Wow! Kia Sportage 3 (SL) from 2012 driver here. I've got this replaced some years ago while it was still in warranty, but it went bad again. I've "solved" it before with compressed air or contact spray, but it always came back worse and worse. For me it was the worst with the volume up switch. My Belgian Kia only has one T20 screw in the back on each side, so I had to get the steering wheel completely out to dismount the button modules. After prying these plastic modules open, I followed your guide and WOW, it's working great! Tnx a lot for this very excellent and well explained video and for your time!
Got to be my best 'TH-cam' fix yet. have a 2013 Kia Cee'd (UK) with the same switches and symptoms. Not exactly the same as the one in the video but close enough. Anyway took my time and 3 hours later (wouldn't take that long for someone with experience) works like a dream. And like you say didn't cost anything. Many thanks.
OK, just disconnected the negative battery cable and waiting.... On the right set of switches my set button works intermittently. It takes multiple attempts to get it to set. This has been going on for a while now. On the left side, the radio controls are starting to act up. So, time to tear into it. This video is exactly what I needed. Thank you! BTW 2012 Kia Soul! With 118K.
If you don't have an ohmmeter it's not necessary. Just clean everything and see if it works. It would be good to clean the other switches too before they fail. You got this.
@@HousesandCars All back together. Drivers side, everything works, better than before. Passenger side, can't set the cruise at all now. However, I have a tire that is low and the TPS light is illuminated on the dash. So, I am going to assume that is the reason. ;) Rolling out the compressor now.
Success!!!! The down on the left side is the only thing not working and I am OK with that. Thanks again. Couple things of note that might help the next guy.... The T-40 bolts have a collar around them that will not let you use a T-40 socket adapter. I used a 6mm Allen wrench. They do not come all the way out of the steering wheel. I used a magnet to ensure they were clear of the airbag. The little metal piece in the buttons is tiny. My 50 year old eyes were working overtime because I couldn't find my cheaters. And they love to jump out of the tweezers, so have a clean and clear work area. Lastly, a trick I use to separate the buttons from the housing is to fold small pieces of an index card in half. Pull each tab away from the clip gently and slid the folded piece of paper between them. This keeps them from re-engaging when you move to the next one.
Good video. Completed switch swap today. One note: I wasted about an hour trying to remove the T40 torx bolts until I realized they are the capture type and are not removable. Doh!
I began working on a 2018 model and those are completely different. When I made the video I didn't realize how limited the design was for the 2012 model. Did you get it fixed?
@@HousesandCars One other difference to note. My 2012 had an additional ground wire (part of the white harness attached to the clock spring) that clipped to the steering wheel. The job, she be finis! your video a big help.
Thank you so much for making this video! Pretty sure this is exactly the issue with our 2011 forte. Over time the set button has just kinda stopped working. Likely just got some crap in the contacts. Will pull it apart this weekend and see. Much appreciated, for sure! Had no idea how to take this apart, I'm sure this'll save me a ton of time
The resistance values might be different for that year but you still have a good idea of what could be wrong and how to fix it. Good luck on the repair
Thanks for making this video. I've got a 2010 Forte and the cruise doesn't work. Might give this video another watch when I'm ready to try your method!!
thank you the best video I have seen about it, where did you get the wire diagram (resistors diagram)?, mine its a suzuki where 3 control buttons do se same function, i was searching why and I measured voltage when I push every buttos and those 3 buttons have the same voltage about 0.6 (very low), I thought thay maybe a resistor is damage so I checked and measuring resistance of every resistor but non is in short circuit or open circuit.
You're welcome! I just Google it and that's what showed up fortunately. I got lucky. It does sound fishy about the voltage but it depends on how the voltage is used in the circuit and how it's measured. It sounds like you're experienced but it might be better to ignore the values of the voltage and resistance. I should have mentioned that in the video... especially for people who don't have a meter. So if you suspect the buttons or connections, clean everything as I did and try the circuit again. If it doesn't work, maybe try to do a continuity check of the clock spring wires. Let me know how it goes👍
Thanks Stephen. I believe the wheel needs to be removed. On a good note... you probably don't need a multimeter if you don't have one. Just clean it if you suspect it to be bad. Good luck
Excellent TH-cam clip. I have the same car in Australia (Cerato) with the same cruise control switch. Problem initially was the cruise function was turning on but when pressing set it was not setting. I replaced the brake switch with another one that was proven to be working. It didn't fix the problem. A few months later the cruise function would not turn on at all. Subsequently found your clip and tested the ohms with multi meter. According to the results all the switches are working but Cruise control will still not turn on. Does anyone have any suggestions. Clock spring maybe? Is there a way of testing that? Anything else?
If you have the steering wheel apart, I would clean every switch eventhough the ohms read good. The ohms tests were meant to be a confirmation instead of a diagnosis. Remember I had the same problem but my meter was sometimes reading ok. So I would clean the switches and go from there. I believe the clockspring is just a spool of wires. You could do an ohm test on that also and it should be a short (0 ohms) from one side to the other. 👍
Cleaned every switch, no luck. Replaced switch with used one from a wrecker, no luck. Checked continuity in clock spring, two points not working. Replaced clock spring with aftermarket brand BAPMIC. Problem solved. Strange though that after I installed the replacement clock spring I tested the old one and there was continuity on all points.
@@frank2247 Good job. When everything works again it's like a miracle especially when you did it yourself. I wish I mentioned the clock spring in the video.
Yes and no. Cleaning the switches can be done on any car but the steering wheel might have different hardware and the resistors might be different in the circuit. I would ignore the resistor values and clean everything and see if it works. 👍 good luck
$50 for a used part on ebay... not to have it fixed. Keep in mind I made it more difficult than it looks with the meter. If you don't have a meter you can clean all the switches in almost the same amount of time.

Because you removed the airbag, will it produce a code that has to be cleared?
Nope not at all. If you remove the battery before working on the car, the car will never know the airbag was missing. 👍
Thats quite a lot of money saved ... thanks
That's true. Also you don't need need a multimeter to complete the task. You can clean all the switches and put it back in.
