Runyu character is a good example of how messy and complicated being a human is. His nature as an immortal is good, gentle, chivalrous, generous, pure and sincere. He is the underdog, the quiet hero who doesnt get the credit or showoff for his goodness. Phoenix is the opposite. He is the star of the show, Firey and bright, the favorite of everyone. Runyu was happy to stay behind the scenes and supported Phoenix to be the star, Until they both wanted the same thing, Jinmi. He even told Phoenix that he never fought over power or prestige with him. As your older brother, I protected you and let you win. But this one time I want to be the winner, because my entire life I had no one's love or praise but Jinmi is my best friend.
Two brothers who would die for each other end up enemies over fighting to have the same woman. In the end, she kills herself to stop their fighting, This is a good lesson that attachment leads to endless suffering, misery and even depression.
I feel pity for Runyu, because he was such a depressed person from darkness of obsession desire to have Jinmi. In the end, he was heartbroken, hated himself for all the immoral actions harming others, and still without any love. This is a lesson about Karma and Destiny.
Runyu knew that she was with his brother first. So he's wrong for even going after her in the first place... period

Runyu’s character is so pitiful. Even Good Boy, Han Jipyeong (Kim Seonho character in Start Up) wasn’t as unfortunate as Runyu. I felt sorry for all the pain and suffering you have to go through, Runyu 💔
He knew all along his brother was in love with JinMi, his brother was the first to see, know and love her. He should have let go, but he intentionally use her naiveness to trick her into loving him and hurt his brother. He saw she already given herself to him, but know,he pretended like nothing happened. And Xufeng, is a whole force,he don't back down, he go for what he wants with honesty no game.
Runyu can actually remove the Yun elixir and yet he didn't, he actually repaired it. Jimni was right all along that Runyu doesn't know what love is. Runyu is torn between Love and Power sadly, you can only choose one. Runyu already knew he can't have Jinmi so he did choose to scheme everything to Power. Jimni as innocent as she is was destined to find true love with Xufeng, Xufeng fell in love with her naiveness and beauty and as for nature, the heart always knows what TRUE LOVE is.

Fragile Life yeah. Xu feng was so confident confessing his love in front of the Flower Fairy, Runyu and Princess Bian. No hesitation or embarrassment at all. He was so sure of it.

I don't think he cared about power at all. The only reason he usurped his father's throne is because his father tricked and manipulated his mother and ruined her life, and his stepmother murdered his mother's entire species in cold blood. He wanted revenge as well as freedom. He spent his entire life at other people's mercy, expected to be grateful to his father and stepmother for the privilege to live, even if they made his life a living hell. He didn't care about ruling the world; he just didn't want to live at other people's mercy. As far as Jinmi goes, I don't think his feelings toward her had anything to do with power. Jinmi's innocence (which Kuanglu and Xufeng lack) and kindness (which everyone else lacks toward him) was what attracted him to her. He thought of her as the only good thing in his life, and he was desperate to hold onto it even if it means resorting to doing bad things. He didn't think he had anything to lose anyway, and with the way he's been treated over the years, he didn't feel like he owed the world anything. Now, this was definitely not going to be a healthy relationship, and Jinmi's right to get the hell away. Either way, though, I don't think Runyu is simply power-hungry.
You can have love and power though depending on what your job is. But you can’t force someone to love you no matter how powerful you are. I’m sure he could have found someone else who loved him.

Even though I addressed this in another review, just have to mention. Technically, Jinmi wasn't RunYu's fiancee. The actually arrangement was between the eldest daughter of the Wind and Water Immortals, but the chance of those two having a child together was less than zero, the child of the Water Immortal had to do. What would have happened if she was the daughter of the Wind Immortal instead or, if they both had daughters with other Immortals? Run Yu couldn't take the chance as Jinmi already spoke to her father about breaking the engagement. For all those who believed he truly loved her, why would you deny her the ability to love, just to chain her to you with an agreement? You just showed, you didn't care about what she wanted, only about winning at all cost, as if she was a prize.

Exactly! He couldn't manipulate or control her heart, so he cut it out. He was never concerned about her feelings, wants, or needs. It was always about him and how she made him feel. She was a substitute for his mommy-issue feelings of loss, neglect, and abandonment. Classic signs of a potential abuser. He would hurt her to make her stay with him while convincing the world that he adored her - narcissistic personality disorder.

Ultimately, Runyu became just like his ruthless, empty-hearted, self-serving, murderous, power-hungry father.
He never wanted power. He just wants her love...so he thought by having power, he can however win her no matter what.

Jin mi is portrayed as a dumb gold digger coz of that pill
when i read the novel, i didnt care for runyu all that much. but the drama make him so much more pitiful but also so much more hateful. in the novel, runyu never messed with the pill - he didnt even know but just guess that something is wrong with jinmi because of how emotionally-stunt she is. the actor playing runyu here is so good. i hate him and what he done to jinmi. i find that he so selfish but at the same time my heart break for him. i dont agree with him but i do see that it is so unfair for him. he lost both power and love, so he chose power.
the most pitiful is jinmi of course. she is even more pitiful than phoenix.
to me in this series, phoenix character is actually the most bland. runyu is the most complex, and jinmi has the most personal growth. Phoenix grew up receiving love, Jinmi was denied the existence of love, and Runyu desperate for love but never receive any. in the end, the phoenix who always had love learn it is not always easily given and it cost him his life and rebirth to earn his true love. Jinmi discover her true self by dying twice, one with her heart and second with her physical being. Runyu learn that love cannot be forced, it must be earned or given, so in the end he still did not receive love because he didn't let himself receive it.

Everyone feels bad for run yu and i can understand why because of his past but this is just not the way. He took advantage of jinmi's innocence and fooled everyone into marrying her also the fact that he hated murderers but itself got involved into finishing off anyone who came between jinmi and himself. Not to forget that he forced jinmi to love him when he clearly knew that she was in love with Phoenix. In the end, his love wasnt as pure as his brother

Folks really??? The title is misleading to get you to click on the video. It's an excellent drama. If you watch the show, no one knew JinMi's true identity until after she had been living with/accompanying Xufeng for more than 100 years. She already loved him. They had just returned from the mortal realm where they fell in love again, and Xufeng killed himself to be with her when she died of poison. They were buried together in their wedding clothes. Runyu knew all of this and knew that JinMi didn't love him at all. He manipulated the engagement. Please stop the JinMi hate. She wasn't bad or immoral. How about Runyu trying to sleep with her (and letting his tail out??? symbolism. LOL) after he saw that she had slept with Xufeng? He tried and failed, then cruelly put that Yun Elixir back in JinMi's chest as revenge when her love of Xufeng had set her free. This is the best done love triangle I've ever seen in a drama. You feel sad for them all. But honestly, Runyu was JinMi's doom. Watch the whole show not just clips, then judge them.

He can't force jin me to be his fiance just because their father have agreement to married them before both of them growing up. What a stupid agreement. Xu feng not steal jin me from run yu. It was clear in a later episode that Jin Mi didn't know you're not supposed to have sex with someone while being engaged to someone else. She's been sheltered her whole life, either being confined in the Water Mirror of the Floral Realm or the Healer Valley of the Human Realm. She only found out afterwards that what she did was morally inappropriate. However, Xu Feng obviously knew that and still had sex with his brother's fiancée knowingly. The title makes it seem like it was Jin Mi's fault, but she really didn't know. Xu Feng was the one at fault here. He should have gotten the engagement called off first.
Runyu knew that his brother loved Jinmi even before it became known who she was. He also knew than Jinmi had the same feelings for Phoenix even if her love expression was hindered. I do not agree with those that say Phoenix received love and took it for granted. One can not be blamed for being loved by his parents. He was a good brother and when it came to Runyu, he was on his brother's side. I pity Runyu, but even without Jinmi in the mix, he would still have made some messed up decisions because he was too hurt and not able to let go. He wanted vengeance and power but all for the wrong reasons. He hurt the people that were most dear to him, hurting himself in the process. Runyu had a twisted way of loving, he wants to possess. I would love to see a redeem story for him but I guess when you commit the kind of crimes he did, redemption is always going to be bittersweet,nevertheless he deserves happiness.

(xufeng) one that will do anything for love even start a war make yiu a hostage aka toxic (runyu) one that loves you unconditionally (kuanglu) one that is obsessed to have you and willing to do anything (suihe) and one who doesnt know love (jinmi) one that thinks he knows love but didnt 🤣 (taiwei)

For those who defend and pardon Runyu's action for his bitter past, just think if you know someone like him.
1. He often comes to Jinmi's room when she is sleeping, he comes without invitation. What kind of gent would do such thing?
2. He used her to get rid of XuFeng in the name of love. All he wants is just getting revenge and taking the throne. He will use anyone, anything, to get anything he wants. He never knows the meaning of love and sacrifice. He only loves himself and his ambition. He saves Jinmi from dying not because of love. He knows Phoenix will revive, and he needs Jinmi to be one of his pawn to defeat Phoenix. He will win over the brotherly rivalry by getting married to Jinmi.
He is really creepy and full of schemes. The person who only think of himself cannot feel love at all and do not deserve love.

Moreover, if you follow the series when jin mi confronted run yu, he said that when he saw the reality dream he was at the verge of taking his own life. So if jinmi tells him up front that she wants to cancel the engagement, run yu might and most likely do the worse. and if that happens, jin mi was the only person in the room with him so she will ultimately be marked as the murderer for killing run yu instead of a suicide.
but yes run yu eventually schemed and hurt everyone including himself but in terms of killing his own father and step mom he did not regret his decision😢

everyone says fish fairy is selfish but i think he is actually pitiful and also brilliant. he didn't give a damn about power before but when he finally did he was able to get what he want even if he used low means. he is pitiful because he lacked the love and warmth of his parents ever since he was a child. everyone ridiculed him, mocked him and when he finally did fell in love with someone, she happens to love his brother who had everything fish fairy ever wanted. it's sad actually to see that kind and righteous fish fairy we see at the beginning of the drama turns in to a monster

I thought so too, but the probability of those two having a child was slim to none. I believe the Wind immortal might have still been a Virgin so, oldest daughter of one of them met the requirements.

i think Run Yu's character is the most interesting one. His character development is indeed the best compare to others. Run Yu's nature was so kind, and pure. His character is really was really outstanding. How can he maintain be so kind at first while his younger life was so miserable? Having bad step mother and do not have anyone near him, so powerless even though he is immortal and the king son. Yet he still love and support his step lil-bro. But what Xu Feng did? I didn't blame them to in love with same girl, but still Xufeng is character a bit plain in the series.
Not to mention acting skill. Compare of the first male lead, Luo Yunxi (Run Yu) has more close up scene than the first lead. Luo Yunxi portrayed sadness and bitterns so swell from his eyes and gestures, makes audience can connected with his pain, that's why he is not main antagonist in here, he is more like ambiguous antagonist. many audiences still choose him
