ('daddy longlegs') are insects of the family Tipulidae, not arachnids.

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bear in mind skirtings are coming back off when new hardwood flooring goes down, so really no point. 👍

      @@GosforthHandyman Hardwood flooring after carpeting? ?? Think you must have shown rooms that are not being carpeted... where you have delayed flooring in order to fit skirting boards that you are then going to remove and refit. That sounds like double handling, usually regarded as a no-no.

    Carpet in the dining room? Won’t that just hold crumbs? I vaguely recall carpets in our dining room growing up (in Canada) until we renovated in the early 90s but as an adult now, I can’t imagine carpet in an eating area.

    God I hate how electrians now put new sockets 2 feet or whatever above the skirting. Awful. They did this to my house as well. Rules are rules etc......

    • @johnavery15
      @johnavery15 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s for new builds. On older property you can put them at any height, especially if you need to match the existing sockets.

      @GosforthHandyman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's a good idea to put them higher up we had a couple that where upside down as the skirting was to low and would badly link the cable coming out the plug ,it's also a good idea in case of flooding as too many houses are now in flood zones

    • @johnv467
      @johnv467 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a personal choice and I was never given the choice. The Edwardian house I bought , had one electrical socket in the skirting which was underneath a radiator!
