    Wowza beautiful!! I was just looking at Etsy to purchase one of these as a seating chart for my wedding for like $200 bucks but after watching this video I might try to attempt myself! If the thrift store doesn’t have a frame like that where else can you get glass from that would be the cheapest option?

    • @MarissaExplains
      @MarissaExplains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brooke! Oh yes, they can be quite pricey buying them already done... DIY is the way to go. 😄 So I've always found that at least one of the thrift stores in my area will have a large art piece like that, so I've not struck out yet. But in case you don't find one, I can't think of another cheap source... you'd probably have to buy one from Walmart or Target. You might be able to get a clear shiny plastic piece like the kind that comes in large poster frames, that could work if it's big enough. But hopefully you can find something at the thrift shop since they're only a few dollars. 😊 Good luck on your wedding board! ♥️

    Wow 😍 a just wonder what kind of brush do you use? Do you have to use one “special” brush for acrylic paint?

    • @MarissaExplains
      @MarissaExplains  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! 🤗 For this purpose i used a cheap 2" paintbrush from the hardware store, most likely Blue Hawk brand. Better brushes don't leave as many brush strokes, so the cheap ones work great for this purpose where you want brush strokes! 😄

    • @MarissaExplains
      @MarissaExplains  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Carla! Congratulations! 😄💍 As long as your words don't need to be longer than 2 feet, the Cricut Explore Air 2 is a great choice! It's more affordable than other models and has really high ratings on Amazon: (amzn.to/2Sr6lqX). You can't cut without a mat with a Cricut, but they do sell a 1 foot x 2 foot mat that you can use for longer pieces. If you need something longer than 2 feet, then I'd go with the Silhouette Cameo 2 or 3... You can cut vinyl without a mat, so you're not limited in the length; only limited to the height (1 foot high). 😊

      I'm glad it helped! 😃 I usually use acrylic paint from Craftsmart, Folk Art, or Martha Stewart - found at Michaels or on Amazon! 😊 I don't know that you could easily remove the paint (I've never tried it)... But maybe try a paint thinner/stripper, or just take a razor blade to it? Might be worth a try!

    Thank you so much for this video! It is exactly what I was looking for. However, I don’t have any experience with making acrylic signs, but I’m still confused with a few things..
    1. What type of paint did you use for the painting the glass? Can you share the details?
    2. How can I buy the personalized lettering to stick on the glass? Where can I buy it and what should I ask for?
    Thank you in advance!

    • @MarissaExplains
      @MarissaExplains  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Ingrid! So glad to hear it!
      For the paint, you can use any acrylic craft paint - some popular brands are Craftsmart, Folk Art, and Martha Stewart. I find them at Michael's in little bottles. They have different finishes, so you can buy a flat chalky finish, a satin finish, or a pearl finish depending on the look you want! 😊 For the stencil, I searched Etsy for "custom stencil" and found a bunch of sellers, like this one: www.etsy.com/listing/645143185/diy-custom-stencil-vinyl-stencil-wood
      They will work with you to design the lettering in the size you need, and then mail you the vinyl for you to use.
      Hope that helps! 😊

    • @MarissaExplains
      @MarissaExplains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh interesting!! I wonder if the tool you were using pushed air into the paint? Sometimes foam rollers can do that. I'm sure it was super cute, and those are sometimes things that only us as the artists even notice. 😁 If you do another one, maybe a little fan blowing on it would pop the bubbles, or try a different tool to paint!

    If I wanted to handletter this with an oil based pen, should I letter on the opposite side of the acrylic paint? or over it?

    • @MarissaExplains
      @MarissaExplains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh that would be pretty! I would still paint the color on the back, and hand letter the front with your pen. The paint isn't always smooth so I'd be afraid it would make your letters bumpy if there was texture. 😊

  • @shea-leighwhittingham3658
    @shea-leighwhittingham3658 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, love your video, it turned out so pretty!! Does anyone know why these signs have the writing on the front and then painted all over the back? Can "you" not just do both on the back and seal it or is there a specific reason why everyone does it this way? I'm so curious x

    • @MarissaExplains
      @MarissaExplains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Shea-Leigh!! I'm not exactly sure, but I'm just guessing if you were to put the paint on the same side as the lettering, the vinyl could come out bumpy because the paint isn't usually perfectly smooth when it dries - especially if you did more than one coat! Also, if you did both on the back you would have to cut the vinyl letters in reverse so it would read correctly when applied. :) If anything, you would do the paint and the letters both on the front so you could apply the vinyl without having to cut the letters backward. That's just my guess!

    Hi there! Great video. I’ve never done a sign on glass. Only on acrylic sheets, but I do have a question. 1. Have you done it on acrylic? 2. If so how in the WORLD do you keep the acrylic paint on the back from scratching off so easily? Literally you rub it while transporting and it rubs off! 😫 thanks in advance!

    • @MarissaExplains
      @MarissaExplains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Becka! I actually haven't applied to acrylic 😬 I wonder if using a different kind of paint would help? 🤔 Acrylic sheets are definitely safer than glass for transporting, and wouldn't break - but I didn't realize they would give so many issues with the paint!

      Hi! Yes if you would like to protect the design, I recommend Aleene's Spray Gloss Finish. It is a clear spray that you spray on top of your design to protect and seal it in. 😊 Test it on another glass surface first just to make sure you like how it looks when dried, before using it on a keepsake or something special!

      Hello!! I've not tried removing the paint (I have removed the letters so the sign can be re-lettered). I imagine you may be able to use a paint stripper? Or scraping it with a razor blade may do it? It would just take some time and work to get it off. 😊 Maybe try searching for how to remove acrylic paint from glass - you may get some good ideas!

    • @MarissaExplains
      @MarissaExplains  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It all depends on what font you end up using! I would start by measuring the width of your acrylic sheet. Then in Silhouette Studio (or Cricut software if using a Cricut), draw a box the width of your sign, and make sure the letters fall well inside the box. For a 30 inch sign for example, I would make my letters about 20 inches so there is a few inches space on each side. 😊
