Was this toy slot car faster than the real thing? | Formula Tyco

- In the 80's and 90's TYCO claimed their Formula Tyco slot cars were faster than the real thing, with scale speeds of up to 1200 Miles Per Hour! I build an Arduino based speed trap to put the claim to the test.
Great to see coverage of a system I didn't have, and bravo with the application of the Arduino speed trap, very nicely done with integrated display. Also didn't realise how fast this actually was. Great video and some really good engineering there. Thank you.
Thanks for appreciating the effort! i thought the arduino / slot car mash up would be popular but this video tanked!
That was excellent, really interesting to see what these old sets were capable of and when it was brand spankers it wouldn’t be far of the mark . Greetings Portsmouth England 🏴
Thanks for watching, glad you liked it, yes great little cars too shame not still around
Interesting video , really enjoyed it .Keep up the good work :)
Glad you enjoyed it! thanks for watching
Great experiment! Very interesting, well done Sir! you earned a sub!
Race On!
Fascinating experiment! I had always just taken their word for it, I'm pleased to know we weren't all duped, Lol! Thank you for keeping it all in miles per hour, it saved this American from having to check my conversion charts before having my morning coffee!
Glad you enjoyed it! thanks for watching
Old things would not scam people 😆
Ruddy hell! I forgot just how fast Tyco cars flew around the track. This was something I never purchased because at the time I was a Scalextric fan.. I wish I had now though as that track looked pretty bloody good!
Thanks for watching, the cars are pretty detailed too for such a small scale
I really wanted a TCR set as a kid. I did have scalextric.
A lot of these "mini" slot cars, to me, seem to move too fast and hold on implausibly in curves. I preferred scalextric precisely because it was slower and much easier to see what was going on and react to it.
thanks for watching
i had a smaller set from tyco featuring the williams and a benneton car, circuit was a bit smaller, but i got tired of it really fast because of the same reasons you re giving. Racing with 2 just didnt make any sense, you had no control, there was no real "racing", it was just a race to pick your car up and put it back on the track fastest.
@@martijnstroobants824 yes. "Faster than the real thing" is quite a marketing claim - but it doesn't make for a fun toy when the cars are just an uncontrollable blur. The Skill in scalextric was in slowing down enough to safely negotiate a bend before hammering the car out of it late enough not to spin in. You could genuinely "race" with a bit of practice and good timing.
It does seem to be a case of on or off racing.
@@slot-car-dad yes - this used to drive me up the pole. Your opponent could steal a few laps whilst you ran over to your car and dropped it back on the circuit. So a single off would make the race a foregone conclusion. That said. It's the same in real motorsport. If you crash, you lose. I don't think it occurred to 9 year old me to take it steadier and pass my friend's car whilst it was upside down on the shagpile*
*A type of carpet popular in the 80's. Honestly, people.
Im starting to collect tyco now.
I have alot of marklin sprint. Scalectrix. TCR. Great models. And alot of obscure Other slot cars.
I always skipped over tyco. Because of the small size.
In the words of murray walker..fantastic!
Thanks for watching
I got the same set in a really bad condition, but there's hope it works if I find the time to fix it. However, the box has no instructions at all. I was wondering if yours has a manual on how to build the full track? Could you share it please?
It needs to warm up a bit! Remember?! 😆
and the other problem.. it warms up too much and then gets slower! thanks for watching
Cool 😎
Thanks for watching 👀 🙂
where was the sonic boom!
:) thanks for watching
scale speed does not mean it goes as fast as a real car............DUH.............
i think we all get that, the point of the video was to test tycos claim they were "faster than the real thing" at scale speeds - Thanks for watching
