Really good job. We have been living in Florida for 14 years, after being Michigainians for more than 60 years. Your show helps not being there. We traveled and camped all over the state. However,we could have done more.

That Was Wonderful! Great Job Poppins!
Next Year You Should Do A Show On Midland MI Santa House And World Famous Santa School. Plus Midland Has A Gorgeous Historic Courthouse They Light Up, As Well As The Downtown Lights And Shopping. A Real Nice Visit At This Time Of The Year.
Ah Christmas ... My Saintly Mother Was Polish And My Father Slovak, And Both Catholic. So In The Catholic Church Calender Advent Is The Preparatory 40 Day Season Before Christmas And Christmas Season Begins On Christmas Eve And Runs Through The Epiphany (The Baby Jesus' Presentation At Temple) Or Even For Some 40 Days To Candlmas (Feb2?). So Christmas Started On Christmas Eve. A Lot Of People Still Keep Their Christmas Lights Up Til Feb 2 Where I Live Here In Wyandotte MI Due To It's Polish Ethnicity. So Anyway We Never Set Up Our Christmas Tree Until Christmas Eve. Never Saw Any Presents. In Fact When We Were Young We Had To Go To Bed And My Mother And Father Set Up The Tree, Wrapped The Presents For 10 Kids And Set Them Under The Tree And Kept Cooking Christmas Dinner Through The Night. All So When We Kids Woke Up Santa Had Magically Been There While We Slept. Of Course I Kept Those Traditions Going As A Single Dad With My Two Boys! It Was Wonderful! Lotta Work, But I Miss Those Days!

I am a recent sub to the channel and I just found this. I am a Michigan "ex-pat", grew up in Muskegon and now live in Huntsville, AL. I find it very interesting that returning soldiers from the Civil War established the first Christmas traditions in MI, kind of a neat touch-stone, but honestly the family traditions really hit home. I have vivid memories of playing cards (complete with table knock when you're done playing, Poppins!) with my mom and dad. They are both gone now, but the memories are very fond. I do miss the cold and snow a bit at this time of year as well. Looking forward to many more Viking adventures in my old stomping grounds! A suggestion: Maybe a side-trip to explore the Muskegon Blockhouse, on the lakeshore of North Muskegon. Very interesting history. 🙂

Point of order: yes Franconia is now part of Bavaria, but it wasn’t always. Even today, the Fränkisch will often take umbrage (if silently) at being lumped in with Bayern.
