    The first one that came to mind was the Polo Grounds, I'm surprised he didn't clip in the Willie Mays catch over the head catch. No center field is even close to that amount of ground now and it might be the most iconic catch in the history of baseball

    Polo Grounds was literally right across the river from Old Yankee Stadium. There are some really good aerial shots of both hosting games at the same time in the same picture.

    Yeah, Tropicana field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays has a huge tank filled with manta-rays, which balls are sometimes batted into.

    "The rulebook states that parks constructed by professional teams after June 1, 1958, must have a minimum distance of 325 feet between home plate and the nearest fence, stand or other obstruction on the right- and left-field foul lines, and 400 feet between home plate and the nearest fence, stand or other obstruction" - MLB
    So basically between 325 and 400 ft to the fences, typically center field is further away from home than the other fences

    I live in Colorado, which is at high altitude. Because the air is thinner here, baseballs travel about 10% further than at sea level. So when they built the baseball park, Coors field, they made the dimensions all around quite large, to avoid too many home runs.
    As a result, the outfield is very large, with a lot of ground for fielders to cover. So, this creates all kinds of challenges for defenses, and salivating offenses.

    yes you can play baseball indoors, before Minute Maid Park the Astros Played in the Astrodome which was completely indoor facility! Been to many games at the Astrodome!!!

    I was at that 2008 exhibition game at the LA Coliseum. That was a special thing for the 50 year anniversary and even so much shorter than when the Dodgers played there in 1958 they still had the running track. In 2008 the track was gone so it was even shorter!
    There are a bunch of indoor baseball parks. Lots nowadays are retractable roofs but are closed most of the time in the summer for heat. Seattle is retractable (although more of an umbrella as air can still come in), so is Toronto, Houston, Miami, and Arizona. Tampa plays indoors. And yes that is a tank full of Rays in Tampa!

    They played a series at the London Stadium a few seasons ago, since the stadium is round and the seats for West Ham matches are removable it actually fit very well. I'm an American West Ham fan so it was kind of cool seeing an American sport being played in their stadium.
    Also I'm a Rays fan, and that water they hit the home run into in the Tropicana Field segment is a touch tank for stingrays. Fans can hang out and feed/pet real stingrays there.

  • @brianmoore6724
    @brianmoore6724 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    They've already played MLB games at West Ham. I'm sure you can google pictures of how the field will be set up for this year.
    They don't sell those seats at the top of the Oakland Stadium. They drew around 9,000 a game last year because there is a threat of them leaving and the stadium is old . But the sun isn't an issue as it's usually got a very very nice sea breeze being near the bay.
    The "standard" dimensions you'll see at ballparks are 325 down the lines 400 in center...That's the benchmark you'll see at most fields and stadiums built internationally. Usually it'll say 99 meters down the line and 120 to center, but in MLB there is a wide variety.
    The Polo grounds were just on the other side of the river from Yankee Stadium is now. It's now a large housing complex.

    • @BTinSF
      @BTinSF ปีที่แล้ว

      But as I pointed out in another video where these guys reviewed newer/better ballparks, baseballs float and you can see the one that goes in that fish tank floating. The issue came up regarding Oracle Park in San Francisco because when games are played there's a fleet of people in canoes and kayaks in McCovey Cove just beyond the right field wall waiting for home run balls.

    110m/330feet down the right and left field lines and 125m/410feet to center field is pretty standard, give or take a few feet. The average distance a home run is hit in MLB is122m/400feet. Yankee Stadium is only around 96m down the right field line and they call that a "short porch" and home runs are considered cheap. In 2019 the Yankees played the Red Sox at London Stadium if you want to see how the field was altered. Maybe you can react to highlights of that two game series.

    MLB dates back to 1876, when the National League was founded. There was professional baseball before then, but the National League is the beginning of the current league system.
    You can't grow grass in an indoor stadium with an opaque roof. There's not enough light. The Metrodome was an indoor stadium because of the weather, and because of that, it had artificial turf.
    The Expos stadium was supposed to have a retractable roof, but it didn't work reliably, so they abandoned the idea and kept it closed.
    The first picture for the Oakland Coliseum shows it being used for football, with the goalposts set up, and with extra seats along one sideline. When the stadium was used for baseball, the goalposts and extra seats were removed. The Coliseum has always had natural grass, not artificial turf. It used to be a better baseball park before that big monstrosity called Mt. Davis (after Raiders owner Al Davis) was built in center field. And the A's drew well in the 80s and 90s when they had good ownership and a winning team.

    Highly irregular field dimensions probably isn’t the best for baseball as a product, but it sure looks fun as hell. Playing in something as wacky as the Polo Grounds sounds absolutely amazing.

    One of the many problems with the Metrodome is that the sightlines were designed for football more than they were for baseball. You'd pay for a seat and have to turn your head thirty degrees to see home plate.
    Also, baseball just isn't meant to be played indoors. It isn't right - baseball is about slowing down and enjoying the summer. They COULD have gotten a retractable roof for the early weeks of the season where it can still be chilly, but they elected to save a few hundred million. (They also wouldn't have been able to fit it into the footprint of the land they had in mind - so it's a good thing they decided against it, because the location is pretty much perfect).

    On Oakland Coliseum, it was funny yet sad to look at the game reports and see the attendance (with no restrictions/guidelines) be under 5000 for a game. Not a fan of them, but for the fans of and the team itself, the A’s have to move somewhere or get something built quick.

    I've been to Tropicana Field. I agree with the narrator's depiction of mass opinion. It is one of the worst stadiums. The way that it was put together (especially the stands) doesn't give it a major league feel. I felt like I was going to a high school game.

  • @lovesgucci1
    @lovesgucci1 ปีที่แล้ว

    You guys should watch videos on athletes that played two major league sports at the same time. Bo Jackson & Deion Sanders played baseball and football. Michael Jordan retired from the NBA - until the MLB went on strike - to play baseball.
    Players just started spring training. There’s new rules this season! There’s now a pitch clock, which helps speeds the game up.
    Hope you guys are able to make the game out there!!

    • @JPMadden
      @JPMadden ปีที่แล้ว

      @counselthyself The issue was the first professional game, not the first game played by anyone. But this is also somewhat disputed. The first game played by rules similar to the modern game is generally recognized as having occurred on June 19, 1846, in Hoboken, New Jersey. The 1838 game in Ontario was played under rules sufficiently different that it is considered to have not been modern baseball--there were 5 bases, first base was only 18 feet from home plate, the batter was out if a hit ball was caught after one bounce.

    With the Raiders gone, the Oakland As now want to build a new waterfront stadium (well, San Francisco's got one and Oakland can't stand it) with surrounding towers for offices and housing costing $12 billion. But the Oakland city government seems to keep putting up obstacles and my bet is it'll never get built and the As will leave town.

    The old stadiums from the 60's. & 70's were round, also known as cookie cutter stadiums. They were a cheap way for cities to have one stadium used for both baseball, & football. They were bad football stadiums & equally as bad baseball stadiums. They tore them all down now & all multi-sport cities have a stadium specifically designed
    for that sport only. The way it always should have been.

      Oakland and Toronto still play in them. Toronto's was probably the last to be built and isn't quite as awful as the rest of them.
