Wow this is a amazing. I'm starting my first tank this week actually. 45 Gall. Got a sweet deal from a guy who was moving and got rid of his 60 pounds of dry live rock for 120 bucks. I'm very excited but a little nervous at the same time. Been researching like crazy and watching all sorts of videos. Thanks for sharing this its awesome.
That's the right thing to do! Do your homework, and take it slow. It's not hard, but it is particular. Internet based forums like TheReefTank, Reef2Reef, and ReefCentral are a big help to newcomers as well.
My tank used to be so noisy. The main thing that make it super quit is I got LED lighting. I have no need for cooling fans any more. I do have a chiller and when it kicks on its a bit loud but only for a short time. All I hear is the water that is being released into the sump from the overflow. Kinda soothing. Loved the vid and the time action shots. Super cool. Thanks.
My husband and I just started our first couple reef tanks together; we are about 3 months in and it’s been so much fun watching the coral growth! This video was super inspirational! Now he wants to turn his pi into a time lapse camera lmao.
this is awesome man. I love how you used the pin setup. i've heard of it for a while but haven't dived into the technology yet. this looks like an awesome application of it and it just shows how much more we have to learn and gain from the aquarium hobby. maybe years from now we will be able to make 360 view shots of coral growth. I love seeing the hobby being expanded and you sir are at the cutting edge!!
I've watched this at least 50 times myself. Inspired me to do the same with my tank. Got one go pro for each side boob. Lookin forward to seeing thr growth in a few years!
Do it!!! I love to see people setting this up. When you create the video feel free to link it here. That way people that find mine will be able to see yours as well.
Hello! This is an older website that I put up, and the formatting is not perfect, but these is the directions on how to setup this timelapse Camera. sites.google.com/site/whiskeysreef/Dead_Silent_mixed_reef/raspberry-pi-timelapse
Thank you! You bring up a good point, the colored lenses for phones are great! I just haven't found a good one that is 58mm to fit this lens, and I've tried a few. I'd use it if I could.
👍Nice job..incredible time lapse!!👏👏👏 I’m sure you’ve since realized that it’s now quite easy to have a near silent sps reef tank with sump...by using a ‘bean animal’ style overflow system and carefully selected gear.
Thank you!!! That's the thing though,.. it was never "Perfectly" silent. The Bean would get slightly out of sync causing a little trickle,.. or a snail would go behind a flow pump causing a little rattle, or fans would clog with dust causing a slight vibration,.. etc,.. etc. It needed to be dead silent all the time,.. and that simply wasn't possible,.. with any tank as it turns out. That's why even the LPS one eventually moved to my office.
Whiskey2727 interesting. With my moving from herbie to a bean setup I got it dead silent by having the secondary drain (which keeps the overflow chambers level at a constant) at a 45 deg so it skimmed the surface and water silently flowed in and down. Mines made by Modular Marine and the weir has a cover..no snail or fish can possibly enter. As long as the overflow is sized for the correct gph, it’s definitely possible to have a silent setup.
I often find digitata more visually appealing than acropora bonus being that they are easier to keep and can tolerate lower lighting much suited to my other favourites like goniopora
You are totally correct on the light and easier care. I really do like the different growth forms that both Montipora and Acropora can take though. It's fun to have a mix of all of them.
i hav a 75 gallon reef and mine barely makes any noise i hav 2 fx6 canisters 1 skimmer 2 reactors 3 A160we kessil lights and a 36 watt uv sterilizer but i drilled my tank and installed everything inline heter skimmer uv and even a pump for flow i drilled the input and drilled outputs and there is barely any noise inline systems reduce noise by 80%
here's a project for aquarium owners: have your big showy tank, but set up a second, smaller tank in which you grow soft corals and very resilient coral species. Keep this tank very slightly too acidic. Corals make their skeleton from calcium carbonate - this is dissolved by acid. As carbon levels rise, there will be warmer waters which should favour coral growth, however the water will become more acidic as carbon dissolves in it. We are already seeing mass coral die offs. Perhaps corals which can adapt to more acid waters in a controlled environment will one day repopulate our oceans
That's an idea! I'm a huge proponent of responsible propagation, clubs, facebook boards, stores that grow out colonies and frag etc, etc. Trading is the best! Nothing in this tank or my current tank is wild caught that I'm aware of, everything started as a frag. My tank already ran with a fairly low PH due to CO2 in the home. Especially when I was running the CA reactor.
Chillers are certainly more effective, and they don't cause the evaporation that fans do, but I've found them to be louder than fans running at half speed.
Ummm,.. Nothing all that special. I did use reef roids about once a week, but more than anything daily feeding of the fish fed them. I used Misys and flake mainly, with other things thrown in from time to time for variety. I always tried to keep phosphate between 0.03 and 0.1, if it fell outside this I would feed more or less.
I'm assuming you were talking about when it was a purely SPS tank? Either way, this photo shows the 3 kinds of lighting I used and the Par numbers. Full SPS used LED/4T5 then 6T5, when it went soft/LPS I went back to 4 T5: flic.kr/p/Uk7jHv
I did actually, in fact I fiddled around with the light a bit on this system. First I had 4, 54W T5's, that turned out to be a little light for some of the more demanding SPS coral, so I added LED strips which basically put out about as much light as 2 T5 bulbs. Eventually the LED's became a headache, it was a DIY job and some of them kept burning out all the time and needing to be replaced due to condensation or fish splashing. At that point I simply put in 6T5's and was done with it, when I went back to softies I went down to just the 4T5, then when I moved into my office and started bringing SPS back I lit the last 2 T5's up again.
What'sthe name of the coral that is on the mid right section of the tank that is green/pink base with the green fluorescent spots? Not the sps one at the top right.
@@Whiskeys_Reef sorry I may be explaining terribly. It's the the most fluoro green piece in your tank, is relatively large and on the right section of the tank.
Thank you!!! I would not say that tank size and rock affects growth rate, except that a larger tank is easier to keep stable, and more rocks can have the same effect. Mainly I think Light, Temp, Alk, and stability effect growth more than anything else. Every time perams swing, or something changes it seems to set the corals back a couple months.
Epic!! Inspired me to do the same. Except the only code I know is the code to my high school gym locker. As a result... I asked my GF to code the raspberry pi for me :P. We set it to upload to google drive - 5 per day across 12 hr photoperiod :D. Hope to share it w/ you in 15mo.
You're right! I should. Unfortunately I had some huge changes in my life that forced me to sell this tank. It's super sad for me, BUT!!!!! I setup a 10G AIO while I'm in this "transition" phase, and I've been taking a timelapse of it's setup and development with a MUCH better camera. I'm hoping to have a higher quality video out of this. I still have some kinks to work out, but I have about 5 months of data so far, and the next video I'll post will be of that system. Look out for that soon.
Thank you!! When I switched to the more softie orientated setup I sold the corals to a local fish store that also has a maintenance business for huge tanks. He was able to move them into one of those systems.
Thank you!!!! I ended up having to move suddenly so this tank is no longer operating. I was able to get all the corals and other life out into the local community, so that was really great. Equipment just went,.. Never fear though! I'm working on a brand new time lapse! The only system I have left is a Nano, but I'm taking pictures of it from the beginning so hopefully in a few months I'll have a new video to share.

Great 👍 job nice set up
Thank you!
love the channel man keep it up these time lapses are great
Thank you Andrew!
the spongodes in the bottom corner is really cool, I have some I hope grows as fast as yours
I loved that guy! The brown polyps weren't the best, but the growth form made it totally worth it.
Great job man.
Camera is cool. Have you got any more info? What is required

Its beautiful in spite of not using lens filters to enhance the coloration.

Would it be better to run a Water chiller in combination with a water heater instead of using fans?

It's beautiful! Philippines 😊
Holy s**t dude what are you feeding your corals?! That is pretty epic growth for a lil over one year!

@@Whiskeys_Reef you using LED lighting?
T5 sorry just heard that in vid
@@Whiskeys_Reef just curious what do you keep your alk at?
This is great and I want to do something like this. Appreciate the motivation
When you do it let me know where it's posted! I love seeing growth shots.
Love this.
Thank you!
OMG is that a giant clam?
Love the time-lapse. What was the par on those green birds-nest colonies?

@Whiskey2727 what is the fury green coral on the right middle bottom?
That is a special branching form of GSP. Instead of growing on the rock it prefers to cup the mat and grow branches. Coolest form of GSP I've seen!
Extraordinary video, oh my boots 😱😎🤩
Thank you!
Did you adjust the lighting at all when decided to add softies to the tank and remove the SPS?
I did actually, in fact I fiddled around with the light a bit on this system. This is very cool and informative. Does tank size and rock size affect growth rate? Bigger tank/rocks=faster growth?
