I have a 2004 with the 4.0 got it with 135,000 miles and now current 143,000 oil changes are simple and it doesn't leak a drop of anything underneath
My previous Jeep was a 2005 WK HEMI 5.7 LITER nothing but problems with it, starter went out and driving in rain or snow I'd have water puddled to my ankles. Starter was difficult to swap and had to drop the drive shaft to remove they put in bad location. If anyone reads this don't waste time trying to remove through driver wheel well due to angle and only 1/10 margin error to fit

Owned 4 WJ's. The 99 4.0 got me through college. 2002 4.7, 2004 4.7 HO, and 2000 4.7 with QuadraDrive were good too, better power and engine but the 4.0 was such a great motor. I'd opt for a well maintained 4.7 in a laredo trim with selec-trac
My dad had a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ in gold and man did he LOOOOVE that vehicle. He got it to well over 200,000 miles. Unfortunately the main computer started shorting out causing the vehicle to randomly shut itself off, and to replace it would have been more than the vehicle was worth. Not only that, but you can only find the computer used. As much as he didn't want to, he decided to let it go.

I've got an 02 WJ Overland. Engine valve drop at 136k blew the motor, I had a new 4.7 put in as I plan on keeping it as long as possible. People who have them know what they've got.

Nice video, and really good presentation :) What you forgot to mention, is Europe and its 2.7 CRD , Mercedes combined with Mercedes gearbox x5 speeds. Which is easy tuning, to 200 HP and 500 NM. In USA it was black pearl with factory power 150 KW (195 HP) and 450 NM. Engine itself is unbreakable, use to run in Mercedes Sprinter like 1 million miles. Factory combined is 9-10l of diesel. I personally done mine on 2 inch OME EMU lift kid with 30.6 inch wheels 245/70/R17 with Jorn Red wheel distance 30mm on factory rims. As result, it doesn't feel as boat anymore, it feels near to every road SUV but off road it take holes much better. In Poland, we don't admit rough country that much, more like budget option. Either its OME EMU or Clayton ff road 4,5 lift or 6, combined with Bilstein. Every petrol designed lift kit include rough country give jump based on petrol original setup and its 46 cm from center of wheel to beginning of car fender. But 2.7 CRD was 49 CM instead and it had harder springs. So OME 2 inch lift kit for 2.7 CRD is designed to give 40 mm, which give 53 cm from center of wheel to beginning of car fender. In total OLD MAN EMU for 2.7 CRD give 2,78 inch lift kit and its stiff and hard enough but not too much and very comfortable. Although I guess CRD ones could be used for V8, but rare springs are designed for CRD and V8 the same, so they request polyurethane pads like 0.78 inch or 2 cm. What some of fans do in Poland and i know one good Garage, they re-build 3.1TD, kick this trash out and put in gear box from XJ or BMW X5 E53 a ZF gear box. Of course as engine most popular in off road world in Poland and its M57 boosted up to 250-280 HP and 500/520 NM, you cant do more because D30 and D40 cant hold on, but step forward are axles from wrangler Rubicon. How ever, I love V8 a lot and way it sounds, honestly for this car the best engine is 2.7 mapped to 195-200 HP and 470-500 NM ( which allow you to keep this car below 10l combined and 8 on highway ) include OLD MAN EMU 2 inch lift. For over landing but daily SUV. In USA you don't care about fuel, but in Europe salary compared to fuel price sux a lot, specially noways. In Poland of course 99% of V8 have GAS installation which i personally don't like, else they wouldn't drive it. Just to mention, in Poland there is a lot of custom parts for this model, we fix factory mistakes, and make this car way better. In my Jeep i have even changed gear box electronic for 2.7 CRD Polish production with life-time warranty, of course factory one suck big time.

Vladimir, that's an excellent summary of the possibilities / capabilities of the 2.7 CRD Jeep WJ in Europe.
I bought my 2.7 CRD two years ago now and have only just encountered a transmission problem. However, after researching this, I know exactly the point you make here within your post, in your final paragraph, that is the replacement of the PCB with a better engineered board. The gentleman I've been speaking to who deals in these is in Estonia and his website is one of the most comprehensive resources for 2.7 CRD problems I have seen. That and of course 'WJbible'.
You've also answered a question about the 2.7 Mercedes 5 cylinder and transmission in the 2.7 CRD. I have an 2004 E46 330D Touring and the engine and transmission are beautiful. In comparison to the WJ....well, there is no comparison and so I've often wondered whether anyone has performed a conversion. If so, that'll be a lovely thing. I find the WJ CRD a very capable vehicle, but you cannot say that the engine sound when under strain is 'on song'. Perhaps if de-catted, mapped and re-piped it makes all the difference?

I've had my '01 WJ 4.0 Laredo since new, and I still enjoy driving it every day with full confidence in its reliability. It really says a lot about a vehicle when the ownership experience still makes you feel that way after nearly a quarter century.

I own a pair of 2004 Jeep WJs. A Laredo 4.7V8 and an Overland 4.7 High Output V8. Live out in the sticks so they are ideal since there isn't much highway driving and mostly offroad in the dirt. Utterly reliable trucks both.
With the same kind of driving, whether mild or aggressive, would you say the High Output uses more fuel?
That 4.7 HO is a dream engine, unless it gets overheated. Then it's gonna drop valve seats.

@@andysaunders3708 At some point I intend to buy after-market aluminum radiators for both trucks. I've heard quite a few cautions about the effects of overheating to make such an investment good long-term insurance.
Listen, the WJ is the LAST of the solid front axle SUVs which means for many it's the last of the "real" SUV Jeeps. If you want a solid axle SUV a WJ and ZJ are the last and ONLY affordable options. XJs that aren't falling apart are $5000+, solid axle land cruisers which haven't been in the US since 97' are 5 digit $ in any condition. Beyond that for a solid axle front your choices are a wrangler or a 3/4 ton pick up, two of the most overpriced and impractical vehicles you can buy. I shouldn't need to mention the benefits of a solid front axle off road for articulation and strength over an IFS SUV like a 4runner, explorer or newer Cherokees.
The question is how many Jeep owners are going to go that insane off road with their WJs? Not many. And if you're looking for that much articulation for off-road then in Jeeps you should be looking at a Wrangler. Wranglers are the best rock climbers even over 4Runners. And yes, they seem impractical, but I live next door to a Wrangler owner. Wranglers have a cult following and the aftermarket support to back it up! WJs do not! Been trying to find some specific parts needed to fix minor issues on my WJ....needle in a haystack between eBay, Amazon, and near non-existent graveyards. That said the reason you buy the 4Runner over the WJ is the durability and reliability. I'm a 2003 WJ Limited V8 owner. I did get a unicorn in that it took almost 20 years for a gasket to blow. That's not the norm on a WJ. In dealing with both from friends the WJ was in the shop more often than the 4Runners. So the old adage of "you get what you pay for" is going to apply here. You WILL see 4th gen 4Runners in 15-20 years with 400,000+ miles still running. You won't see WJs like that unless they were baby'd and only driven by grandma to church and the store with 200k miles or less. And that's why Lexus GX 470s have a massive up-tick in the off-road communities. Lots were driven by soccer moms and grandamas. Saw one being sold near my house recently that was a 1 owner GX that the lady had her entire repair history and it was all from one Lexus dealership.
And the lack of WJ parts is a minor reason why I'm selling my WJ next year or so. It needs fender and bumper work, middle center console needs full replacement, carpeting needs replacement, driver seat finally showing major wear and tear, full power switch replacement and possibly motors on both right front and back passenger doors, blend doors are definitely broken as the right side blows cold even with heat at max, and more need repair. Just sunk $1400 into the engine repair so that'll last another 1.5-2 years. Not going to say the WJ didn't treat me well. It has lasted from the end of college to my late 30s. It got in a major wreck in my late 20s on the way to work and came within a few hundred of being totaled due to state insurance laws, but had zero frame damage. However, every friend I know that had a 4Runner during that time either only traded it because the wife said so, decided to quit off-roading/overlanding, or found no reason for a large SUV. Most of the rest are in good shape with more miles than my WJ.
I think if you're going to buy a vehicle that you only take out on weekends and on vacations to hit the trails and climb some then a WJ is a good investment. Or for a teen's first vehicle it's a solid one. However, if you plan on making it a daily driver I'd pay the extra for a 4Runner. Personal opinion.
@@davidfence6939 I agree woth you toyotas are tanks but they are super expensive even for old one with close to 300k. So the jeep is a nice alternative for a similar look. But its all about taking care. I had a nissan titan with 560k on it before it got wrecked.

Which year/s of the WJ has the solid front axle? I’m getting mixed answers.
@@edfox2725 ALL WJs (99-04' Grand Cherokees) have solid axles front and rear. ALL ZJs (93-98' Grand Cherokees) have solid axles front and rear. ALL XJs (84-01' regular Cherokees) are solid axle front and rear. All Wranglers every year are solid axle front and rear.

I use to have a lifted XJ and thought it was quite capable.
Then I went for a ride in a friend's 2003 WJ with the high output 4.7, 3" lift, 32" tires and welded rear diff. HOLY! Nobody would believe how amazing these are offroad, whether it's sand, snow or climbing. The power makes it next level and completes the package for a capable offroader.
I was convinced my friend had a front locker but he said it was open, that Jeep performed way beyond expectations.
*yes I do hear going too tall on the lift with WJ's wears out the transfer case fluid coupling, I've been told to keep it 3" or under for the best compromise
I have an 02 with the 4.7H.O. w Quadra drive and just recently got it so no work done yet but went off-roading with my friend in his 2018 Wrangler and I was going through everything smoothly first try while his got stuck on this super steep hill climb and it took a little maneuvering for most parts of the drive for him to be able to get through and I was just gliding through no problem. Of course my window motors have all died and been replaced and his are fine so he makes fun of that
I own 2 WJ's and 1 before. They're easy to work on if it's a 4.0 liter. Almost unstoppable off road, especially with a Quadradrive axle swap. Stay away from the dual climate control models. Had a ZJ and a YJ Wrangler. A WJ and a good driver will go anywhere you want.

The transmission with 2 down shifting gears you are referring to is the 42re. This transmission only came with the i6 4.0 and the occasional V8 with the selec trac transfer case.
The V8s used initially 45rfe transmissions.
This includes 4 drive gears and an over drive gear. They did a software upgrade in 2002 that unlocked a 2nd overdrive gear and they re titled it the 545rfe. This transmission is 10x better than the 42re and doesn’t have a separate downshifting gear.

Hate to be the guy, but the 42re does not have 2 downshifting gears. It's a hydraulic 3 speed auto with an Overdrive that is electronically controlled. So yes, it's a 4 speed technically. I've been researching til I'm blue in the face on what other transmissions I could upgrade my WJ 4.0 with, but sadly very few others will bolt to it directly. I would personally love to have a 5/45RFE behind my 4.0 but it hasn't been done yet. 😕

Building a 2001..4.0 right now..took me a month and plenty of $$$ to get the front suspension right without death wobble. Jeep= just empty every pocket..but love it. Building it to get me on the highway to the trails..going anywhere and getting me home.
I did not know that the WJ 4.7 had problems, because in my family we have had several and they have never had a problem, perhaps it is because the ones we had were all European (manufactured in Austria) and the ones with problems are the American ones
I've owned a 2004 Overland for 14 years. I chose it over the 4Runner due to superior towing and off road ability thanks to the V8 and Quadradrive and solid front axle. No regrets at all. BTW, the Overland does have rear AC vents and automatic wipers.

I got a 2002 ,4.7 h.o, with 160,000 got a 5" lift and 30" tires . Just replaced my front end .it kicks ass!!! ,like it more than my 2018 lol

Excellent video. My family currently has 3 Limited 4.7s. A '99 w/289,000mi, a '01 w/274,000mi, a '04 w/90,000mi and a '04 Overland w/290,000mi.
Reliability has been stellar with 1 heater core, 1 heater fan, 2 radiators, 2 alternators and 1 transfer case (in the '01,alot of off road) being the total of "major" repairs. All but the Overland are lifted.

i have a 2001 grand cherokee. had it since 19. got it when it had 130,000 miles. body in great shape a little rust on fenders but not critical yet. put alot into it,rebuilt trans,rear dif,fan,etc.little by little will have it all rebuilt to my standards.
I can obviously see this review was done a year ago but a really in-depth review thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm looking for my second WJ obviously I'm in the UK so I would personally go for the Mercedes five cylinder engine which is the 0M612 turbo diesel 2.7 CRD that comes in at a whopping 167 hp but it can be remapped up to 250 by and with a fuel efficiency remap you can average up to 40 mpg is which is phenomenal ✅👍🏻🍺

The laredo I got has the usual 4.0 engine but with leather seats and selec-trac transfer case. These WJs once you start lifting it 4 inches or higher be prepared to fix more of the suspension or steering parts. As I'm in the middle of a WJ project on my '02. Already on a long arm lift, with 32's and replaced the tie rod ends, upper and lower ball joints driver and passenger side. Now working on the steering box and dual steering stabilizer

My dad used to have a WJ Grand Cherokee when I was a kid, and this is my story about it:
It was July 2010, and we were on our way in our Vauxhall Zafira to pick up my dad’s new car to replace his old Vauxhall Frontera, a 2002 (52-reg) Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.7-liter Chrysler PowerTech V8 and 5-speed automatic, finished in a dark metallic blue with a black leather interior. While we were driving the last few hundred yards to the seller’s house to collect DU52XKW, I caught first sight of it in the windscreen, and after we pulled up at the seller’s house, we got out of our car and went over to inspect it.
The main reason why me and my family consider it to be one of the most comfortable cars we’ve ever owned, and why I consider it to me one of my favourite cars my family has ever had, was the seats, as they were some of the most comfortable of any car I had ever, ever sat in - when 10-year-old me sat down on them for the first time, I was in heaven as they were just oh-so-comfy - it wasn’t so much a car as a giant sofa with wheels and an engine, the Americans really knew how to make proper car seats back then!
Since then, the only car I’ve sat in that has even come close to how comfortable the seats in the Jeep were was an Infiniti M saloon (sedan in the US) I sat in while me and my family were at the Driffield Motor Show in 2013.
When we got home, I thought it was a much better car than his old Frontera, as it was more practical being a 5-door, and much more comfortable too.
The ultimate test for our Jeep came in August 2010, when we went on a caravan holiday to Great Yarmouth in it. During the extremely long and tedious 150+ mile drive, it proved to be well up to the challenge of hauling our Swift Conqueror caravan to the campsite we were going to be staying at, thanks to the incredible pulling power of that V8 - even if it did make the car a TREMENDOUS gas hog and went through gas like there was no tomorrow, but it did make a very nice noise which we called the “V8 roar”.
It also proved to be a very comfortable car to travel in as it ate up the miles, mainly because of how unbelievably comfortable and plush the seats were. On the way there, I watched one of my Top Gear DVDs on the aftermarket DVD headrests that we’d had installed in it, while my sister watched one of her Hello Kitty DVDs.
One day during our holiday, after we went to the nearby Tesco, while my mum was loading up the boot (trunk in the US) with shopping, my dad decided to “V8-roar” her by revving the engine as she packed the shopping away - she must have got a bit of a surprise when he did that!
Unfortunately, our holiday was cut short due to heavy rain the following day, and even though we only had the Jeep for 2 months, I still consider it to be one of my favourite cars out of all the cars my family has ever owned.

Did you know that these were available as WG ( the G standing for Graz (Austria), where the Magna-Steyr Plant is, where they build the G-Wagon)?
It is powered by the OM612 5-cylinder inline, a VTG-turbocharged, intercooled 2,7-litre mercedes common-rail diesel engine with hydroelectrcally variable camshafts that would put out 370 Nm, that would transform into 400 Nm after having passed the torque-converter of the mercedes NAG276 5-speed automatic drive. Tell you what : For beeing so overengineered (as german as it could possibly get), it turned out to be quite bulletproof. (Needless to say it sleekly doubles the milage...) That engine also ran in countless Sprinters, E-classes, ML270 and G270.
This Jeep is one of the very few cars thats officially rated to pull a 3,5 ton trailer here in Europe, which is why I bought it three years ago.
Back then you would get those for 5-6 k€, and that was the most bang for the buck you would get. Let me tell you : That window has closed.
Now it´s a priced possession. (In fact, you start to find the first insurers which would rate it as a youngtimer, offering fixed rate insurances.)
The Frankenstein-Jeep comes with downturns: You get to a Jeep-dealer, they´ll tell You "Its not a Jeep and we´ve thrown away the diagnosis cables for the obd2 10 years ago...". Coming to a Mercedes-Dealership they will tell You : "We are so glad we got rid of these guys, back then, the quality was so horrible. We can help you with the engine, but the circuit-board issue of that gear selection you´ll have find out for yourself...".
And of course the squishy seats are not the Mercedes-Solution to the problem. Look into old W123s or enen W124s, what would you find? Boxspring-Constructions ! And you still find craftsmen that can repair those...
It´s true, Jeeps do need some TLC from time to time. I just had mine fixed for more than I bought it for. Anything, that is worth having, is worth fighting for. And that´s where the rise in prices comes from, at least on this side of the atlantic.

I personally bought one and I'm content in the belief that any vehicle, regardless of make and model, will have issues, they come with the territory.
My Jeep's old enough to vote, but most of what I've laid out coin on were issues passed on by the previous owner.
There is nothing on any new car lot I'd trade Big Red for, new cars are junk.
The Overland edition added a wood section to the top of the steering wheel, adjustable pedals, suede trim on the seats (or two-tone in 2004), rain-sensing wipers, the H.O. engine (265 HP) and the wheel for the spare matches the other 4.
The suspension & steering sloppiness you are experiencing is definitely do to the mods by the owner. But yeah, the stock suspension is very good on-road and off.

4:12 my Laredo is fully optioned out with every option of a limited expect dual climate control and heated seats. I always found it odd how much you could almost eliminate the need for the limited with a optioned out Laredo
It’s interesting how old SUV’s are optioned. Same went for the 3rd Gen 4Runner. My dad had an SR5, which was the base trim, but had almost every option a Limited could have. Weird haha

Has a Rough Country suspension, that's why it rides like a mop bucket. Put a quality suspension and shocks on and it will handle much better than stock.
I have that exact model 4.7 but it runs fine in the colder months but cuts off during the warmer months and won't restart until it cools off wherever it's at even while driving!! Does anybody have any advice?

Well... everyone loves some v8 power .. so do I .. but due to how badly maintened most are, I decided to go with the i6 4.0 and after some months I realized it was asking for a rebuild... so I decided to go all out... rebuilt the transmission... engine, add a turbo to it... heck yeah. in my opinion, more reliable, easier to work on, and now MORE POWERFUL than the V8... No cons... thing sounds like a 2j lol on high rpms... but the small turbo on high rpm is doing all it can .. when I let off the gas it goes tchootchootchoootchooooo with a sneeze too lol people on car meets go crazy. I added a switch... to open or close the exhaust... have a snorkel on mine... had to get new door seals though lol this thing hauls trucks on my trailer like there is nothing back there... on normal driving it sounds like a big rig lol that with exhaust open... with it closed and closed windows its quieter than original due to the turbo. Well... I out mine through its paces as a Mechanic I 10000000% recomend a lift kit with airride on it... so when you hit the pavement you can drop it and gas it... and when you hit the dirt... air the bags up... the tires down and go anywhere I mean ANYWHERE. with the air suspension compressor I added a T connection... turn it on and air up tires even for costumers. Love my wj grandcherokee laredo. I don't think I will ever sell it. First car I bought when I came to the u.s. Best decision I ever made... It's so good I ended buying my wife one too hahahah but it's stock. nothing added to it. Mine has all the lights added to it... my small trailer has the winch to help load cars I can't fix in the road and have to take to my shop ... I have Loaded trucks as Big as 3500s and all I do is... Air up the back... air down the front .. and drive!!! GREAT GREAT car... it will last forever when well maintained... trust me .. Sometimes I topup oil lol replace the filter and go for it... when it gets dark I do a complete replacement... the turbo tend to like some oil... my wife's requires full oil replacement as it doesnt consume much... so it's usually one top up and then replace .. mine is 2 top ups, 1 top up with 1 filter replacement and one without... and then full replacement with filter. Can't get enough of mine!!!! I do have other cars but this is my do it all and possible SHTF rig. God bless y'all.
I love the wj, I have a 2000. I made sure I got one with the 8 cyl. , it gets better gas mileage than the 6. I get 20 mpg highway and it drops to 17 city , depends how I drive , If I'm good the mileage is good ( not to often ).
Is yours a high-output 4.7 or the regular 4.7?

As much as it swayed, I'd guess someone disconnected the sway bars for off-roading. That's common. Also, remember the Grand Cherokee was considered a luxury 4x4, so it will be a bit softer. They are a dream for long distance road trips.
I have a 2004 Limited that I'm going to sell cheap. it has 235,000 miles but starts and runs great, but it has issues from sitting too long.
EDIT: As I recall it was Daimler Benz (Mercedes Benz) not Porsche, with Chrysler-Jeep sharing mass manufacturing and shared platform assembly. Daimler Benz shared other technologies, including the Corsair 4.7/4.7 HO OHC engines, the NAG trans in the 300's and much more. I don't recall Porsche having anything to do with it but I could well be wrong. Daimler Chrysler were partners until they were bought in 2013 by Fiat (FCA or Fiat Chrysler of America.)
You did not mention the WJ from 2002 to 2004 were available with a special order (other than in the Overland) High Output 4.7L V8, with a steel forged crankshaft, forged connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, high compression pistons, special heads, valves, injectors, Premium Fuel Recommended, with up to 3:91 gears, a 545 RFE 5 speed automatic, Vari-LOC front and rear differentials, AWD, Part Time Full Time, Quadra-Drive, Quadra-Trac and much more.
Also, is yours missing the privacy shade for the cargo compartment?
There were little 4.7 HO's made between late 2001 and 2004 model years. Allegedly, there was only a 35 horsepower and 50 LBFT additional torque. However owning both, in the 4.7 and 4.7 HO flavor, I can say with the same gears and driveline, the 4.7 HO SMOKES the normal 4.7 in every way. I get 16 MPG average and 21 on highway on both.
My Limited's both have all the available options including the RB1 Navigation Satellite radio with 10 disc CD changer an AUX input, which I now have added a Bluetooth module , .. now even a Double-DIN radio kit allowing later radios up to those available currently, which integrate with the steering controls and changer, 8 speaker Infinity Gold and more
My 1998 5.9 Limited has all the options, in white with the 10 speaker Infinity Gold system with the rear sound bar sunroof and 3:91 gears
You can upgrade or reprogram the TCM (Trans Control Module) on the earlier 45 or 545RFE trans and get the extra gears. A simple swap with a recycled 2002-2004 TCM controller will unlock the 5th forward gear. One of mine is a Laredo the other a Limited with almost all the Overland options al less the cost.
All in all we own 7 WJ's and ZJ's in our family, including the Unicorn , a White1998 5.9 Magnum Limited , which picked up recently for 1200$. Those are selling for even more than any of the WJ's, though they are far less refined. With a HD SelecTrac Xfer case I swapped in for 100$, you have the fastest SUV made until the early 2000's Mercedes G-Wagon came out. It will smoke the rear tires effortlessly in 2 HI, maintaining the more than capable Part and Full Time 4X4, Low Range, or keep the factory AWD High Low range case fed by the beefy 46RE transmission with overdrive and lock up torque converter.
Of all the JGC WJ's we own, 3 of them are 4.0 HO liter equipped with the 42RE, which is easily rebuildable, and fairly cheap to rebuild. I did mine at 201,000 miles on our 1999 WJ .The same can be said for the remainder of the entire vehicle, maintaining considerable resistance to rust and corrosion when properly maintained,.. washed after snow/ice, mud and dirt cleaned out from all the cracks and crevices. All of our WJ's and ZJ's from the North East here in South Central PA are all but rust free, and we get a lot of snow, ice, plus plenty of places to mud bog and off road!
My 2003 JGC Limited 4.0 HO is in that Shale Green color you mention and I love it with it's Dark Slate colored pillow top leather and dark graphite carpet. The sunroof is still dry and everything works on the Jeep. It has a total of 109,000 miles on it and I bought it from the original owner' agent for 400$. All it needed was the hydraulic cooling fan system repaired, some oil leaks and tune up issues addressed. These consisted of resealing the oil pan, valve covers and timing cover gasket and crank seal, plugs, injectors and an exhaust manifold leak, which I replaced on both sides along with the heat shields, gaskets and all new manifold bolts. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy!
My '03 has those rain sense wipers and auto headlights, remote start, Skim Key Anti-Theft, every single option the Overland was equipped with and it is Trail Rated. Handling is very good being a Jeep, with a soft fairly stable , ride and a 3" lift spinning larger tires (265/70R17) on stock 17" Snowflake wheels. I picked up a set of perfect condition new take-offs, 5 for 125$.
People constantly comment to us when we are out regarding our WJ's and the ZJ's, especially the 5.9 Limited in Stone White, as they are all very well maintained plus super clean, in and out!
If you want a capable, easy, cheap to fix, durable, upgradable, on and off road SUV that cam be made into a trail beast, for very reasonable price of entry, the ZJ and WJ's are the best thing going. Around 1.5 Million WJ's were built between 1999 and 2004, making them most plentiful for new and used parts, with almost any conceivable upgrade or optional configuration(s) which are mostly plug and play. IMO, these are better overall than any other SUV made, both before and after it.

While Daimler Benz owned Chrysler for a time and produced the wj in Austria (My 2004 2.7 diesel being one) the Uni frame design was indeed from Porsche
AFAIK, the Overland was the only way you could get the HO 265 hp engine.

It drives like a Wrangler because of the short arms on the lift. If you want to maintain ride quality you need to go with long arms.
It's strange but the worn center piece in the rear suspension makes the rear wheels slide left and right. Bad swaying no matter what you do to the front.

You say it doesn't feel great in the corners, well with it having a lift on it the control arms should have been adjustable long arms or at least an adjustable mid arms. I have a 2000 WJ with a 4" lift and it handles better than most sports cars on winding roads and feels as if it's glued to the road. Best Jeep platform ever made 99-04 WJ's other than some of the older Jeep/AMC platforms.
Great point! Rough Country is also a cheaper kit so I'm not surprised it doesn't drive as well as other lifted WJ's

I'm going to say you have to hope for a unicorn with the WJ. I got one, but it's finally got too many issues to be worth keeping. They don't tell you about the gasket issues and unless you got a unicorn like I did you'll be paying for that $1400 repair sooner than later.
I'd also trust a 4Runner from that era with 200k+ miles. Not sure I'd trust a WJ the same. I was a Jeep nut in high school so once I got out of my 90s Ford Explorer I immediately went for a Jeep. I would agree they're probably more affordable than 4Runners, but I am not so sure they're as well maintained as Toyota owners have kept theirs in my experience.
You mentioned the lack of vents in the back. Yeah, I tend to have to roll the windows down (if they work) if I have more than myself and a single passenger. However, it's a 2000s SUV so it lacks the 10s and 20s conveniences.

I grew up in foster homes and I thought I had it rough. at least I had a bathroom.
I had one of these. Grand Cherokee overland, brand new in 2002. I loved it as it drove well and it had great off road ability however it also spent a lot of time at the dealership for repairs after which it then it became a maintenance nightmare. I eventually traded it for $1500 on a Suzuki Grand Vitara which has been absolutely problem free. I will never buy another jeep. Sorry but I have to give my honest experience to the viewers.
