This is the first positive message I’ve ever heard on sex. I’ve always struggled with sexual issues. I did the men’s groups at church to keep me accountable but it never worked. I was extremely impulsive and lived in shame. Then in my mid 40’s I was finally diagnosed with bipolar disorder, got treatment and took control of my life. Now, no problems for 5 years. Those people never looked at what the problem was but consistently berated me for my “failure “ to live up to their standards. I no longer participate in such groups and am true to myself and have never been better!

@@HusbandMaterial The false promises. They form this narrative in purity culture:
-before marriage, you shouldn't even think about sex
-then you get married and you will immediately have a mind-blowing perfectly fulfilling sex-life (even though very few things in life are perfectly fulfilling)
I grew up in a liberal church in Europe and wasn't really taught this, but somehow I still pictured this was how it worked. First started to realize this after reading the book 'Pure' from Linda Kay Klein on women's experiences of purity culture. Really recommend it by the way.

As someone who's struggled with this, I believe it was started and propogated by people who wanted young adults to be as miserable and repressed as they are. It worked.

      It's so, so sad.

I genuinely believe the messages were taught from a place of good intentions, with a few exceptions of course. The effects, however, speak for themselves. So much damage.

I do not believe for one damn second that the people preaching this had good intentions. Sex is a good beautiful thing. Yes, it is intended for marriage and outside of it is damaging, but there is ALWAYS healing for those who sin sexually. And there is always hope that you can leave it behind and heal from it.

As a Christian one day you may not get married, people exposed to this purity message better hear that loud and clear and early.

I'm with you Drew on the purity culture. My one question would be on Military Mindset. I get that if that's your only mindset you are essentially trying to white knuckle your way to freedom. But there seems to me to be a lot of verb-age in the Scripture that affirms and uses military analogies for our struggles against sin. Colossians 3:5 is the one that immediately comes to my mind. “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” To me it would be part of the recovery program to have a mindset of daily spiritual battle against desires of the flesh. But you've really landed on turning our focus towards the beauty of God's design for sexuality, as opposed to the purity cultures view of sex as dirty. Great vid.

Hey Jason. Thanks for watching. In regards to the military mindset, I believe spiritual warfare is real and we do need to fight...not against sexuality but FOR the sake of sexuality. What frustrates me is that so many ministries over-emphasize making war and fighting and killing to the neglect of resurrecting true life, healthy intimacy, holy pleasure, and creativity as image bearers of God. Death without resurrection is not the gospel.

I have come to believe that as Christians were made PURE by the blood of Christ. It’s a matter of whether or not you believe that this new found purity extends to your sexuality.

Yooo! Thank you for this! This was actually super counter-cultural and insightful. I think Purity Culture was crated in response to Pornography and perversion, and in my opinion, is a very unstable foundation to preach truth from. It’s contingent upon compensating for all the evil in the world rather than addressing the heart to better understand why it’s bent towards certain things! Thanks for sharing! You have my supscription!
