I'm 56 and I remember the We are the World video that had such a huge impact on me and others. I also think of LiveAid and the difference they made. Before that when I was even younger I remember Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World. I even showed my granddaughters Louis Armstrong's video just a few days ago and being a former teacher I wanted them to learn something from it. I played the video and then told them that the video was made in the year I was born in 1968. I said he is singing this song from his heart at one of the most tumultuous times in American history. I said MLK jr was killed in the same month as my birth. My grandparents escaped Alabama and vowed to never raise their kids in such a racist environment. I said obviously what he saw all around him was not all peace and love but he could still rise above and produce music that will forever affect a person. Everything like that had a huge impact on me. Music can absolutely make a difference.

Why has MSNBC started to append these nerve jarring "commercials" at the end of each video? First it was poor Ali Velshi, shouting at us, the viewers, almost hysterically, to download the "new app", like a carnival barker in 1950. Finally, mercifully, that ended. Now again, we are listening to news reports which are important, sometimes upsetting or though provoking, or even tragic, then boom, the guy who sounds like he is shouting at his from a tiled room, and no teeniest tiniest pause between the video we choose to watch, and the "commercial". MSNBC leadership or deciders, do you really hate your viewers that much?

Let's not forget Daniel Barenboim's West-Eastern Divan Orchestra or Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, both of which were founded to bring together musicians and artists from diverse countries and cultures and to share that music with the world at large. Music (and food and art) are wonderful non-political, non-threatening ways to learn about other people and experience their culture.

I was a US Soldier stationed in Europe. The theaters there had banners with American movies on them. But do you know what made the most difference in my opinion? Giving me time off so I could mingle with the civilians of that nation. Meet people in a cafe randomly and break bread with them. Talk with the shop keeper and the customers. Take a seat on a park bench next to some old person. Great someone on the sidewalk, kneel down and pet their dog. That builds bonds and respect for America. Giving them music is shallow, like passing out fast food burgers for free.
True story: I once stopped by an Imbiss (a small food stand or street food shop) and I had bonded with the people that worked there. The owner said to me, "I prepared duck for my family tonight. It is not on the menu of course. Will you sample it and tell me what you think?" To this day that was the best duck I have ever had. I asked if I could change my order and he laughed. But he gave me a free can of beer with my order.
Personal contact changes hearts and minds. Music is just that and not personal. That guy that gave me the duck sample went home and if one of his kids complained about the food he would have said, "The American loved it."
