Just watched this after watching the video of his 2002 performance of the same song, almost 20 years (to the day) apart. I think he was just starting to find his solo/lead voice in 2002 (and of course he was grieving and not-yet-sober then). He has found and developed that voice, age has added extra dimensions to it, and it should serve him and his songs well for years to come.
