Imagine passing on a $600 Shelby GT350😮
Boomers had it so good back then. Mustangs, mopars, Chevy muscle cars with huge engine (vette, camaro, firebirds, T/a). And there were tens of thousands of them. Like basically every mustang built from the 90s to now. Is about equal to all the OG mustangs from 64.5 through 73. Like they had them beat them and scraped them. Now the few enthusiast cars that come out get canceled and become collector cars within a few years of their initial release. As much as these old guys say that car culture is dying, it’s dying because they killed it. 😊
I'd probably think about it till I died😂😂😂
I bought many muscle car for under 1K, could not keep them all I was in my late teens.
Would sell & buy another one times were GR8.
I would take a mopar over a ford any day
In the mid 80s, one of my high school classmates drove a Shelby GT350. It was originally his dad's car, and the dad gave it to him when he turned 16. This was before they shot up in value. Also, in 1989, I attended community college, and one of the students was daily driving a real 1973 Porsche Carrera RS 2.7. At the time, it was just an old Porsche. Now it's a million dollar car.
I absolutely LOVE listening to Jay talk about cars and tell stories
My dad passed on a ‘68 Hemi GTX, getting the 440 instead. My brother, and I loved that bronze beauty. We were 7, and 5 years old. Whenever we rode with dad (and mom wasn’t with us) we always enticed dad to “punch it!”. He would……He traded in the beast for a tamer ‘72 Duster 340. Summer ‘72. I bought the car from dad my senior year in high school. Hung on to it long enough to restore it in 1998. Still have it. Dad is 86 now, with dementia. His last car was a 2011 Taurus SHO. It’s on a trickle charger in his garage with less than 30K on it. I take him riding in it, and the old 340 ever so often. He still gets a kick out of going fast.
Back in the early `70s, I bought a `69 Mustang 428 Cobra Jet for $650, the previous owner thought the motor was about to self-destruct, when all it needed was a new oil pressure gauge. Best car deal I ever made....
Still have it?
I passed on a 70 with a boss 429 because the car was green.
@@cuzz63 😆
please tell me what happened to it
Still got it?
My new 1968 Hemi Road-Runner was $4264 , with $1200 the option for the Hemi , and $162 for the 4-speed ...
Dude has literally had the most beautiful vehicles of every taste restored with no expense spared for future generations to enjoy...respect
Damn, Jay is like all our favorite rock stars, all are getting up there in years and we aren't going to have them around fir a whole lot longer and the world just won't be the same!
Yeah! I'm shocked! He looks like a little old man!
@@malcolmwolfgram7414 He is a little old man, holding up very nicely. Hopefully for a long time to come!
The past couple years he's aged a lot all of a sudden. Seems a lot slower.
He's had it tough. His wife has Alzheimer's and he also survived that fire while working under car.
He's aged noticeably post-covid, but especially since the fire. Happens to us all eventually
I remember during the late 80's you could still buy a 68 Camaro, Firebird or Nova for under a grand then like Jay says it was just like 5 years went past and everything cost 10 times what it did. It's about the same time that Harley's went from grungy bikes to your doctor's or dentist's motorcycle.
At my high school in the 80's there was a 69 GTO, 67 Mustang fastback, 69 Mercury Cougar, 1970 Olds 440, 69 Camaro, a 64 Fairlane with a sweet translucent pink flame paint job and hydros, and a 1970 Bronco. All in a school with less than 400 kids in grades 9-12. The fact we had a great auto shop program surely helped, but those cars were all cheap back then.
@@dzapper7they were cheap even in 2011 when I graduated. I had multiple 70-72 chevelles, Camaros, bandit trans ams and like 50 1998-2002 SS Camaros and ws6 trans ams. I’d get them for like $2500-$5500 and resell one or two a week. Even had a 2006 corvette z06 I got for $6500 with a blown engine. Threw a $150 suburban 5.3 in it.
Yup. A family member bought a 69 Camaro RS 327, as his first car out of high school in 1986, I think he paid $1,500 for it in great condition. Also ended up buying a 1967 Corvette 427 4 speed for a few thousand in the late 80's, it needed body work... Both got sold in the early 2000's for a few thousand more, when they still weren't worth nearly as much as they are now. Probably lost $100k, not knowing what the prices would end up doing. ughh.
My brother's first big car purchase was a 1977 Trans-Am. 400 Pontiac, 7/10 condition, in 1998. I think he gave $3500 for it, then sold it for $3,500~ in 2003 after having his fun with it. It was starting to get rusty, though. It wasn't a big loss, really.
The flathead (L-head) straight 6 was standard on 60's Ramblers. The OHV was a $40 option.
That’s awesome.
If I ever get out to California, Jay I would like to see your cars collection. You made my bucket list top 3. Thanks for all the great videos.
In 85 i passed on a 70 challenger for 800 bucks because it was brown. I had a 66 GTO at the time. A year later a met a guy at a swap meet who wanted to make me an even trade, my 66 GTO for his convertible 66 GTO and i passed on that too. WHO KNEW back then!!
You would probably like my brothers yard and mine. He is into mopar, I have the Pontiacs, and a lime green 70 Cuda AAR clone.
What a great clip! Just like others have said, I always enjoy hearing Jay tell stories and talk everything automotive
Richard Carpenter's pristine unrestored '70 Barracuda 440 comes to mind when I saw Craig Jackson's car here. Jay drove that car a few years ago too. Old school Challengers/Barracudas are just awesome cars to me. I'd settle for a 340 4 speed 'Cuda, that was plenty of car for the money.
This is the first time I am thinking the years are finally catching up to Jay.
in 1965, a Corvette with a fuel injected 327 was a $500 option that made 375hp. the carbureted 396 was a $250 option and made 425hp. Chevy dropped the fuel injection option after that year.
Jay is such a legend
Damn time goes fast can't believe Jay is 74 yr old 😮
Love and miss
Jay Leno.
I remember when you came on to Replace Johnny Carson I was sitting with my dad and I thought nobody could do it but you did❤
To be this man for a day. To drive those cars. Wow!
I passed on 73 challenger, all original except some kind of low profile blower attachment, for $1500 in high school in the 90s. I regret to this day.
The 80's was the best time to snatch up rare muscle cars.
I remember looking at classic car trader magazines 20+years ago😢
Mr. Leno is looking good!
More like 700+ for the Hemi !
$800 I remember, why I had the GTX 440+6
$400 in 70 was 2.56 weeks of avg. American net pay.
Jay is looking a bit slimmer in this video!! He looks great!! Much love for him;)
Love those old Mopars 💪
We bought a roadrunner440 with a tri-power and the cool hood scoop new for $1,200 Back in 1970. My brother that had bought it passed it down to me later in the '80s and I put it in a 68 Roadrunner body after boring it out putting the three-quarter cam in and all kinds of other goodies. It was just an amazingly fun car that would hold you back in the seat where you couldn't grab a $5 bill stuck to the windshield went under power. I passed you down to my younger brother and he still has the engine parts and stuff in Alaska.
I didn't know Mopar had Tri-power ?? 6BBL. Six-Pak .
These prices are all over the place, i almost thought i was watching storage wars 😂
I bought a gt 350 in high school in 82’ for $400. My dad and I rebuilt it with maybe a $1000 for paint, upholstery, rebuilding the motor. I’ve repainted it, and replaced lots of small parts. I drive it almost everyday. A guy I work with has a Mercedes told me I should get one instead of my “old car.” I showed him what it was worth and he freaked out.
Jay Leno is the Grandpa with war stories of car guys.
Reminds me of the story my grandpa told me about his mustang he bought from his neighbor for less than $200. Needed a tune up and tires, which cost him another $30 or something stupid like that 😂😂 crazy to think how little a dollar goes now
A good running 440 six pack set up right with a torque flite would out run that eliphant
Jay Leno you are legend. I'd love to spend a day with you.
I was in middle of muscle car Era 68 -70. Let me state that I cruised nearly every night with friends in Detroit area. When I see these auctions with all these 440s,426 Hemis etc. I laugh. I NEVER encountered one Chrysler product 426 Hemi.and only ONE 440 six pack Road Runner. These big block cars essentially were extremely rare. Sure, there were 396 Chevelles,Camaros occasionally. Even Mustangs GTs,Boss,Machs, were small blocks, never a 428, 429 . Insurance and high option $ kept most out of the high horsepower. Jay understands this.....my car....I cruised,( never raced) my 69 Corvette,435 H.P. M21 4 speed, 411 gear. No one ever challenged me when they saw that 427 on hood.
Looking good Jay
Great episode. I just finished watching it. Great guest too!
When I was looking for a 67/68 fastback. There was a 68 gt350 project car forsale. 302/c4 car. They wanted 15k.
This was in 2000.
I ended up finding a 67 fastback for 2700.00 and bought that. I still own it.
Jay Leno the grandpa i need .
God I wish I could take my money from now and go back to the 70s I would be living the American dream
Ya, Jay. I understand. I passed on an MG TC for $600 in1970 because of rust and it was missing two bonnet screws.
The green Cuda with the black stripe package was the looker. Or is that just plum crazy ?
Why does everybody get crazy when a dog has a hemi. They were only have 14 second in the quarter mile car, look it up period period period
Lol they did have plum crazy purple paint
Hindsight is always 20/20
1971 bought a 2yo 69 CHEVY NOVA L78 396/375 4 spd for $2K.
You said it Jay
Almost as interesting as a Leno appearance On Match Game Hollywood Squares Hour!
In the early 80s, I couldn't scrape up the money for a GT500KR convertible for $1,800. The guy was in Louisiana and the oilfield had just died (again) and he had to move out of state for a new job and couldn't bring the car with him. That car in decent condition is now worth $180,000.
Even 60k for a classic Shelby is a great deal
$400 more for the hemi over the 440 was saying a lot back then but even back in the muscle car era those 426 hemi were rare and hard to get.
Kiss kiss old practical man.❤
Also, the Hemi was more expensive on fuel and maintenance on it was difficult - and the standard Hemi (difficult to keep in tune) wasn't that much faster than a 440.
I have a old 76 Cutlass that I need too restore
The Hemi not only cost more to buy than the 440...it cost more to keep going.
Highway patrol departments went for the 440.
It was a whole bunch more reliable.
I bought a 65 gt 350 in 74 for 300 running and driving in hi school, sold it to a class mate for 400, he didn't finish paying me and I walked to his house and took it back.
GET WELL JAY,WE LOVE YOU,ESP THE CHILDREN
😮😮hey jay lost a little weight
I noticed that too
He burned it off.....sorry.
Take the Hemi! Glenn
I've seen a 327 out run a 426 himi
I sold my 68 Z/28 in 2007 for 15 grand
My parent’s neighbor who was a little old lady sold me her dead sons 64 GTO convertible for $1,200 in 1993. It was totaled a year later while parked outside the house by an old man who got the sun in his eyes and plowed his Ford dully into the car I guess I wasn’t supposed to have . His insurance covered it but like my dad said, I won’t be able to find ANYTHING like what I had . I learned a lesson though. Forgiveness wipes away bitterness
That $400 is more like $15,000 today
Jay has lost a fair bit of weight. He looks good. Guy is incredibly knowledgeable about cars.
Two things Jay has that are worth millions of dollars are his cars, and his denim jeans and shirts.
I'm praying for ya Jay sorry to hear about Mayvis such a sweet lady God Bless ya brother I'm burrying my brother tomorrow and 3 of my close friends this next month we all gotta go but I'm going LAST WITH ALL MY CARS 67 Z28 ,57 CHEVY SEDAN DELIVERY ,70 DEVILE CONVERT,97 VETTE
“Did you look at it?”
Wow he looks 1000 years old
Dann he passed on a gt350 thats crazy!
Yup, I heard him 😂.. My name is Dann. With two n. I know you meant dang but still funny to me.
@@ZLwh1ne 😂 😂 😂 never been happier with my spelling mistake, glad you thought it was funny🙃
That comment stopped me in my scrolling tracks 😂. Cheers 🍻
In 1973 I had a navy lieutenant offer me his 289 Shelby cobra to me for 1,500 dollars as he had new orders and couldn’t take his cobra with him. Didn’t have the money and passed on it.
New hemi cuda sat on showroom floor well into. 1971. Because insurance and gas milage
The Hemi engine was originally a Ford design too. Ironically the ONE thing any company has stolen from Ford, and not the other way around.
The Crimson Chin.
Did Mr Leno slimed down a bit? He looks healthy ❤
My brother and I looked at 68 fastback gt. This was in the mid 90s. Asking was at a fair price. I think now it is worth close to 90k. I have to ask what was under the hood. 390,427 side oiler. I'm not sure.
Dang. Did he age 20 years in the last 2 years?
I remember Ferrari Daytonas selling in the back of Road and Track in the late 70’s for $20,000 plus. I said to myself that’s highway robbery. Now they are worth millions. Unbelievable
JAY has really slimmed down! He's not ill is he?
.
Moral of the story, buy up old benz’s while you still can 😂
The dealers wouldn't crank a Hemi for a customer. Too many things could go wrong and the dealer would be held liable. Spun bearings were not uncommon in a few hundred miles. It was still a Mon-Friday workweek for all the manufacturers. Mon and Friday were the worst days.....
BACK IN THOSE DAYS. The Hemi was considered too much and had to be special ordered. The Hemi was a Street Type and not the race type, ( they were sent to the race teams. The 440 cu. In. Was a better buy, and you could buy it NOW. Insurance was outrageous.
Jay we are still waiting for the best car ever....Le Car😅
I remember a Story about one of Mr.Leno'$
Henchmen trying to Cheat an Elderly Woman
Out of Her Vintage Car....
Lots of boomers telling on themselves buying actual cars for $1k while a 98 geo metro is $2k today 😂
hearing this makes me wanna cry dude
Wow
Jay is a legend. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him.
Damn he looks better now that he's lost weight!
4k option 😂 idk what that would actually equate to today but it'd be far more than 4k
You alright Jay?
imagine buying a gt350 for 60K. oh the days
Holy! Jay looking old AF!
It’s like that today, still
And you have to spend lots more on race parts to make the Hemi worth it over the 440.
For a second I thought he said stripper!!
J looks a thousand years old
Nobody even knows who you are.
Jay should give his collection away in some kind of car race or build off before he gets to old...
We've all got these car regret stories..........
I think every car guy has a story of a car they could have bought and now they kick them selves for not buying then!
In the 90’s could have bought a perfect rust free 69’ Dodge Charger rt for $6,500.😂
Remember the commercial. A hipster beatnik could not say BARRACUDA. SO HE JUST SAID. BA BA RA RA CU CU DA DA
Is that a plum crazy hemi Cudal convertible?
1 of 13 I think
First one made and paid 1.2 million for it
