Great heavens, where in the universe did this singing miracle come from? as a person who is a French hybrid, I can confirm her French accent in this aria is perfect, perfect... the power in this voice! great God! and her diction, and her delivery... it just goes on and on.
A historically great voice. Our great loss that what was obviously a potential to be the great star singer of the 70s didnt really pan out as expected. Verrett addresses some reasons why in the book. But i wish we had the recorded Carmen, Amneris, Azucena etc we all surely miss.
I wish sopranos would leave Carmen alone . Like Rosina, both roles were written for a lower voice( in fact both were sung by contraltos in their premiers). Having listened to these mezzos as Carmen( Grace Bumbry, Shirley Verrett, Marilyn Horne, Regina Resnik and the best one of all,Rise Stevens), the music just works better for them.

@@foropera Je vois pas ce que la langue a à voir avec la bande passante Les notes sont les notes,on suit la partition,c'est tout Mais c'est le lot de tous les chanteurs d'opera,on ne comprends rien Il y a meme des salles ou on affiche les textes des chansons sur un paneau lumineux au dessus de la scene Il y a les stars qui articule Manisfestement,ici les mots sont manifestement dits de facon phonetique en plus
Le Français est une langue à part. Dans l'opéra c'est la recherche d'harmoniques qui fait la voix. Ce n'est pas de la chanson. Si vous détestez le genre à quoi bon en écouter? Vous êtes aussi difficile avec l'anglais et le Russe? Ça m'étonnerait. Les voix françaises d'opéra qu'on comprend sont rarement des voix "riches". Verrett a toujours "articulé", et a appris les langues étrangère à la Juillard School. Évidemment elle ne va pas maitriser le français comme une Crespin.

I think I was still in my teens, or maybe at the most, in my early twenties when I heard her sing Amelia in "Un Ballo in Maschera" live. What a marvelous voice, and what stage presence.

The lovely Shirley Verrett, one of the most unique and magnificent performers in opera history. She sounds and looks fantastic here, to no surprise.

The conductor was trying to k1ll her with that slow tempo, but she still managed to shine. Brava!
