If you watch the jump scare you can see genuine shock on the faces of Theo & Shirley. Apparently there were several more lines of dialogue in their argument before Victoria (Nell) was supposed to pop out from behind them, but the director told Victoria to jump out early, so she really did scare the shit out of them.
Truly the greatest jump scare I’ve ever witnessed, hands down. Not only is it set up perfectly through all the quiet, intense, heartfelt (and not scary) conversations between Steve & Hugh, thus establishing a feeling of safety in the viewer, but more importantly it has a vital, important reason to happen in the first place. Just like when Nell tipped her coffin over when Steve was fighting with Hugh, she doesn’t want her family to fight.
And yeah, Theo’s monologue after the jump scare is just phenomenal acting. I think I heard somewhere that she nailed that in one take. 😮
    Can’t wait for 9 & 10!

I'm dying. 😂 I legit was waiting for that jumpscare. It's been a tough week and that made me laugh so hard! Thanks for unknowingly sacrificing a few years off your life for my amusement.
Katy Siegal is amazing at monologues. The actors that Flanagan works with are always spot on.

I especially enjoy the audacity of the the show giving us the biggest fucking jump scare and then *immediately* following it with this heartbreaking and beautifully emotional monologue from Theo. Just such an unexpected one-two punch!

The writing and acting in this show is excellent. Kate Siegal's performance after the massive jump scare is just beautiful and heartbreaking. So many other monologues in the show are just incredible as well.

there is even a compilation here on TH-cam with YOuTubers reacting to this jump scare. its so good! they def need to add you there :D and theos monolog and the acting after that. simply amazing. the way everything comes together with the clock worker, the treehouse or like when grown up shirl and theo experience the banging on the walls just the way they did as kids. and nell stopping fights again and again. i love this show so much. great reaction again! can't wait to see the last two ♥

When I first heard that Mike Flanagan casts his wife in all of his work, I thought to myself, "Ah, Hollywood nepotism at its finest, wonderful." But... you can't really argue with the results. Kate really is a phenomenal actress who would deserve the roles no matter her relation to the director. Her monologue in this episode is my favorite of the entire series, and this is a series with a LOT of excellent monologues.

Yes, we love seeing people's reactions to The jump scare, and yours definitely didn't disappoint. The thing I love about that scare is that it was anything but pointless: it drove the story forward in a meaningful and necessary way.
Have you ever tried subbing vegetable noodles for pasta? Zucchini and sweet potatoes work especially well for Italian dishes. Bonus points for eating your veggies and lessening your carb consumption. I purchased a spiralizer 10 years ago, and I've never regretted it.

Steve’s reveal that he “fixed it” by “fixing” himself is so heartbreaking. Lee doesn’t have a lot of screen time so it’s easy to side eye her for kicking him out until you realize what he did to her.
Replaying the fertility clinic you realize he not only kept his vasectomy secret but then married a woman who communicated she wanted children and then let her think there was something wrong with her reproductive system to the point they went for help. Seeing him as a scared little boy in that office with his mom’s guilt ghost peering in is so creepy.
The last thing he says to Lee is “we need to talk”. He’s so cornered he knows the doctor is about to figure him out and so at the last inch of the last mile of the last rope he confesses.
We don’t even need to see the scene - of COURSE it was over.

BWAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! 4 out of 5 for the jump out of the chair!!!! You lost a point for form… keep practicing!!
Going back, though… when Shirley and Theo heard the knocking around the house, it wasn’t about candy. It was a call back to when they first moved into the house. Young Shirley (Lulu Wilson) was hearing knocking on the walls and then Theo came in and said, “WHAT!? What do you want?” And then the knocking happened again while they were both in the room.
And I don’t believe Steve has had that sit down talk with Leigh yet. You may be JUMPING to conclusions there.
I’m going back to watch Nell have a come to Jesus scream at you!! 🤣🤣🤣

The jump scare in the car: was it really Nell or was it the mother?

I believe it’s Nell. Not just looks, but she has been consistently interfering when the family is arguing to stop them.

It was Nell - you can see the face in a freeze frame.
Also they were talking about Nell (Theo touching her) and then the first thing Theo said when the car stopped was “that was her!”

What a jump scare! It gave me a f***ing heart attac, first time I saw the show. Theo's monologue after that was brilliant acting.
Can't wait for you to find out the truth behind the not-existing tree house and what happened that last night in the house. It was not what I expected.
And yeah, Steve should have told his wife. I can imagine it's not an easy thing to confess to your partner, and I sympathize with him, but having secrets like this never pays off. It will only hurt people in the long run.

I'm not a big fan of jump scares. In fact, I generally consider jump scare to be to horror as fart-jokes are to comedy, but man, when they're well timed and well done... my God that one worked for me! I remember when I first watched this, I was lying in bed with my wife watching the show and when Nell popped out for her "peek-a-boo" (Emphasis on "Boo!") as I recall, gravity stopped working as I was suddenly about 6 inches off the bed, followed by landing on the floor just beside said bed, and I remember exactly what I had to say at that moment: "They really need to discuss their... OHMYHOLYJESUSFUCKSHIT!"
I'm pretty sure my wife only screamed because of my reaction, lol.

I get that a lot of people dislike Steve, he's an asshole a lot of the time, but I do feel bad for him in some ways. I agree him keeping his vasectomy a secret from his wife was a terrible thing to do, but I think the reason he did it in the first place is really depressing.
I remember the first time I was watching this with a friend, and we saw the scene in the car with Steve and Hugh, and after Steve confesses to what he did, and his father says "I'm sorry, I'm just so sorry" my friend was like "why would HE be sorry?" I thought about it for a while and decided that Hugh blames himself for Steve's actions and how he turned out. Because Steven never really experienced any of the supernatural elements in the house, and because Hugh didn't explain any of what happened to him even after his mothers death, Steven had no other recourse than to accept fully the only explanation he could grasp, that of a mental illness. So throughout his lifetime every awful thing that happened around his family only further convinced him of that, and made him feel like he had to make sure he wouldn't pass down that terrible legacy.

Keeping that secret from his wife is really the only thing Steve did that I judge him badly for. Everything else he's done is stuff that he probably could have handled better but his behaviors and reactions are completely understandable. He gets after Nell for interrupting his book signing: he's right, Nell is clearly doing a cry for help and we can feel for her but interfering with someone's career and work over personal grievances is a very selfish and petty thing to do. He's mean to Luke several times: totally understandable, Luke is an addict who has spent 10 years fucking over Steve and rest of the family again and again. He' short with his father: he blames Hugh for his mother's death, which is Hugh's fault since he never told Steve the truth. He published the book against Shirley's wishes: he has a wife and a life of his own to think about, it's understandable that he'd reach for anything that could be a leg up in his career.
Even with the Leigh thing, getting the vasectomy makes sense from Steve's point of view. Looking at it from the perspective of not believing in ghosts, which IS Steve's perspective, his family looks an awful lot like a group of people plagued by mental illness issues. We the viewer know that's not the case, but Steve doesn't, and his belief is completely rational from a skeptical POV. The one real mistake he made that can't really be excused, only forgiven if she wishes to, is lying to Leigh about it. He should have been honest from the beginning and then they could have talked about adoption or sperm donor options. Lying to her and stringing her along was a real asshole move and it's the one thing Steve really does deserve a lot of criticism for. Everything else is just Steve not being perfect and not handling things in a perfect way as a result of that fact.
