  • John from www.growingyour... visits JeanMarie Chocolat Farm in Puerto Rico to show you how Cacao is grown with minimal impact on the forest ecosystem. He also shares with you how you can start your own cacao farm in Puerto Rico and make $15,000 to $20,000 a year per acre growing chocolate and saving the forest at the same time.
In this episode, John visits the agroforestry farm of JeanMarie Chocolat in the Forest, you will learn more about farming in Puerto Rico and how things have changed in Puerto Rico to create the current economic situation.
Next, John will share his thoughts on why agroforestry is the future of farming where you work with nature instead of against it. You can keep the fertility in the land by selectively removing trees to plant more desirable ones.
You will discover how on a property filled with slopes how you can grow 800-1000 cacao trees. You will discover some of the other crops that are being grown along with the cacao and see some of the old-growth trees in the forest.
You will learn how the forest creates its own fertility and how there is no need for compost piles in the forest.
Next, You will discover why JeanMarie Chocolat grows certain varieties of cacao and how they graft their trees to ensure they are growing high yielding and the best tasting cacao to maximize production and quality.
You will see the cacao tree nursery and the trees you can buy to grow your own cacao farm in Puerto Rico.
Next, you will learn more about the three types of cacao: Forastero, Criollo, and Trinitario. John will show each of the types of pods and cut each one open and try the fruit from each pod. You will learn which variety is the best to grow and why.
You will discover why the cacao fermentation process is important and how they are able to achieve a 90% fermentation rate in Puerto Rico.
Finally, John will interview Juan Echevarria, the owner and farmer at JeanMarie Chocolat and ask him the following questions:
    38:50 Start of Interview
39:22 Why did you decide to grow Cacao in Puerto Rico?
40:20 Why did you decide to use agroforestry to grow your crops?
41:20 Why do you grow using organic methods without chemicals?
42:32 What are some of the crops you grow here on the farm?
44:30 Why is it important to start farming and grow cacao today?
45:54 How much can someone make per make growing cacao a year?
47:09 How can you increase income with eco tourism?
48:53 Tell me more about the value added cacao and chocolate you sell?
50:12 Is there any important messages you would like to share today?
51:10 How can someone support you by purchasing your products?
51:49 Can someone order the special Chocolate I really liked?
52:00 How can someone contact you if they are interested in growing cacao and buying land in Puerto Rico?
53:00 Any final thoughts for my viewers today?

OMG John, Can't believe you were at the farmers market in Rincon today and we missed you!
I have to tell you, my wife and I moved to PR a week ago just to grow our own food. And you know why?
We were totally inspired by ALL YOUR videos. Moved from Brooklyn NY to PR. And in fact we spoke to Juan last week who is providing us with our first Cacao trees tomorrow at the Rincon Farmers Market. Boy would we be honored to meet you. Are you going to be there tomorrow Sunday as well? it would be the thrill of a lifetime for us to meet the man that inspired our whole change of life. We will be there beginning at 9AM. Sure would be glad to shake your hand it would be a real honor. Hope to bump into you there.

He is doing so much to help the land of Puerto Rico, the people, and everyone who loves chocolate and freedom and Puerto Rico. Love your messages John. Ive taken away so much from this channel over the years. You taught me to use rock dust and where I live (CA) everyone has seemed to have forgotten how nature works. That's a really awesome deal Puerto Rico is offering to the US... except California has no rain and those plants would die. Also, CA has a ridiculous set of rules going on since the 1950's that all agricultural imports are banned - even if it's from another continental US state. Cant even import a cherry tree from Washington. Bad things are happening to our ecosystem and I'm so grateful there are still some rational heads trying to heal this planet.

Hi, I'm trying to get to your 20,000 per year per acre for cacao. Please correct my math. A cacao tree prod 25 pods or about two and a half pounds of cacao beans per year. Cacao beans might sell for $2 a pound, so a tree produces $5 a year. Tree density is about 500 trees per acres so every acre produces $2,500 per year, not $20K. If $20k/acre is for manufactured products like chocolate, the 90% of revenues for manufacturing not growing. Wouldn't a more profitable business model would be to buy local cacao for $2 a pound and just manufacturer? I too am very interested in a sustainable cacao farm operation for Puerto Rico, but my business plan isn't working. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks great video by the way

there's nowhere near enough land that "tropical" or "luxury" crops can be grown in the united states. coffee, tea, chocolate, spices and bananas are all niches that only a few places in the united states can claim. That's why coffees grown in America, or teas grown in America, are so expensive. There's nowhere near enough to satisfy the demand.
Now my favorite tropical plants; ginger, turmeric, lemongrass and tulsi basil. My tropical medicinal quartet. I would, however love to try and get a young chocolate tree for my collection at home, young tea bush too. :D I have an avocado tree and a lemon tree in pots. :3

Wauw please visit this guy again. Im really tempted to start such a farm in the near future.
Would be really cool if u could get info from the guy like, how much do u pay for 1arcer and is it a one time fee. Cuz here in Denmark u dont own the land u buy. U still pay proberty tax ever year. Also it would be funny to know how many acers u need in order to make anough money for yourself to life off, after u paid the workers and paid other aditional expenses Associated with this kind of farming.
Also maybe go more into debt about other crops u can grow along side the cacao, like maybe mango, advocado, bananas ect.
    Thx for a fantastic video.

luffebassen if you want to check prices check on google (clasificados online P.R.) you will find many farms and wonderful homes being abandoned due to the situation here...but do not purchase anything until you find someone from here who can help you make a good deal in a nice property.

luffebassen check for yourself (clasificados online P.R) all you need is good credit or cash! Try to get someone who lives near the property who knows the island so you can get a good deal.

Cool! I never thought I'd ever have an opportunity to learn so much about cacao. Thanks!
Also John is SO RIGHT about the fact that produce in our markets including Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are imported which means they are older and less fresh.
This is true even in states where all kinds of fruit and vegetables could be grown. It is PATHETIC! On top of that, you pay and arm and a leg for it and half the time it isn't even ripe!

$20,000/yr/acre just doesn't seem like a lot of profit for how much work (though gratifying) it takes.

dprescott74 check out (clasificados online P.R) and like the mainland, you have to get someone from here to help you make a good choice, as to land and neighborhood.

I must add agroforestry is nothing new, in fact, Native Americans were the first to know how to do it millennia before and way more advanced, we have lost their way they also developed a super compost called Terra-Petra which is mined! we are mining a manmade resource of a long-gone civilization.

Dude, great show but! you never actually say what other crops you can grow in Puerto Rico. and, what about including other people in your purchase of land... and investors...And it would be cool for you to post some info on the land prices and parcels that you come across...
