He's not curating, just commenting. LOVE these works. Stunning, energetic, emotional. She was one of the great abstract expressionists. Thanks for filming.
de Hugo, I'm sure yours isn't too much smaller than anyone else's. Many men pick on women because of their unowned feelings of inadequacy. You are not alone.
de Hugo, extraordinary that you are such a coward that you privately message me menacing, bigoted, and taunting remarks but don't have the raisins to post them here. Especially since it is you who posted the coded sexist remark. Extraordinary that you profess knowledge of abstract expressionism yet make such pathetic comments; equally extraordinary that these are the titles of 3 of the 4 videos you have posted here: " UFO Secret War PART 2; "David Icke, UFO Secret War; "David Icke Reptilians Will Attack." Paranoid much? Poor feller.
***** OK, everyone is entitled to their opinion but your assertion that she is not one of the great abstract expressionists is flat-out incorrect. There are a few reasons why this is: technical mastery of the stroke, technical mastery of color and abstract composition, scale of the works, individuality of expression (there are no paintings quite like these by any artist) and dedication to the genre over a 40+ year period. Just because you don't like the art, doesn't mean it's not great.
Joan Mitchell's paintings - gorgeous!!! Just discovered your channel a few days ago. Thankyou from "The Great White North" for your glimpses into the New York art scene.
Yet another informative tour around New York galleries with James. On this side of the POND I could never get to see them; only through his lens, am I enabled to do so . Thanks.
I agree, this man was pretty good and may go down in history. I'm sure he's glad to get a chance to show his stuff here. New guys coming up all the time! I don't really care for those TonToe things.
I think we have to remember that Joan Mitchell lived in France for many years lending itself to a very European sensibility to abstraction. Her 25 year relationship to the most underrated abstract painter Jean Paul Riopelle was so evident in both their work . go to Quebec City and see the monumental work by Riopelle that comprises 30 paintings in a cycle that was a hommage to Joan Mitchell and his love for her. Despite she was often drunk, chain smoking who threw plates and bottles.
There must be a group of influential people in NYC who believe this type of painting is great art. But, really, could one find joy in any of these, every day, if it was hanging in your residence? Contrast that to De Kooning or Rothko.....the paintings of either would be a constant aesthetic pleasure. Much of the passages in Mrs Mitchell's paintings look like used palettes, so I am not impressed with those at all, but there are other passages which are lyrical and I appreciate them as beautiful. Still, I don't think they will hold up in the history of art, except as a footnote.
There should be a correction here. These are not the great Joan Mitchell's art, but this was an exhibition of work done by primates at the Cincinnati Zoo.
Thanks for the video. She's one of the very best abstract artists - and such astonishing quality late works.
Never heard of this artist until today. This show looked incredible. Love their use of color and mark in each work.
Incredible! Excellent artist! Thanks, James! Thank you, Kate!

Why are they called "tondos" and not just "circles?"
It's a classic Italian term from the Renaissance, for tondo round, short for rotondo, from Latin rotundus.
Thanks for not including the street musicians.
Delicious

Intrinsic purity of beauty
The Whitney Houston?
Know I have changed my mind my work is closer to pollack
Shaking shaking..
Is the dilettantism on purpose (coquettish), or were those sad aesthetics the result of mere inability? Asking for a friend. ❤

I agree they seem kind of slap dash

Some of these paintings actually suck.
