  • What's a lathe and milling machine got to do with Jet Boat building? More than you might think! Custom parts, modifications, part tweaking, repair, custom spacers, washers, shafts, and pretty much anything you might run into, having a unit like this is pretty handy. It does however have its drawbacks, which I address in the video, but.hopefully this helps you decide if this is the lathe mill for you, or it helps show you why you might be better off with something else, or if you're like me and bought it already this video will show you how to make it better!!!
    As always feel free to comment, subscribe and share this video with anyone that might benefit!

    Great video; I was on the fence about buying the milling machine attached or having it separate; now I'm sure I want them to be different machines.

      Heck yes! I'm so glad it helped! I said it several times in the video that if inwas going to do it over again, I'd buy separate machines. Mine works really well not 😁 thanks for your comment!

    Here's a tip from an old timer. Don't leave a sharp tool in the mill collet/chuck. Same thing goes for the tailstock. Keeping a sharp tool loaded in the chuck is an accident waiting to happen. Just when you are moving your hands around doing a setup, next thing you know your hand crashes into that sharp edge or drill bit and you have a nasty injury. All that time you thought you were saving by not taking that end mill out, you can spend possibly going to an emergency room, you'll definitely be changing bandages and cussing yourself out for being stupid.

    Considering all the work needed, and the large extra expense, it would have been better to have bought the lathe without the mill attachment, and then bought a separate mill of approximately the same size, which would have been a much better solution. Sure, this “works” but it’s not the best way to have gone, and likely more expensive overall.

      Yes Mel I agree. If you watched to the end I did say that my advice for someone who hadn't yet purchased this machine was to buy two standalone machines. In my case I had already bought it, so I was stuck making the modifications needed to increase usability. If you watch part two you'll see the finished product, which I'm very happy with!

      Well from what I’ve seen this cost about as much as a lathe with just a few more options and length ive seen them sell used for between $1000, to $1500 for a machine thats 1 to 2 years old. About 6 mo ago one sold on Craig-List. From a job shop that had only used it for a single contract that they had, from what was said it ran 5000 parts off, then they were trying to decide what else to do with , bit the space it took ip compared tp $$ it would make in fiture, since it was a demo from grizzly they bought at a 30% discount,
      but the boss decided to get a 4 Axis CNC with the profit from that job instead because it could make money all day everyday, so the combo served its purpose and got the financial bump they needed and operating capitol for the time to cover time until the cnc started supporting itself. And it gave someone elsr a chance to get a lightly used lathe / mill with some stater tools cheap!
      then sold the machine after the job was completed for i think it was $1100. Or $1200.

  • @plang42

    The whole point of having the milling machine joined to the lathe. Is that you can mill flats/keyways, etc, on metal stock still in the lathe chuck.
    Separating completely destroys the purpose of the combo!
    Sell what you have and buy a larger lathe and larger mill.

    • @jetboatmayhem7271
      @jetboatmayhem7271  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @plang42 I'm not sure mine would do that.... the milling head doesn't move...so if your work piece was in the lathe chuck it would have to be a certain length to reach, and the only option you'd have is to go straight down with the mill. So in order to use the mill you'd have to disconnect your work and remove the cross slide and mount a Vice and then mount your work to use the mill.
      Maybe there is something I'm missing, if so please explain.

    Can you flip mill around 180 and put mill vise behind lathe??

    • @jetboatmayhem7271
      @jetboatmayhem7271  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a killer idea! In a different shop that would totally work but I'd have to pull it away from the wall to do that. You'd also have to remove the chip guard from the lathe. But the base of the mill is a rectangle and you could easily just flip it.

  • @paul5683
    @paul5683 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Those combination mill / turning machines look like you would bang your head into the mill head mounted over the lathe. This style doesn't look as awkward as the grizzly machines with the mill head attached to the headstock. That looks like you need to wear a hard hat to keep from hurting yourself.

    Hi, please give me some advice. I'm going to buy the new drill press but also interested in this multi lathe, is the multi lathe can replace the drill press? My general works were mostly drilling on thr wood and metal things.
    Thxxxxxx

    • @jetboatmayhem7271
      @jetboatmayhem7271  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there! I'd buy them separately. The biggest problem with this machine is you have to disassemble it to mount a Vice to hold anything for Mill work. Now that they're Separate, yes the mill replaces a drill press.
      If you aren't doing milling, I would just buy a more exercise lathe and a nice drill press. You'd be money ahead and have a much better experience.

    I think you'd be better off bolting the plate to the table. Otherwise, the plate might not remain flat after welding. I think, generally, you're going to need more structure supporting the mill...

    • @jetboatmayhem7271
      @jetboatmayhem7271  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, I bolted it first, then welded it and it's solid now 👌 but yes I added some more support and now I've got something great to work with. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    • @jetboatmayhem7271
      @jetboatmayhem7271  หลายเดือนก่อน

      No they're all steel gears with a motor that drives them through a belt.

  • @arkydmax9952

    Arent they really more geared towards milling keyways between centers , and to use it as a rotary mill?

    • @jetboatmayhem7271
      @jetboatmayhem7271  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey ArkyDmax thanks for your comment! This specific machine has a selector switch that engages either the mill or lathe at one time so in my opinion that makes it less useful. The lathe and mill both share controls as well. I didn't realize that when I bought it, but expected to be able to use it like you're saying but was disappointed. So that's what led me to the modification 😁

    • @jetboatmayhem7271
      @jetboatmayhem7271  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @bruceang82 I dont think that's the case. For what I do, this setup works very well. And It didn't cost that much to do and I learned a lot. I can now machine some pretty heavy stuff because of the rigidity and I save time having the milling setup ready to go at anytime 😊 I think if anything now I've got a very polished turd.... not two turds 🤣😁
