  • Day 3 of my Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore through hike, walking from Mosquito group site to the Coves campsite.
This was a day of one beautiful view after another. Because it was the third day of the Pictured Rocks backpacking trip, the food weight in my pack was getting lighter. So even though our mileage was getting longer, the lighter backpacks made it easier hiking.
Pictured Rocks is named for its stunning rock formations, and it didn't disappoint. The trail wound around the edge of the cliffs, offering amazing views throughout the day.
We had a lunch break at Chapel Beach where it was warm enough - in SEPTEMBER - to swim in Lake Superior. Okay, I didn't swim, but some people did. Not warm enough for me:)
We ended our day at Coves group site. We walked to a cliff to watch the sunset (through trees, not a great view but still lovely) then back to the campsite where we had a fire in the fire pit.
Watch the video to see the 'ghosts of toilets past'!
I'm backpacking with a group of friends, doing the entire trail through the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (known as the U.P.). We start at Munising Falls Visitor Center and spend 6 days hiking the 42-ish miles to Grand Sable Visitor Center.
