If you watch the opening carefully, you will see that Carl the Janitor was student of the year his senior year.
I never noticed that and I've watched this movie so many times. That's crazy😮
Yeah, I remember that clearly, too, in 1969. There’s a cut scene of him talking to them in the library that’s longer and he roasts each of them. I think it’s titled “The Breakfast Club - deleted scenes part 1” and I think there are two parts. I like that John Hughes used John Kapelos in Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, and The Breakfast Club. All memorable parts.

Also, some may film makers have been influenced by Jon Hughes, like Richard Linklater, Kevin Smith, Cameron Crowe... (It a long list so not even gonna try to name them all😊) that he should get the recognition from the academy which he deserves. Even though it won't mean anything to him now it would mean that in years to come the posterity would be there.
And the " I dont like Mondays" graffiti is from the Boomtown Rats song about a girl in the UK who shoots up a school.

I came up in the 80's and it rings so true. This movie is exactly what it was like going to highschool in the 80's.
I was hoping someone would say this. A buddy of mine used to always say "The Breakfast Club defined high school in the 80s!". It used to make me chuckle because he was a baby in the 80s, so how the hell would he know?! I was about 11 when this came out, and when my friend's sister had her basketball games, we would run around the school like they did in this film because some of the hallways had gates like the ones at this school. We'd recreate scenes from this movie all the time!
@@Crimsonams high school in the 80's was crazy! once, after a speech/debate tournament the after party was so much fun. we were all drunk, at a friends house, trying to explain "The Twightlight Zone" TV show to a german foriegn exchange student in the hot tub.

Even 40 years later, everyone in high school can relate to at least one of these characters. I hope this movie never gets a reboot.
They were planning on it a few years ago, but for whatever reason they weren't given rights to it. They ended up making a movie called 'The Class' which is supposed to be some kind of modern remake.
As far as Im concerned, this is the ultimate John Hughes movie. The man was an absolute master at capturing that balance of laughs, while still bringing that emotional weight when it was necessary. One of my favourite films of all time!
Love this movie this is the epitome of high school in the 80s.
Bender is supposed to be the "anti-hero", but by the end, he is THE HERO!!! He's the reason this ramshackle group came together to look at each other's problems and REALLY talk about them.
Bender is the kind of guy who ends up in jail or worse

@@galvinklatt5273 That what Principal Vernon would have wanted. In fact, I think Principal Vernon's days were numbered after Carl caught him looking through the personal files. Carl cared a lot more for those kids than Vernon did.

I've always found the saddest part of the movie is when Andrew got Allison to open up, asking, what do they do to you? And she answers, They ignore me.
For me, Alison had the 3 best moments: Allowing herself to confide in Andy that her parents ignore her (and props to him, having the OPPOSITE problem, to be able to empathize how that would suck for her); the makeover moment where she asks Clair in genuine confusion 'Why are you being so nice to me??' with Clair's momentary bewilderment and then the ridiculously simple and honest answer: 'because you're letting me." And finally, her defensive glare at Brian when he sees her post-makeover - then when he smiles in approval and admiration she so quietly whispers 'Thank you' to him....accepting the silent compliment and also validating to him that his approval - as a guy, even as geeky as he is - means something to her as a young woman.
Forty years ago when this movie came out sushi was considered gross or bizarre in the US and Europe. Now, it's so ubiquitous almost everyone seems to have at least tried it.

The movie is timeless, it deals with issues young people face in any generation. And the characters are just fun and lovable, while the contrast on their issues is very deep. Great stuff~
28:55 you hit the nail on the head with that comment. The movie is about five abused children who start out acting out their abusive patterns on each other, but then bond with each other and are able to start rising above those patterns and treating one another better.
Bender and Andy are both being physically and verbally abused (Bender more violently than Andy), Claire and Brian are being emotionally abused, and Allison is being neglected and probably sexually abused.
Was it confirmed Alison was sexually abused? I was like wow when you said that point
@@rebeccakimble5512 I don’t know that it was ever confirmed, but given the stats about CSA, it’s likely that one of the five kids had been victimized that way, and given her stories, she seems like the most likely candidate.
Was 15 years old when this movie came out, nobody but John Hughes understood my generation better.
Fun fact: John Hughes originally wrote Dumb and Dumber, but sold the screenplay to the Farrelly bros and told them to discredit his name

Benders character is hilarious, brutally honest. He brought out the worst and the best of all the other characters. In an era of shalowness and social masks when someone doesn't respect those etiquettes and goes for the kill and twist the knives its awesome. Its painful but its like 20 year of therapy in 9 hours he delivers. He changed all of these persons lives because he finds the abses and cuts it open and we all know how much that relieves pressure even if it hurts alot at first. They are plenty of already well established actors in that movie but Judd Nelson outclasses them all in a spectacular fashion. This movie is a timeless masterpiece. Great reaction too.

This might be THE MOST important movie for high school kids to watch. My 9th grade health teacher played this for us one time when he came in hung over, and it had a huge impact.
regarding Brian, my parents expected me to get perfect grades throughout school. anything less than an A on any grade reports meant being grounded until the next one. It definitely left me with a perfectionist problem to this day. I end up not attempting things if I think I can't do them perfectly.

The teachers volunteer for the Saturday's because it's overtime. So him giving Bender detention every week provides him the opportunity to make more money. His conversation with the janitor putting him in his place was golden.
This is why Gen X is the way we are. ALL adults were considered authority figures and they could treat us this way without repercussions. And we weren't allowed to express any emotion over it, even our facial expressions ( fix your face was something we heard often) had to remain pleasantly neutral.

Everybody eats breakfast- it’s not about the time of day. Breakfast is whatever food you eat first after breaking the fast from sleeping all night/ day depending on your schedule.
The Breakfast Club is the perfect coming-of-age teen comedy drama film that never gets old because we all had problems on our lives, but try to figure out a way to deal with them.
Also, an important thing to remember about John Hughes' films is to compare them to other teen films of the '80s. There were lots of them and they were all stupid comedies about sex and partying. John Hughes' films treated teen like actual real complex human beings, which that was new, amazing and always great soundtracks.
Every other john hughes movie besides home alone and planes trains and automobiles is about sex and partying. Just watch Hughes's second best coming of age movie "16 Candles" if you have any doubts,

It is Molly Ringwald's character, her first crush and her family forgetting her 16th birthday. Second, John Hughes has even more coming of age movies like "Some kind of Wonderful" and "Pretty in Pink". Then there's the classic 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off". He also did "Uncle Buck" and "Baby's Day Out". I was a teenager in the 80's and grew up watching his movies. There is no way I would describe them as just sex and partying, they had way more depth and meaning to them.

Hughes was the second most prolific writer at National Lampoon magazine when they were huge, he was co writer of Animal House and Caddy Shack with his coke buddie and the most prolific writer at national lampoon Doug Kenny(the man who did so much cocaine his behavior convinced chevy chase to check into rehab). The official policy on Kenny by his friends was he didn't commit suicide in Hawaii, he fell off the mountain accidentally before he found a good spot to jump from.
"Vacation" was based on John Hughes family vacation in 1959, he just moved it to the 80's for budget costs. Why did Ringwalds parents forget her birthday? a huge party called "A wedding" over shadowed it. "I guess all those people who thought we had to get married feel pretty dumb now eh Padre?"

Fun facts: Brian (Anthony Michael Hall) gets dropped off in the opening scene in a red 1984 Dodge Aries K sedan, with a vanity license plate reading 'EMC 2' (a reference to Einstein's equation). In the car are Hall's real-life mother (Mercedes Hall) and sister (Mary Christian). At the end, he's picked up in the same car, this time driven by the director of the movie, John Hughes.

Brian was Stressed out over his Grades and all the Pressure his Parents were putting on him about getting an Academic Scholarship so it would do him some good to chill a bit.
I had the biggest crush on Ally Sheedy (the quirky goth girl) after this movie came out. She's also in Short Circuit which came out a year after this movie did. That would be a fun movie for you to react to. You'll love Johnny.
Not to mention WarGames / St. Elmo's Fire (same year as The Breakfast Club, directed by the late Joel Schumacher) / Blue City / Betsy's Wedding* / Only the Lonely / Home Alone 2 / High Art / Single Drunk Female*!

I left home very young and lived in a house with 4 other runaway/"problem" kids. When this came out, i was probably "Brian's" age & me and my roomies always gathered around to watch this together, like if someone was sick... we'd all drag our pillows and blanlets to the living room, make the sick person soup and put this on. We'd also make drinking games out of it, or each choose a character and act along (i was always Bender lol) this movie is SUCH a major part of my youth, it's really wild to watch it again with you!
There are memes out there about how if this was set today, no one would have talked to each other, they'd all be on their phones😂 I'm glad i lived this era for many reasons, but thats a huge one!
Another funny tidbit, a friend i made later in life, lived right behind this high school they fimed at. He claims during set breaks, Judd Nelson would come over and smoke and blow lines with him & his roommate 😂😂 Bender wasn't a big stretch for him, apparently lol

You can get it with kelp around, no kelp, with philadelphia cheese, no cheese, that's up to you.
But, man, you gotta try it at least once. Dip it in soy sauce first.(But be mindful of wasabi, cuz that green ice-cream looking ish is spicy AF)

I was iffy on sushi too, but once I tried it, I now go like once a week for all you can eat. Lemon roll, shooting star are my favorite rolls. Only down side or maybe an upside that all sushi places aren't the same.

@It's mr Video another John Hughes movie, he grew up in the Midwest and so 90% of his films take place there. His dialog is so well done and so truthful and he was the first director to treat his young actors and their struggles and problems and hurt well. Though I don't make excuses for his disrespect toward the students, as I get older, I found Vernon to be an intriguing character.
In Vernon's conversation with Carl, he mentions that he has been a teacher for 22 years, and this movie takes place in 1984. So, Vernon started teaching in the 1960s. And he thinks it's the kids who have changed, putting all the weight on them. But really, Vernon is an example of an adult who blames the youth for being XYZ, while completely ignoring that it is _his_ generation who created the world that turned these kids into what they are.
The era of John Hughes movies...so good.

I also always related to Bender, he was like everyone I grew up with in NYC, poor and angry with dysfunctional families 🤣 I laugh but I’m not kidding 🤷🏻♀️
I was bored in the 1st 10 mins of this movie and was astounded by the end. It was phenomenal. And still holds up till today as so many kids have tough home lives which affect their own lives.

YEAH, WRESTLERS! I was a wrestling cheerleader in the 80s! Dated the captain of the wrestling team because we were socially supposed to date. I still love wrestling! Grandsons are starting to wrestle now in kindergarten.
No one knew more about the kids in the school than the janitors and lunch ladies.
Showed this movie to my wresting son when he was starting high school to make him understand the cliques in high school, especially since he had an unofficial assigned lunch table because they were the varsity wresting team. He didn't believe me, or this movie, until his first day of school when he was a freshman starter.

I was in 10th grade when this came out. The date of their detention is March 24, 1984 - my 14th birthday!
Everyone talks about how cute Molly Ringwald was in this but I always preferred Ally Sheedy. The quirky, mysterious girls always had my attention in high school, and the popular girls always seemed so cookie-cutter generic.
But Leo I'm glad you got to experience one of the great classics.
Leo, thanks for this great reaction. This is a movie that defines a lot of things about my generation and not a lot of reactors really get it. I watched this as a teenager and watching it as a grown up makes you think about the things you thought were important then and what wound up being important later. Does your heart die when you get older? For some, yes. For others, we live with heartache, pain but still try everyday to see a light at the end of our path. We are a bit of every one of the characters plus the changes in our times. We are the products of our lives. ❤
Pretty much everybody agrees that Allison looked better before Claire gave her the makeover.
The makeover didn't bother me as much because it was more about the girl bonding moment between them.
We knew Allison was ignored at home and basically had no friends so it allowed her to have a girly moment with Claire while getting some attention. It also allowed Claire to be nice to Allison and hang out with because she wanted to and wouldnt be judged for hanging with someone not in her status or social circle.
@@lirpa2300 Judd Nelson holds the same view of the makeover that you do, btw. And hey, if Andy and Brian do, in fact, get excited when they see Allison's new look (after probably only seeing her the other way for years), there's nothing "wrong" with that.

Pressure can be applied so many different ways, but it is still pressure. It doesn't matter whether you are talking about pneumatic, hydraulic, parental, peer, academic, etc., it all creates a force that presses against a thing or a person. It can be applied evenly across your whole life, or it can be aimed and directed at a singular event. It can guide you to make positive decisions and it can enrage you and lead to disastrous conclusions. The point is you don't have to know what is causing the pressure or stress in somebody's life to understand what it feels like. We all know pressure. Be compassionate and understanding to all. Great movie and great reaction!

This was THE movie of our generation. THis came out my senior year in high school. It hit so hard it all of us.....
My girlfriend had to drag me to see it. She had seen it with her friends already, and it had blown their minds. (I think the title of the movie just sounded "boring" to me or something.) Anyway, I of course ended up having my mind blown as well, and it instantly became one of my all-time faves. Thanks, Katie! (high school girlfriend). 😄

I was a senior in high school when this film came out, and it was a revelation for us at the time. there had been a lot of fun teenage comedies about getting laid and partying. and then there had been after school special about teen-age pregnancy, or my dad's an alcoholic, etc. but we hadn't seen a movie like this quite-a movie where the characters just talked to each other about what was going on from the good to the bad. again, it was incredible to experience this film as a teen-ager, when it was released. and it was a big hit! which was even cooler. thanks for going on the ride. and for being so real and truly empathetic to everybody. you really heard everybody's story, and saw why each person was where they were. more people should think and feel as you do, with such openness. thanks again. I've liked and subscribed.

I liked Allison the old way too. Clair's talent: she used the middle of her bra to secure the lipstick to her cleavage and put the lipstick on her lips that way.. This is one of my all-time favorite movies, thanks for doing a reaction to it!! Much respect and 420

Love this movie. I watched it when I was 13 and in my 80's phase lol. I could definitely relate to Allison as the quiet "goth" one in school.
