    Love it Eric. Thanks for sharing! Last time I flew to SF I got amendment routing 4 times as soon as I departed VNY. It becomes so confusing with ATC as they giving you a new amendment and all these weird name fixes :) . But one thing I love about North Cal approach is they always greet you with Welcome! That is something we don't see with SoCal approach! lol

      You get greeted with a warm welcome because they are surprised on two things
      1) you made it and didn’t loose your mind (you’re in the club)
      2) being polite to the ATC even though he basically just Trolled you with vectors means he won the bet they had on you loosing you’re mind and getting irritated and now beer night is taken care of he is all happy

    That airport you pointed to in this video when you were in the Bay Area is KNUQ - formerly known as "NAS Moffett Field" and now known as "Moffett Federal Airfield". That's where I was stationed with the US Navy flying in P-3 Orions, chasing Soviet submarines for a living in the mid 80's and 90's... It's also home to the NASA AIMES Research Center. That's where I met the late General Charles "Chuck" Yeager back in 1989 when he gave our unit a pre-deployment send off. I used to rent aircraft from the Navy Flying Club they had there and flew with my wife all over California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. They had some great aircraft to rent, including a Navy T-34B Mentor. This clip brought back some great memories!
    Fly safe and fly often!

    There is one confusing miscommunication I remember during a practice approach with published miss when I was at 2000: "Maintain 3000 after the approach, heading 185 till establish on localizer, cleared for ILS 17 approach." I read back "maintain 3000 and heading 185 till establish....." and atc didn't even correct me for that. I was glad that my CFII was with me and told me what was going on.

    Recently in my flight training I’ve started getting flight following. I’ve only flown VFR short distances and much of the time in Piper Cubs so I haven’t really used it before, but it’s amazing! Really great help. My third time getting flight following the controller vectored me to an airport nearby the airport I intended to land at because they had similar names and I hadn’t specific via the identifier. Good experience.

    Thank goodness you weren't in IMC for all that spirograph flying!
    On one of my student solo x-country flights the controller asked me something that I couldn't make out after two repetitions so I had to apologise and state that I was a student pilot and could he please repeat it a third time.
    He switched his tone of voice immediately and was super nice, asking me if I had a check ride scheduled yet and how many hours did I have logged.

    I had an altitude bust IFR one time at 5:30AM with nobody else within 100 miles... I was cleared to 11,000ft. Climbing through 11,400ft the controller says "Confirm you are level at 11,000ft?" I said, oh SHIT and descended down really quickly and levelled off and said "Yes, level at 11,000ft." The controller just laughs out loud and says "Roger" lol. So, sometimes they don't get grump if there was no harm done. But, I have also been scolded many times for minor things.

      It was IFR ceilings along our route and IMC up to 10k with freezing level forecast at 8k and then down near 6k. Best to stay low in the clouds out of the cold and not get trapped on top. Probably could have cancelled or asked for a visual on the second attempt. But yeah, when I can go VFR I do. It is a lot faster to depart my home airport that way...which I did in this video and then picked up a clearance.

      Didn’t want to get trapped on top. And forecast cloud tops 10k. If I climbed to 10 and above then I would have to descend through clouds up north where freezing level dropping to almost 6k.

      @@SoCalFlyingMonkey I fly a Saratoga in upstate New York. Maybe others will disagree, but I do draw a distinction between possibly picking up some ice on the descent and picking up ice on the climb. My nightmare is picking up ice in the climb and not making it on top before HAVING to descend. I suspect that in your case you would not have picked up much ice descending though a relatively thin layer of clouds, with warm, clear air below. I would have gotten on top, but not if I would have been in icing conditions on the approach.

    I would bet flying into RHV would have been much less hassle, or PAO that you overflew at 15:00: either is fewer than 10 road miles from SJC and more GA friendly.

    • @SoCalFlyingMonkey
      @SoCalFlyingMonkey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very well could have been. SJC was super close to where we needed to be and had rental car we could pull up to the plane so that was nice. :)

    Thanks. Really relaxed with all the instructions. Can you fly the approach with the autopilot?

    • @SoCalFlyingMonkey
      @SoCalFlyingMonkey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Trutrak autopilot has the capability for fly LPV approaches but it is technically not certified to do so on “coupled instrument procedures”. It cannot follow an analogue ILS but you’re can manually dial in the track for it to follow and step down altitudes or program a constant rate descent. I have a full review of all its features on my channel if you are interested.

    It's hard to tell what's really going on when I can't hear the whole ATC audio....but it seems that there are other faster jets they are trying to squeeze you in with. A slow aircraft on final can be a real road block when it's busy and even more so when they want a long final. Many times they will S turn you and allow as many jets to get in front and tuck you in as close as possible to the airport and build a big gap behind you. I guess as a smaller aircraft it stinks....but it sometimes is easier to vector one aircraft all over the sky than have to vector several faster jets all over the sky. Sticking a smaller aircraft into a daisychain when it's busy can be interesting.

    • @SoCalFlyingMonkey
      @SoCalFlyingMonkey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally understandable that we get vectored around since we are slower. Flying into a bigger airport I have come to expect it. I think the controller was in a tough spot with the relative speeds of the 2 aircraft competing for the ILS final approach. If I had recorded the traffic view and not the plate in foreflight it would have helped illustrate it I think and I could have explored that a little more. Not sure he could have vectored us west at all because there are other airport in that direction like SFO...so he tried to get us on to the approach quickly but then had to adjust the intercept angle because the first vector he gave (070) would probably have put us inside the FAF/GS intercept. I would be curious to hear from another controller what his other options were.

    After many years of VFR flying only I decided to get my IPC a few weeks ago. ATC was such a pain in the butt I thought maybe this was a bad idea. They don't make it easier. If anything, they make it worse. They talk so fast you can't understand them, and they insist on vectoring you all over the place. Add to that the massive amount of training aircraft in our area, and all the radio chatter, it made it impossible to brief my approaches for my CFII over the intercom. As I was finishing my last approach, which wasn't the one I had prepped for and requested, we would call them, and get no answer. After a few minutes we thought we'd lost radio com and would have to indent 7600. Don't know if they couldn't hear me or what. Then all of a sudden there they were, "squawk VFR. Frequency change approved."
    Anyway, I think you did a great job of not getting flustered by your experience. Never let them rush you into an uncomfortable situation... Fly the airplane first above all else.

    Great video, Eric! Did you have the auto pilot in Skyview mode and using the heading bug on the Skyview to do all of the vectoring? I noticed you using the knob panel to turn the headings, but using the auto pilot head for altitude, it seemed.

    • @SoCalFlyingMonkey
      @SoCalFlyingMonkey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey jesse, I actually still had it in Track mode and just mentally calculated a little wind correction angle between the heading I was given and a track number to dial in. Once in awhile after it settled on the track I would adjust it a degree or two based on what the HDX was showing as the heading. Works pretty well. I should try to use the selector switch and go into the Skyview mode more for vectoring. I honestly pretty much never do it. Good to know its there though! So when are we installing the Dynon Autopilot in my 6????? I have to imagine they are close to ceritfication.....

    • @jessesaint6641
      @jessesaint6641 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, COVID has slowed down the certification process, so they are moving forward, but slowly. I’m seeing some rest similarities to the PA32 in the Seneca we are currently installing, so the development process should be fairly quick, but they still have the A36, 182 and Mooney’s in development before the PA32. If it comes in 2021, it will be late in the year.

      I cover this in my video on the PMA450B audio panel review (if you want the deep dive details). The audio panel streams bluetooth audio to an iPad mini and I record the audio on that device and sync it in post-production. I also do a bunch of post work on all the audio to make it sound a little better.

    was flying into a controlled field and on my initial call told the tower i was "inbound for a touch and go" and was later cleared "to land" on final I realized what he said an remembered i wanted to do a touch and go and asked if i was cleared for a touch and go and he said "well if you didn't ask for that before, do you want it now?" I just said never mind and did the taxi back.
