Are we counting making the holiday meal for everyone? Because buying and making the main holiday meals has been my go to gift for my family for several years. My mom doesn’t bake much, so offering a steamed pudding and a cake for my dad is possibly the highlight of his holiday.

The older I get the more I love foods and snacks as gifts. I use to think food gift baskets were for business associates or the elderly only. Now, I think they are such a great idea. Does that mean I am aging myself or does it mean that because the prices of food are so expensive that we respect food gifts more? 🙃 Enjoyed this video!

In college, being poor students, we pooled our money and made the Tang tea/Russian tea that was popular in the 70s. There are recipes online. We got baby jars from friends/teachers who had babies, cleaned them and decorated with pretty ribbons and papers. Worked out well and tasted great!

Every year my grandmother would make cookies for her entire family. Which was no less than 50 people. Her base recipe was better homes and gardens chocolate chippers. (Few family favorite add ins, recipe increased by 6, use butter not shortening…that sorta thing) she also made their sugar cookies. When I say rooms were filled with stacked tins I’m not exaggerating. She made them to send to family, and so she had them to be eaten Christmas Day when everyone would come over, plus she made extra tins so if you showed up and she didn’t have a gift for you, you got cookies. It’s become my favorite Christmas memory and tradition.I hand them out still for her with my Christmas cards, and still choose that as my Christmas dessert every year.

I showed my mom the video and she was absolutely excited. She got this cookbook as a gift from her bank back in the day. She has made a ton of recipes out of it including the malted mint mix and the granola. She is a librarian and runs a cookbook club but they love to check out cooking channels on TH-cam so she may just show your channel off sometime soon!
That granola recipe is a family standby. I squealed out loud like a fan girl when you decided to make it! We switch up the fruit a lot of the time and I like it with dried apple, peaches, pears, or pineapples and currants or mixed raisins (and sometimes crushed banana chips too as a treat as well). Honestly, I adore it with the apricots and raisins as written the best of all the combos. The toasted wheat germ, coconut, sesame seed blend is pure heaven for me and the smell of the honey as it bakes is intoxicating. It totally takes me back to being a kid and shopping at teeny local NorCal health food stores and hits me right in the nostalgia. Thanks for trying out this cookbook!!

Hi, just wanted to drop a note to say how much I genuinely enjoy your content. I am a collector (and cooker-outer?) of older cookbooks as well (I love seeing how homemaking and cookery has evolved over the years) and it's the nicest thing to find that someone shares your hobby even if you'll never meet. I loved this episode; consumable gifts are so underrated and I think it is so fun and sweet to receive something that someone has taken the time to make! You have such a gentle, genuine energy and I appreciate your creativity. Thank you for sharing with us!

Thank you for the video! I will have to check to see if I have this cookbook. A colleague friend of mine gifted me with a BUNCH of these old cookbooks. Some had handwritten recipes in them. Others had cutout news paper recipes from the 60s. I find that I always seem to be collecting cookbooks, both new and old/gently-used. I simply love to sit curled up with my coffee and read through them.
I can say that my Mom has worn out her Betty Crocker and Better Homes & Gardens recipe books, but she has made many of the cakes and candies for Christmas for the family and friends. I think her favorites were the Southern Living cookbooks. So many good meals and memories came from those books.
Your channel has been a delight to watch as I am doing my own Christmas cooking and baking. Thank you again so much! Take care, be safe and warm, AND Merry Christmas! 😊💖🙏
PS: The Chex mix recipes are my favorite and are what I am making. I love the sweet & salty recipes, as well as the savory ones. The same friend recently gifted me with a vintage 1984 Chex mix tin. I'll keep my personal stash in that. 😉

I make Monster Cookies for gifts! Everyone seems to like them, the recipe makes 13 dozen cookies, and they freeze really well. It’s one of those recipes that’s in just about every church or group cookbook. One year I didn’t make them, and everyone was sooo sad, so I ended up making a “late” batch. They all got their cookies. 😊

Love making food gifts! I do chocolate type things for neighbors, do spice mixes for family and even done an herb rice mix. I adore butter mints so that mix might be for me. Tip on making mustard, vinegar stops the mustard from becoming hot. So often recipes will have you add the vinegar at the end. Chinese-style mustard is only powder and water and that is why it's hot.

For the hot cocoa mix, if you didn't have a blender, or you don't want to use one, for whatever reason, I think you could crush up the butter mints by putting them in a plastic freezer bag and hitting them with a hammer or rolling a rolling pin on them. If you do that, you want to cover the plastic bag with a dish towel to keep the bag from getting a hole in it as quickly. Turn it over several times and try not to always hit it in the same spot. It helps if you have it up against something hard. A granite counter top would work, but be careful not to damage it, of course. I think it might actually grind finer this way than it would with the blender, since blenders are meant for liquid.

This book looks so cute and I absolutely love to make homemade food gifts for people during the holidays. Even if I am going to give someone a gift card, I usually also give them a food gift that I make homemade. Every year I give Christmas cookies to my neighbors, co-workers, and the various delivery people in my life, but I also make homemade candies too. The homemade treat that people most often ask me for is English toffee. English toffee is my Mom's favorite candy, so I made sure to develop a recipe that is especially good so that I can make it for her all the time.

Do people still use wheat germ? We had a half empty jar of that stuff in our fridge for maybe 10 years back in the 70s and 80s. I have no idea why anyone bought it, what it was used for, or why it wasn't thrown out. I tried it once and it was a grossly unpleasant experience. My advice, don't make food gifts too pretty, people will be loathe to use it because it's just so nice! Yes, I am including myself in that. :)

The granola recipe is very similar to one my mom made when I was a kid. Toasting oats, coconut, almond slivers, sesame seeds, and wheat germ, that's been coated with honey, is the best smell ever. My mom's didn't have the sunflower seeds or fruit. Do you have any more granola recipes? She swears all my favorite recipes are in her stuff somewhere, but she hasn't been able to find a few of my all time favs like this one. My mom was a big Better Homes fan so I wouldn't be surprised if hers came from someone's BH&G cookbook. This stuff on cereal, yogurt, ice cream... so good!

Just like a very familiar song states, these were literally brown paper packages tied up with cotton string! She would then take a sponge and wet the string so it would tighten up. We would wait with anticipation for the box to arrive from our Grandmother! Always filled with homemade treats like apple butter and divinity.
Thank you for another great video and bringing back some fond memories. Is there a recipe for Russian Tea in that collection? 😊

That granola looks really good! I might have to try it! I made the tropical cheese ball, from your 1981 Philadelphia Cream Cheese cookbook video, for thanksgiving, and it was a great success! My mom loved it, and my grandma even wanted the recipe for a potluck!

I was at a Christmas bazaar and raffle just this morning at church 😊I got some decorations... The mustard sounds really neat. I'm always intrigued by granola but I don't really like hard or super crunchy foods. Maybe you can just mix the nuts and fruits with cornflakes

I want to try all of these! I made homemade mustard once and I tasted it right when it was done and I almost died!! It was soooooo gross!! I didn’t know I was supposed to wait a week before eating it to let it rest and come together!! I was seriously afraid for you tasting yours, I’m glad it went much better than my experience!! 😂😂

This is a very clever video, and timely for upcoming Holidays. I have made and given cookie mix (with instructions) in a decorated Mason jar as well as have given baked good in a decorated boxes. These are good gifts (to give w/ a gift card) for folks who are hard to shop for (I have some fussy friends). But that is the extent of my gift making experience. I love these ideas. The mustard (while unique) looks delicious. I love granola - I’ll likely try that recipe at least. Thank you for sharing the recipes.

omg, the memories you bring back! absolutely loved this book, it's a winner, and I just love your videos, keep up the good work! And back then no one ate foods that were very spicy, hence the boring mustard sauce,

Such a fun video! The drink mix sounds delicious…there’s a tea flavor that’s “butter mint” and it’s divine! I also just got a mint chocolate tea flavor, yum! I’ve gifted tins or boxes of fun teas. 😍

I enjoy your videos and your joy of going through the recipes. I must comment though on the Puppies are Like That book on your shelf. It was my favorite book as a child and just seeing that book makes me smile each time.
