  • Propain Bikes introduced the Hugene back in 2018; a bike they were motivated to make in order to offer themselves a more agile platform for their less gnarly home trails, that would still be capable for adventures into the unknown. This was the first model they had released with 29” wheels and piloted their updated Pro10 configuration, with the rear shock relocated to within the front triangle. Not only did this give aesthetic benefits, but removed the concerns from riders about shock longevity in the firing line of dirt and further centralised the centre of gravity. This new configuration was so successful that Propain then updated the remainder of their lineup to follow suit. After a few years of service, it was time for the Hugene to get a facelift to bring it closer in line with their new design language and stay on-trend with the current geometry and customer desires - enter the Hugene 2021.
    Following feedback from their team and customers, Propain opted to add 10mm of travel to the Hugene to produce a 140mm travel bike they say has phenomenal uphill performance but doesn’t hesitate to go full speed on rough terrain. But they didn’t stop there, and thanks to their Bike Configurator they offer customers the option to spec a 150mm fork to boost the descending capabilities of the bike. Add to this the on-trend geometry adjustments, and you’ve got a significantly more capable bike for the descents. However, they didn’t want to lose the all-mountain, well rounded essence of the Hugene, so looked to improve the climbing performance at the same time. The seat tube is steeper, the weight lower, and the anti-squat higher in order to add climbing prowess to a bike that was no slouch to begin with.
    As with all of our Dissected Features, this is not intended to be a long term review or endorsement of a product but is instead a chance for our viewers and readers to get a deep dive look into some of the newest tech and products in the mountain bike space. We thank Propain for the opportunity to create this feature and working with us on exclusive interviews. Our impressions of the bike are 100% our own and we will be working on a long-term review over the coming months.

    Good review and great riding spot (and riding). Honesty about its limitations is definitely appreciated too.
    I'm surprised at that price and only a 34, which as you say is a bit weedy for what this bike encourages. But did that 4650 include taxes etc.? I'm not sure whether they have started factoring that into their prices yet. I'd save on the groupset and add a 36. I built a really nice setup with the 36 and Float X2 which came in at 3473, but would be 4650 with VAT and duty if those aren't included in their current prices. Droppers aren't standard either with Propain. Canyon, Bird and even GG are looking like they might be a little bit better value, especially the Spectral CF, and Canyon include taxes/duty in their prices.
    Interesting about the sizing too. I'm 5'11 so right between sizes. At your height 6'2" it seems like your size choice was a little clearer, but wondering how you found going for the smaller of the two sizes available to your height? Crunching the numbers I'm thinking I'd go with the L.

    Hi! Any another bike around 130 50 climb 50 descend with the better dh posibilities and lighter than the propane? (I think its around 13.7kg, im looking something more next to 13 or under)
    Transition Spur will be ok in the trails of this video? I live in a rocky area and not sure of its capable like the propane, Tallboy or Revel Rascal for example.
    (Yeti 130 i think its even heavier than this)
    Thanks!

      Hugene is a slightly more capable bike but not quite as “sharp” as the Izzo. I’d take the Hugene for slightly more aggressive duties and the Izzo as a full on rocket ship. I’m 189cm and tested both in XL. Would have happily ridden the larges too for a more agile ride.

    • @andersjohnsrud2009
      @andersjohnsrud2009 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got my Hugene in july, it runs really quiet in my opinion. Just use a cable tie around the rubber grommets so they dont slide.

    • @TheLoamWolf
      @TheLoamWolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It isn't an ultra quiet bike - the frame is quite hollow and any rattling cables, chainslap outwith the intended parts on the protector and debris hitting the downtube did make some noise. Mostly things that can be improved by some attention paid with a zip tie or some foam here and there, as Anders mentioned!

    • @taranclammer4886
      @taranclammer4886 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hub is very quiet compared to other bikes I have tried, and the cables don't slap around much, but when something does cause the frame to reverberate it makes a fairly loud metallic clanging noise, which was disconcerting at first.

    I'm starting to lose my frame of reference with so many long travel bikes with massive wheelbases and slack HTA being called playful, nimble and agile. And some short (travel) and small wheeled bikes being called stable and composed.
    Can we have some objective competitive comparisons between different style bikes? For example: which bike you can bunnyhop highest on, crush a rockgarden fastest on, make it through a tight slalom section fastest on, manages to get furthest on a slight uphill rhythm section without a chain installed, which is the highest drop/huck you're willing to take per bike etc? All things you can actually measure.
    Take bikes out of different categories or, if you wanna go radical, make this a standard part of every bike review.
    I'm lost.
