When Dio was in his prime - most of his career - he didn't get the recognition that he deserved from American media for his musical genius. Ronnie was one of the best vocalists in music, not just metal. You have to check out his early stuff with Elf, Rainbow and Black Sabbath. He was also helped to form Hear N Aid, A Metal version of Live Aid. The song they did for it, Stars, features all the best of 80's metal, it's really a treat.

Ronnie James Dio was in the band Rainbow, and as someone mentioned below you should definitely check out "Stargazer" to really be wow'd by his vocals. He went on to take over for Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath (I recommend "Heaven and Hell" and "Neon Knights" as standouts from his Sabbath catalog). Here, you are seeing his later years as a solo artist. I always loved this song, but pretty much any song from the album "Holy Diver" is great, especially the title track and the radio hit "Rainbow in the Dark". It's funny you said Ozzy, Ronnie took over for Ozzy for Black Sabbath. Check out the Black Sabbath songs "Heaven & Hell", "Sign of the Southern Cross", "Lonely is the Word", "I" and so many more. I highly recommend his previous band called Rainbow -"Stargazer" is a classic. "Catch the Rainbow", Gates of Babylon", "Temple of the King' and many more. Great voice since 1957. Check out more.
Dio was and always will be the sound of heavy metal IMHO. His early days with Richie Blackmore in Rainbow are classic. The Rainbow Rising album was a game changer in the sound of hard rock/metal. Definitely check out Stargazer and Do You Close Your Eyes from this album and Gates of Babylon from Long Live Rock and Roll. Also check out Heaven and Hell, Children of the Sea with Black Sabbath.
Well that's from Dio's classic first album which came out in 1983.... The band with Doug Aldrich in the guitar indeed kills it ... I saw Dio in 84 and met the main man himself at a signing after the gig at the Manchester Apollo... If you want to go back to the seventies and see him perform with Rainbow you will be astounded . I think that gig was probably only a couple of years before he passed away. Trixie is awesome by the way. She knows good music when she hears it!
Unfortunately, you could hear it towards the end. My favourite Dio song, Bible Black - you can hear the drop in quality. I just wish this song had been available when he was younger. Saying that, whenever I hear Ronnie James, I say to my Husband NEVER talk when he sings!
Apart from the singer and drummer, this was a different lineup than the one that recorded the original version of this song in 1983, but the people you see in this clip are all worthy of recognition. So, here we go: RONNIE JAMES DIO (vocals) got his amazing set of pipes from playing trumpet as a child. He started releasing rock singles as a teenager in the late 50s, originally as a bass player and/or singer. In the early 70s he had his first break with hard rock band Elf, that in 1975 merged into Rainbow - a subset of the Deep Purple family tree. Rainbow gave Ronnie a reputation, but it was after he replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath in 1979 that he truly became a star. His time in Black Sabbath remains one of the most cherished eras in the band's history. It did, however, end acrimoniously, after which Ronnie formed his own band, Dio, debuting in 1983 with the album "Holy diver" from which this song is picked. "Holy diver" was an instant super classic, and Ronnie remained, through good and bad times, one of the most beloved and admired heavy metal musicians for the rest of his career and life. There's LOTS more to be told, but this will do for now. He succumbed to stomach cancer in 2010. VINNY APPICE (drums) followed Ronnie from Black Sabbath to Dio in 1982 and stayed on for, not all, but most incarnations of the Dio band. He also followed Ronnie for two reunions of that Black Sabbath lineup - the latter of which, a massive success, under the monicker Heaven And Hell, since the Ozzy version of Black Sabbath remained active at the time. Vinny is the younger brother of another heavy metal drumming legend, Carmine Appice. SCOTT WARREN (keyboards) was another trusted ally of Ronnie's from the early 90s and onwards. He has a background in the hair metal scene and his earlier employers include Warrant, of "Cherry pie" fame. DOUG ALDRICH (guitar) was a guitar contender for a loooong time - he was, for instance, considered as a replacement for Ace Frehley in Kiss in 1982, but missed out because of his youth - until he finally got his recognition in this lineup of Dio in the early 00s. He was however fired, for accepting an offer to tour with Whitesnake at a time when Dio needed his services. He remained in Whitesnake for a very long time, and that is where he got truly famous. He and Ronnie did, thankfully, reconcile before Ronnie's death. Doug left Whitesnake in 2015 to focus on his own band Burning Rain, and has since also joined modern day supergroups Dead Daisies and Revolution Saints. RUDY SARZO (bass) is nothing short of a living legend. One of the most prolific bass players in heavy metal history, but in his early days he was not taken seriously by large parts of the audience because he was just too damn good looking. Bizarre, but true. In his old age, this is no longer a problem - even if he's still in great shape - and his resumé speaks for itself. Ozzy Osbourne, Quiet Riot, Whitesnake, Yngwie Malmsteen and Blue Öyster Cult - to name but a few.
Well this is one hell of a starting point.....this came out when I was 15 and it blew my mind back then. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was my initiation to metal. Just keep in mind that the lyrics that he and many others wrote had a true meaning that was not just in anger but a message to not be fooled by the advertisement of wealth and fame that was easy to get if you sign on the dotted line. Keep going !!
Doug Aldrich had a great long stint in Whitesnake.... check out some of their live stuff with him and Reb Beach (Winger) on guitar... insane!! They worked great together!
I have seen Dio many times over the years and he has always had great guitar players. However when I saw the "Evil or Devine" tour with Aldrich I was blown away.
Start from the beginning, Man on the Silver Mountain, then Stargazer, Gates of Babylon, & Kill the King, & his first rock ballad Catch the Rainbow. On to Ronnie with Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, Children of the Sea, The Mob Rules, and the great but always missed Neon Knights. Then to Dio, Holy Diver, & Rainbow in the Dark are a must listen. There is not a Dio featured song that is bad, these are my fav’s
2 of my best friends in high school lost their spot on the football team, for blowing off a game to go a Dio concert with us. Maybe a bad choice, but we’ll never forget that concert lol
That guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Standard "Gold Top". The Gibson Les Paul was designed by.. you guessed it... a guy named Les Paul. He also designed the Gibson SG (watch ANY ACDC video, Angus played the SG exclusively during his career). But Les Paul didnt like the SG and told Gibson to not put his name anywhere on it. So it was named SG for Solid Guitar. Les' wife, Mary Ford who also played guitar, loved the SG. She had a white SG with gold hardware. Les Paul and Mary Ford were a musical act back then and performed together on stage. Just to irritate Les, Mary had a little plastic piece made to fit right where the fretboard ends and the top of the body begins. Its a very highly visible spot. The piece had a trapezoidal shape and had 'Les Paul Custom' engraved into it. Les was not thrilled about it. Les Paul also saved Epiphone Guitars. Epiphone is owned by Gibson but made over seas. Back in the day Epiphone was about to go under. Les knew people at Epiphone and wanted to help them stay afloat. Les went to Gibson and suggested they buy them and make them a licensee of Gibson products. So today, you can buy a Gibson Les Paul, made in USA, and very expensive, or you can buy an Epiphone Les Paul, made in China (or Korea if you can find a good old one), and are more affordable. Both look great, the difference is the quality of the craftsmanship and build. Gibson's are pricey but are well worth it.
Hey Girl you are new to me, but anyone who loves DIO you are in my heart instantly:-), he was and will always be a GOD, and yeah the Guitar is awesome in this Doug Aldridge played the shit out of that gibson:-P..., but the voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
While the song was originally released in 1983, this performance was from 2004 or so. Ronnie was about 62 when he did this, and his voice wasn't as strong as it had been a decade or two earlier. Think about that for a minute - as great as Ronnie is here, this is him on the decline!
Dough Aldrigde is one of the best players at the moment, what I like is, that he doesn`t got the modern way with sweeping and tapping, is an old school very fast and exact player, who knows exactly what to do. And DIO will be the best singer ever!
A relisten and new comment Dio and Ozzy had a lot in common. Dio replaced Ozy in Black Sabbath and they both left Sabbath for a solo career. In song styles, they have much in common in voice very little. Completely different singing styles.
Been a metal fan since 1980 been to loads of shows. Here is the deal my top tier of live concerts I have seen are Iron Maiden and Dio PLUS Jinjer and Babymetal. There are great new bands out there as well. Of course I still love the bands and songs I grew up on but don’t sleep on newer bands. For some reason Japan has really stepped forward and has loads of great metal bands right now.
I grew up with this music, and me and my friends had so much fun with this music and beer...and some hash just for the fuck of it. i would have loved to meet u when i was ure age, first i love redheads and second i love metal chicks.
Rewatching some of your uploads.
Think Dio is in his 60's here.
his first band Ronnie and The Red Caps was a doo-wop band so the man had range as well one of the grates R.I.P
he already had cancer by this time
While the song was originally released in 1983, this performance was from 2004 or so.
DOH!!!
You got it my friend the first and second wave of British metal is where it's at the late 70s early 80s after that American thrash took the crown.
R.I.P....R.J.D...
A relisten and new comment
Dio and Ozzy had a lot in common. Dio replaced Ozy in Black Sabbath and they both left Sabbath for a solo career.
In song styles, they have much in common in voice very little. Completely different singing styles.
Dio is the best singer al time, blues, jazze, broadvei ,opera.he hawe evrithing.👍
This is Old Dio... gotta make sure you year 70s or 80s Dio.
I would check out the live show from 86 at the Spectrum on this song, it's so good too!
He is the best singer of all times
I do love new metal, my son introduced me to some stuff i missed out in the 90´s till 2005. Now i have all the stuff from 70-90 i grew up with and also this new shit that i also like. The metal world opened up for me.
oh my/...you never stop in the middle of the guitar solo...lol....
Funny that you said this gave you Ozzy vibes. Ronnie in fact replaced Ozzy in Black Sabbath.
Ronnie James Dio and Ozzy Osbourne were the ones who plowed the road of metal, yet both entitled to thier own leagues.
You should react to Stargazer, by Rainbow. You'll know how sounded a young Dio.
You’re right there . Old metal is the 🐕 dogs balls❤🎉🎉🎉
Nice live but when ritchie played guitar it synched alot better with singer. Both good tho
You probably heard holy diver ? .man of the silver mountain? Lasts in line.
DIO - Lord of the Last Day
His name is Doug Aldrich
welcome to music as it was meant to be.
IMO Doug Aldrich was the best Dio´s guitarrist ever. With all respect for Vivian Campbell
Doug Aldrich on guitar
It's funny for you to mention ozzy Osborne because Ronnie james dio actually replaced ozzy in black sabbath.
ozzy and Dio were two totally diferent singer styles. Both great but totally different
DIO !!!!!!
RJD's voice is meant for heavy metal music, there's none to match or come near his vocal power.
The guitar is a Gibson Les Paul
When I see Doug Aldrich play I just want to throw my guitar in a dumpster.
SEE what we HAD to listen to in the 70s and 80s?
This video kinda new you should check 80’s. Dio is timeless legend.
Nice reaction
By the way , the best reaction to Bohemian Rhapsody ... yours ... by far ...
You should see the music video version.
You got some space-time continuum anomaly in your room there, off to your right. Be careful!
hi great reaction from almost sleep, , dio is the best....., my suggestion,,, its.....therion ayahuasca fron the last album.....enjoy a trip... a real true
trip cheeres from chile
Rip Ronnie James you were irreplaceable
Also want to add, I grew up listening to Ozzy and Dio and love them both, but there is no comparison at all between Ozzy & Ronny. Ronny is so much better. Listen to him earlier in his career. Dio 🤟🤟🤟
Dio is god in Italian!
Dio in Italian means God
