You ain't lying about learning on youtube and doing the jobs no one else will do. Two years ago I started with the company I'm with now and the guy supposed to train me on AC had a stroke and never came back. I went into AC season all alone doing 5 or 6 a day and watching dozens and dozens of youtube videos and damn if I didn't learn how to do the job, got promoted and make a shit ton more money! And I'm still alone at a 216 unit complex

Hope that other guy is ok, but that's great!! You were definitely the right guy. I sometimes think it's better to not have a guy (maintenance guy) teaching you that way you learn from the real pros. That's a great story and goes exactly with what I'm trying to say in the video! Thanks for commenting!!

I respect everyones opinion here, here is my opinion, after been in this industry for 30 plus years( there was no TH-cam back then) and working for one of the biggest company's in the country I will take the time to teach someone in appreaciation of someone taking a chance on me when I started in this industry, that way you can ask him to do that task next time, I think is win win situation, I belive it takes a special group of people to work in this industry, if you want to learn you have to be coachable and open mind, be a hardworker and if you're a leader( supervisor or lead tech) lead by example don't become a dictator no one wants to work for a dictator, stay safe you all.

I appreciate the straightforward talk, I am thinking about applying for a maintenance position at a church, the only maintenance I’ve done is my own around the house, what I can’t fix I’ve had to hire out. I’m hoping I have what it takes. I know it’s up to me to learn more I’m not sure if I would be able to do this!

I don’t work maintenance, but I believe that as a leader you it’s part of your responsibility to teach the young guys under you. Not to always use the excuse of there isn’t enough time.

If we hire a guy to paint apartments he will make less than the guy that fixes appliances and a/c units. If the guy painting apartments wants to make more money it's his responsibility to learn more. I will gladly help someone learn more but I will not take them from their responsibilities to be with me when I'm doing repairs. This is not a school, it's a job. If you get hired as the janitor at a school don't expect the principal to teach you to be a teacher. If the janitor wants to become a teacher or a principal it's his responsibility to educate himself. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind teaching, I do it here on TH-cam it's just that I will help someone that is willing to put in effort to learn. I don't want to be responsible for them learning

@@MaintenanceManNarratives I get what you’re saying. One only goes as far as they want to go. But with mentors and people that show you the way you go even further. Education is important and if someone shows the will to want to learn I would teach them and not stunt their growth. From janitor to teach there is a big difference there. But when you are talking about the trades you can learn without going to school and having good mentors that’s the beauty of the industry.

Yea, I remember those times! Nobody would give out secrets of the trades either. You just had to figure it out. It is alot easier now.

Hey I know this is an older video, but im starting a maintenance job as a groundskeeper, what should I start learning how to fix outside of work, what's a good starting point??

  • @SDcrooZer

I mildly disagree. As a leader you should recognize the ones that want to learn and make time for them. They might be looking for that person that will assist them in elevating. That being said, I understand it's hard to make time. I have 5 facilities across two states with the closest one being 2 1/2 hours away from home base. While it's a hassle with travel, the amount of pay increase and my voice meaning something grew exponentially because I continued to develop people.

I agree with that, I do it on youtube I teach my experience and knowledge. My issue is I can't carry someone with me while doing work orders. If someone is really interested in learning and advancement they will definitely learn just by watching videos. And I'm always available is they have a question or problem. The thing is, I can't carry the guy painting apartments with me so he can learn because then who is going to do his job.
But when I find someone who I can see is putting in the time and effort to learn and I see they will really be an asset and help. I will always do my best to help that person out.

I bet they see that you will be able to handle it. It's a good opportunity, I'm sure that once you're there it won't be as bad as it may seem, and you know that youtube has the best teachers and instructors
