  • The RunCam HD 2 is a leading candidate for a budget Action Camera for FPV video recording. RunCam is releasing a new version of this camera with a 170 degree wide angle lens. We'll take a look at the pros and cons of this style of camera, and investigate the features of the RunCam 2 specifically.
    Thanks to RunCam for sending this camera for review. The RunCam 2 is available from here: shop.runcam.com/runcam2/

    I ordered one of these about a week ago and received yesterday in Australia. It also came with a cable to power it off the quad main battery or PDB making it even lighter. The cable also has the ability to start and stop recording off a RX output. Haven't tried this yet but means you can control the recording. Really good value for the money. I bought as a replacement for my gopro3 which I lost with my quad in a lake!

    Been using mine as a dashcam. Dremelled small holes with a PCB drill because the mic was too quiet.
    Haven't tried it on RC as yet but assume it will need some strategic foam inside now.
    There is also a RX switch cable available for on/off/pics BTW.
    Special battery tab grabbing tool for the fingernail 'challenged' is the back plate :-)
    Thanks much again Joshua. Best non-droning technical drone (quad) channel around I think!

    Good review. I think it is worth trying open cell foam over mic hole, in this case.

    "you're going to learn something today"!-- and I do-- every time! Forget the clothes "man"-- Rock on. You, without a doubt are the best Technical Adviser for Racing Drones on the Utube, for our learning. Thanks for your comments. If you have any more ideas-- 1) cleanflight works, no receiver. 2) 2 new builds, X 210's, 4 in 1 Flycolor stack. Cleanflight will not connect.
    Thanks Joshua,

    Try the 330ohm resistor between the microphone pins. It seems that the mice has a to high line volume.

    Hi Joshua,
    Thank you for the review. I’m getting into drone flying and fpv. My question is: when running the runcam 2 with fpv out to a 5.8 ghz transmitter, can I control options via the WiFi app? Such as take a still shot while in the air or am I stuck with continuous recording while in the air? If possible is there an action camera you can recommend that is capable of this option if the runcam 2 isn’t?

    @WingFPV 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is the only cam I will use on my wings. Its low profile creates less drag and I can tell you that I have flown a wing or two straight into the earth rather fast and the only thing that survived was the RunCam 2. I also keep one or two in my flying bag to capture B roll footage. Oh and as far as the wind noise because I am not super worried about audio I hot glue over the mic, this cuts out the wind noise but still leaves enough audio on playback to hear the motor.

  • @gadgetmerc
    @gadgetmerc 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I only use the RunCam2 (pre-ordered it when it came out) on fixed wing only due to know painful it is to mount on the quad (session 5 for quads). Cutting weight by being able to fly without the battery is a big feature in my opinion. The other feature is that you can get ok latency on the analog out. Normal fixed wing flying at 1080 is just fine. I do drop down to 720p recording to get lower latency when flying proximity though. When you remove the battery and FPV camera you have a huge weight savings. I have be able to add HD recoding to really small airframes. Not exactly helpful on a quad but wanted to mention it.

  • @FlyerTuck
    @FlyerTuck 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    JB, the GoPro has a mic on the front and the back and has an algorithm that negates wind noise choosing the best source for audio.

      I turned off comments not because I was afraid of detractors, but because, like I said in the video, I'm not really interested in discussing this topic. I appreciate the support, but when I make a vlog like that and get slammed with support, it kind of feels like I'm pandering. So I almost turn off the comments more for preventing the outpouring of support than for the haters. I know most of you support me--thank you!

    Great video. As always. Wanted to drop you a line....Runcam 2/3 are both manufactured with remote control options onboard. Something I use religiously as a long-distance FPV'r. Unbelievably Runcam has stopped producing the cable required to operate either camera remotely. I have written to them multiple times and receive the standard " the required cable is no longer sold". The use of remote control is a blessing considering the limited operational time due to the battery size and weight. Any chance this issue has crossed your desk...and if so, any suggestions on how to replace the cable? Thanks.

    Still using the Yi, it's a fantastic little camera for the price (well, not anymore since they stopped making it and prices skyrocketed). I guess Session 5 is where it's at now, but it would be interesting to see a comparison between different low budget cameras. There are popping up a lot of new cheaper ones these days.

    • @ZeroFPV

      I bought an international version in December for $65 @Gearbest. At the moment it's $73. It has a far better battery than the old model (about 90min recording) and it does up to 2304x1296p@30 without modification (with scripts 2560 x 1440p@30). With some scripting you get "Superview" and "Protune" too, and up to 40Mbps bitrate. It's impossible to get more bang for the buck. Can't understand the "hate" from Josh.

    Your statement about the angle is wrong if you think about it. It is angled to match the fast forward flight like the fpv cam you are looking through. Unless you are just hovering, at which point both your fpv cam and your HD cam for recording are getting nice images of the sky - but you are not flying fast to where the profile makes a difference. Moving into flight as normal with a quad, then the profile tilts, and it is then again low profile as the angle matches the angle of the quad, or roughly so, needed for the fast forward flight.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My point is not about aerodynamics, just about how far out from the top plate the camera extends. The Mobius style cameras get more unwieldy as they get more uptilt.

    • @ZeroFPV
      @ZeroFPV 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mini quads aren't aerodynamic at all. They are flying bricks with a high power to weight ratio.

    I literally about to drive to Best Buy for a new GoPro. I'm leaning toward the session 5 but I wanted your opinion. I'm considering getting the 1st gen session to save a little cash. Is the difference in image quality huge? I've had the hero 3 silver since it came out and I was perfectly happy with the image quality. Should I save $100 or will I regret not getting the 5? I'm sorry I just sometimes seek 3rd party justification on large purchases sometimes. If you were on a tight budget but needed an hd cam which one would you choose?

    The RunCam II is a very light camera and even lighter if its the only camera. The biggest advantage is that you can fly FPV through it without any noticeable latency. Can you make a video of you flying from the RunCam II output?

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is literally no way the live output from the RC 2 has low enough latency to be used for FPV. I can't believe it. Has anybody got an actual number?

    • @agennello1
      @agennello1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I fly it all the time on both quads and planes. Try it.

    • @agennello1
      @agennello1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a separate analog signal just for FPV. I suspect that this is where some of the RC Eagle tech came from.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really??? Wow. That is something. So the video output is split off from the sensor separate from the HD recording. If that's true, it's truly impressive.

      @mwilliams7815 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joshua Bardwell I've actually tried this and the latency although fairly low, it's not low enough to fly comfortably. the frame rate i felt suffered a bit also. seemed kinda jerky. never tried it again and prefer my hs1177

    I wish they would design them with a built in 30deg angle, as in the body of the cam would lay flat, but the lens would be at a angle. That's alright for general flying, and for speed we would only need to tilt it a little more. Means it would suck for fixed wing tho. Even better, have the front on a hinge so we can adjust it.

    I've owned 5 of these cameras and they have all had some kind of problem with the PCB-mounted power button. After 10-20 flights the button stops working and the camera becomes useless because you cannot turn it on or start recording. It's a shame because this camera is pretty awesome otherwise. I wouldn't recommend this camera to anyone.

      Brent Simpson there's 2 mods to drastically improve sounds quality on these. one is to solder a 330ohm resistor across the mic pins and the other is to replace the mic entirely with a better quality that also has a lower gain.
      in addition, physically rerouting the mic (whether you do the resistor mod or the replacement mod) to the back of the casing will eliminate almost all wind noise.

      hahahahahahahaha. Is MOV objectively worse? Or just harder to work with? Ever since I got Premiere I don't worry to much about these things ;-)

      Joshua Bardwell objectively yes! file extensions don't alter quality. they only store header info. if you use a free vid editor you will need to convert to mp4 otherwise premiere pro is what you need
