True indeed. However, the racist taunts of his Jewish and Irish students was where i draw the line as a black man. Push all you want, but don’t attack someone’s ethnicity, religion, or race.
I never understood this argument. To me the movie is clearing showing that Fletcher’s way just leads to people becoming just as miserable and cold as him. Guy became a very skilled drummer but at the cost of his soul.
I mean, fletcher’s way literally led a student of his to commit suicide
I believe he definitely is a necessity but not for college. He needs his own private school for musical prodigies and those who will not compromise,knowing what they’re getting themselves into.

Gordon Ramsay was brought to tears by his mentor, Marco Pierre White. He pushed Ramsay to his breaking point, but he came out as one of the greatest chefs in the world. For many high achievers, putting up with that kind of abusive behavior is worth it if they’re able to become the best in their fields.

Miles Teller did 99% of his own drumming in Whiplash, with only some scenes requiring a drum double for certain intense moments. Mindblowing - talk about taking acting to the next level.

There’s a deleted scene where Fletcher is at his home, putting on jazz music, and then just sits on the couch, staring out spaciously.
So it’s possible that he’s all alone thanks to his passion, which can illustrate what Andrew’s fate could become.
Seeing this movie in the theatre legitimately gave me a panic attack, which I consider high praise for an incredible movie. In all the years I spent at the conservatory, I was never physically abused, but the rest of this shit was all too fimiliar, and Whiplash brought it back with a vengeance; a full 15 years after I graduated.

I’m a drummer! Jazz is hard! I tend to stick to rock, country, blues, that type of thing. So much respect for jazz drummers!
Yeah, I’m the same. I love jazz, but I’d have a really difficult time playing drums like that. It’s such a different way of thinking about rhythm & where the drums fit in the song.

can i ask you, how do jazz drums differ in concept? In other styles the drums lead by directly giving the other instruments a rhythm and tempo to follow together. My guess is that in jazz, that rhythm and tempo is not played, it is just repeatedly referenced. That lets the drummer sort of solo off the beat and lay down the beat at the same time - is that wrong?
It's astonishing watching some of the greats like Buddy Rich and Max Roach do their craft with ease yet it's mindboggling trying to comprehend what they were playing.
"Whiplash" has one of the craziest, perfect endings ever filmed.
The performance at the end is very Buddy Rich, when it's goes silent and Andrew is totally locked in.
Buddy Rich had a heart attack mid-solo and just locked in and played it through.
Ive been playing drums professionally in Louisiana Texas Arkansas and Oklahoma for almost 40 years. I love the feeling of being on stage and me the crowd is enjoying it and dancing and whistling hooting and hollering buying the band shots . Its a feeling that I can't describe explain . I enjoy your channel.

The ending to this movie is one of my favorites. You slowly see Fletcher starting to respect the kid and the final look basically states that he found his next prodigy.

Middle school band director threw a music stand a few times at our general direction and one time grabbed the chair out from underneath a horn player and made them fall. Not because we weren’t up to their musical standard, we did suck tho, but because we wouldnt stfu and we were little shits to them lol.
I've seen a music stand and baton thrown in my time by band leaders. This film is the extreme but Fletcher's mentality exists in the musical arts.

I’m one of the few thousands who actually went and saw this in the premiere, at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. Damien Chazelle is just incredible, one of the best movies of the 2010s.

I'm my opinion if "the next Charlie Parker would never be discouraged" there's no reason to put anyone down who might be him. There's no reason to treat humans as bad as Fletcher does.
There's no reason to mistreat people who will be great regardless. Same thing as the myth that Jimi Hendrix was great only because of weed, HELL NO. If that guy was clean and sober his whole life the world of music would have still been given his gift.

I can definitely see your point. I know I wouldn’t want to ever be treated the way Fletcher treated his students, but I know I’ll never be the next Charlie Parker in anything. The only time I was ever pushed that hard, though, was when I was in army basic training. The drill sergeants kicked the crap out of us, but I think I became a better soldier and person because of it.

I’m a drummer. I played in jr. high through college in marching band, jazz band, concert band, and steel drum band.
After college, I played in a couple of country bands. Haven’t played regularly in 20 years. I miss it.

I always believed they name-dropped Buddy Rich not just because he was one of the greatest drummers in history, but because he too was an infamous hothead. There are bootleg audio recordings (probably easily found here on YT) of him bawling out his musicians, where he kept complaining about the horn section blowing "F***ING CLAMS!" (which is now a common meme among musicians), and on one occasion stopping a tour bus and flat out kicking out one of the band members that he was angry at.

There's something dark about this ending, It feels like a triumphant moment, but when you look at the road Andrew took to get there it really is fucked up.. Being pushed to the point of having a mental breakdown for the sake of musical greatness...is the price worth it?
Yea not sure, lots of great musicians and bands push themselves sure but at the end of the day it’s about expressing yourself through sound. It’s not just playing the exact right note of the exact right time. The more technical knowledge you have the more freedom you have to express. It is a thought-provoking open ending, I lean more towards Fletcher being a menace but sometimes that kind of energy is needed For some to realize their true potential… maybe not as extreme though

What's crazy is that the ending isn't actually a happy one. In the end Fletcher wins, the whole abusive relationship ends like tragically many others do. The victim going back to their abuser. You see him instead of going into the arms of a loving father there to comfort him, he goes with Fletcher. Whether that be to prove him wrong, or to himself. The whole time in this movie they mention people who became legends had to pay a price. Many of them dying from a young age, even Niemens father mentioning it at the dinner table. The director himself says that Nieman Dies by age 30 from a drug over dose. The ending scene where his father is looking through the door at his son performing, the face he has isnt amazement or him being proud, at least not completely. It does seem more a face of shock and realization. He knew then and there that, yes he was proud of his son at the talent, but he knew Fletcher broke him and won in the end. Plays really well into the whole cautionary tale and the price of becoming the next greatest Musician. And yes Miles Teller Does a lot of his own drumming, using only few shots using a double. He's been playing since he was a kid, I think J.K Simmons said that when the director hired Miles he didn't know he had prior drum experience. He also said that they didn't really get paid much I think less than 200 dollars but they loved the script and wanted to be apart of it, after seeing this movie I can see why.
Fun fact: This film became pretty popular in Japan due to their cultural relatability. Where we look at Fletcher as possibly being too harsh on his players, they view it as normal to have someone demand that level of perfection to be their utmost best.

Jazz drumming is the most technical style. I'm a guitarist and played with many great rock & metal drummers but jazz drummers are next level . Jazz is a nightmare for any self taught ,non formally trained player . You can't just wing it .
We had a junior high band conductor that would scream at us. But usually his top band would rate #1 in the state band competition. He made me a better musician. I even one an award for most improved from him.

My absolute favorite drummer is a jazz-trained drummer who plays in a lot of post-hardcore bands while throwing in those jazz flairs that just doesn't get used a lot in rock. His name is Joseph Arrington, and the bands I usually listen to with him are A Lot Like Birds, Sianvar, Royal Coda, and Gold Necklace. I know he did a couple other projects as well but I haven't listened to those yet. And while I can't think of any black drummers in the rock/post hardcore/metalcore scene I follow, I do know that there is some pretty great representation on every other instrument if you're looking for that. Some names that come to mind are guitarist/occasional rap vocalist and harsh vocalist for one album cycle Will Swan of Dance Gavin Dance (and also a bandmate of Joseph Arrington as he also played guitar in Sianvar and Royal Coda), Tosin Abasi of Animals as Leaders (one of the current generation's guitar gods), Skyler Accord of Issues and also the touring bassist for Twenty One Pilots, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Howard Jones formerly of Killswitch Engage, vocalist AJ Channer of Fire from the Gods, and vocalist Kadeem Francis of the british metalcore band Loathe. All great musicians.

One of the deepest films you could see right here! Also those scars on the main kids face are from a real car crash he barely survived from, then they do one just like it in this film...lol I am a drummer (also a bassist as my dual main instruments) but I also play electric guitar and Keys. Plus do all my recording, editing, mixing, mastering, producing and shit too...lol Right now, I am experimenting by playing Electric Guitar (or bass guitar) and drums at the same time on my own. I did Drums and guitar last week this week I will try Bass and Drums at the same time alone. At my schools we had NO music classes or instruments so I never learned any instruments either! But I taught myself keys then bass then drums then guitar then how to record them then how to edit them then how to mix, then master then produce - here I am now, still a nobody but I have music I made on Spotify etc! I can not read music - I hear a song and can play it, or hear a song in my mind and can play it on the drums or bass or whatever even if I have never played it ever. I know the song well enough and I know the instrument well enough = just fkn play the song! So easy...
I started drumming 2 months ago and I am 29. I take classes at my local music school now. c:
