One of the finest actors ever...he just takes over the screen whenever he appears. Very few have had that ability. Thank you TVC for the upload..thank you very much.
Wow! I had no idea what a powerful actor Lon Chaney was. I've seen, of course, The Phantom of the Opera but, until now, I'd never seen any of his other films. I love the silent movies simply because the acting must be powerful in order to convey the message of the character. I've just become a Lon Chaney fan!
The ending always chokes me up. It's so crazy to know that Chaney has been dead for 84 years and this movie is almost 100 years old. It's kind of crazy watching this movie and seeing the scenes and going back in time for a brief moment and wondering what it would have been like living in the 20's. The music Pacabell's Cannon really captures the moment.
Wow! My first seeing a silent movie, and my first seeing Lon Chaney Sr. in action. He was brilliant, he can tell the whole story without uttering a word. His facial expression and especially his eyes, he projected pure evil....statue wasn't needed. The character was so realistic...he looked and resembled the actor Jack Nicholson! 🤔?? 🤣One of my favorite scenes, is when he realized, he messed up by losing his temper, and then tried to clean up his act! I couldn't stop laughing. He would look down all depressed like, then slowly look up at her to see if his act was convincing! 😂Loved every bit of it. His eyes said it all.
I always liked the story when someone saw a spider in the movie studio they would yell "Don't step on it it might be Lon Chaney". A true master of his art a shame it wasn't longer.
Amen to that! I'll never understand how anyone could think that the Pachelbel Canon would contribute anything to this powerful and dramatic film. It comes off as nothing more than elevator music in the context of "The Penalty". Not to take anything away from those who enjoyed the Pachelbel in this film, a music track should support the action, not sound random. It is why pianists or organists played live with the films in theaters. I think Kino has added new original music to "The Penalty".
For sure. Not helping matters was that film before 1950 contained nitrate which deteriorated badly with age. Thank goodness many still survived & restoration if needed is always an option.
Lon Chaney is one of the greatest actors to have graced this planet. An absolutely brilliant movie.
Thank you.

I love Lon Chaney! I got a total kick out of him playing such a wicked character in this movie!

Must have hurt having his legs tied up like that and having to walk around on them.
.....The actor remember me about Jack Nicholson.......You can see the madness in he`s eyes.... Just fantasic from my point of view.
Another film on my waiting list I can get to, thanks.
Man... do my knee's hurt.

That "If you think you look like Satan.." killed me.
Genius.
Didn't they have another music?
Does anyone know the name of this haunting melody? I love it so! Thanks in advance! And I absolutely love Lon Cheney! He was an absolute genius!
Un capolavoro

Who did the score?
Why for the love of Christ did you use this music

It's so annoying
Poor Lon, he always ended badly!
I thnk this is the first Chaney film I've seen where he actually gets the girl!
The sound track is from the farthest reaches of the night before the dawns' first light ~ to die for
1929 reissue.
wow I thought this film was lost. The one he did before this one "The Miracle Man" is sadly lost.
Wish I could go back in time to save these classic's not just Cheney's but especially his.

Anyone else here for 'curios and conundrums'?
the soundtrack sounds like it comes from a jrpg.
