Has a lot of Original Star Trek series connections here. Writers Ralph Salinsky and DC Fontana wrote for the Waltons tv show as they did for episodes of the Original Star Trek series to. Some actors such as Cecilia Lovasky, Morgan Woodward were on the show just as they were in the Original Star Trek series. I can name more, however, you get my drift.

Also, in 1957-- on Nov. 22nd-- my parents were married. Six years later, the country witnessed the death of President Kennedy. These 2 events, as part of Waltons' episodes and movies are part of my family every year as people remember and although I was too young or not born at the time of these events I cannot forget them. Judy A Day of Infamy, reminded me when I was onboard the USS Constellation CV-64, we were on our way home after our 6 month deployment, we left Pearl Harbor, on our way back to our homeport Coronado Naval Base in San Diego, when we got the news of the 9/11 attacks in New York, and the Pentagon. Crew members, myself included were watching the news on site TV, not believing what we were seeing. We didn't know if we were to reverse course going back to the Gulf, or heading back home. We were ordered to go home, our Captain had the ship go at flank speed, and we were home in 4 days. San Diego was literally a ghost town when we got back, it has never been the same ever since.

Years from now after all of us here are long gone - I hope that people will see The Walton's as a historical perspective of how a small community (and nearly every community in that time period) came together in support, cried together at a loss of (and thankfulness for the sparing of a life), and loved one another. For me, it does a body good to see people rally around each other- good folks with not much else in life but to support each other and live the best way that they knew how. Well done, Judy.
I think that scene of the family listening to the news of the attack on Pearl Harbor is one of the most powerful scenes ever filmed for television.
How many times that scene must have been played out all across the United States.
And that historical event is still within living memory.
PS Even though technology wasn't as advanced as it is today, think of how it must have been for Zeb and Esther to have experienced the phenomenon of radio, a phenomenon by which the president was able to speak to Americans, all over the country, at the same time--as if he were right there with them, in their living room. This kind of thing was unprecedented for people the age of Grandpa and Grandma, considering when they were children, and when they experienced young adulthood.

If you want to read something quick and unique re Pearl Harbor, pick up a little book entitled, "The Children of Battleship Row."
I'm a WWII history buff for over 50 yrs and have served, read about battles, wargames, know all the movies back and front...but this little book I stumbled across really touched me. It was written by a 70-yr old woman in 2000 about she and small family living on tiny Ford Island during the actual 12/7 attack...250 yds from anchored USS Tennessee! Though she wrote it finally at 70 (said she couldn't bring herself to write it earlier), it was based on her experiences when she was 9-10! They lived there for about a year before attack due to dad being USMC Maj in charge of 300-man, Ford Island security detail. I actually found this woman and spoke to her by phone in 2012, and found one of her daughters living in my small town in Mississippi (pop 25k)! Book less than 150 pp and some of it after she, sister and mom had to relocate to SF, while dad stayed behind.

Re: the Hindenburg episode - one small thing that how accurate the research. When John Boy returns after the tragedy one of his brothers tells him that they heard it over the Blue Network. That is spot on. NBC had two networks, Red and Blue. The latter was sold and is now ABC. The network’s Chicago affiliate WLS sent announcer Herb Morrison and engineer Charles Nehlsen to Lakehurst to make an archive recording of the arrival. They had to keep a low profile in order to get the recording back without it being confiscated. The record was played next day over the entire network. It’s generally considered to have been the first time a news story was broadcast via electrical transcription over a nationwide radio network.

Judy, just watched this episode today on the 79th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. My grandparents came of age during the depression and war years. Watching The Waltons now isca connection to my grandparents. I've gained a new appreciation for the show this year. Curt's letter is not about one family but all of our families and it resonates today during this difficult time. Love and respect from Oregon.

still love watching the Waltons every day here in Canada! When Judy mentioned the Burnout and how the family felt knowing their loved ones were still in the fire - my family actually lived through similar. My Grandparents home burned down back in the 50s . One of my Aunts (age 12 at the time) ran into the fire to try and save her baby brother. Sadly , the baby did not survive and Aunt was severely burned. She was so young and so brave.

Day of Infamy is one of the most authentic and moving Walton's episodes; relatable to many families' WWII history. Thanks for sharing your behind the scenes insights, Judy. Especially during these difficult times, The Walton's reminds us of our beloved United States of America. Bless you.

I always cry watching this one. My mom and I watch this as part of our "cry me a river matinee" when we just want to cry. Thank you for being a part of this show. You guys, Little House on the Prairie and Dr. Quinn were my history lessons because until college I did not learn anything in history beyond the Civil War. So of course there is a lot of fiction in all three shows, but when I finally took a history class that covered the reconstruction until now I remembered facts, names and places by connecting it to the shows from when you used actual events from history 😂😊😊

The part where Grandma hands Curt’s letter to Mary Ellen makes me cry every time I see it. The look you and Ellen exchange is heartbreaking, I think because Grandma had lost a son (John’s brother Ben) in World War I, and knows that Mary Ellen just lost her husband the same way, and knows what she’s about to go through.

No, I've been fortunate to almost never take my work home - at least emotionally. I had to take the work home in terms of preparing for the next days work - but that's pretty much it. It was always great to step out of the heavy emotion, laugh, smile take a deep breath and enjoy my off time.

When you shot this episode many family members of the fallen were still alive. Had the internet been available & you this accessible, I'm confident you would have received an overwhelming number of positive responses from those impacted when this aired. Your heart wrenching portrayal must have resonated deeply with them. Sadly, most are now gone. But their spirit will live through you forever each time this episode airs.

My question is, for the older actors like Ellen, Michael, Ralph who might have experienced these actual historical events. Did any of them ever talk to the children actors and explain what the feeling was actually like during that time period? Thank You

Very heartfelt reflections on Day Of Infamy. A +. Filmed so many years ago, today the tecnicals of filming take a backseat to you being able to watch as a fan and be moved by the story every time. Impossible to deny that history comes alive for us as viewed up close by our friends, the Waltons. So much more real than it ever was before... Curt's letter to John Curtis were he spoke of the wonderful family he will have surrounding him as he grows up ("Your grandparents, John and Olivia old but forever young will be there for you to understand all that you feel") was interesting in that while he clearly liked them, he resented the family for Mary Ellen being so tied to them. With his letter he shows the true grasp he did have on the entire clan. How he appreciated and respected them. A sobering episode.

Our family gathered around the tv whenever The Waltons aired. My mother was 12 when Pearl Harbor occurred. Sunday morning on their way out the house to church, the news flash came over their radio. Much like The Waltons, my mothers family gathered around their radio listening to the news. Listening to my mother recall that morning truly resembled that episode. Judy I’m crying thinking about that story. Job well done! Thank you for posting these videos. God Bless you!

Thank you Judy, for sharing this episodes "behind the scenes". People who weren't there during that time, and only recalling old stories told, never knew the personal impact something that that had. My father was in the Navy at that time, and he told us.."I hope you never have to go through something like we did." Now, this generation has gone through it. I recall where I was on 9/11, just as I heard my relatives said. Thank you for bringing the raw emotion of that tragic history to your character. You did very very well lady.

When The Waltons first premiered in 1972, my mother, perhaps inspired by the network publicity ads for the show, told me "Sit down and watch this. You'll like it." So I watched the first episode about the deaf girl and Elizabeth locked in the trunk. For the next nine years I tried to never miss an episode!
