Great video and good explanation. One thing that confused me had to do with a bit of translation confusion. This is how I understand it now and please correct me if I am wrong. In Dutch (and maybe even other languages) we name the tack not by where the wind comes from but where your "sail" is. On what you call a starboard tack in English, looking in the direction you are going, your sail (or kite) is on the left side. In Dutch we would refer to this as "bakboord"(Port) and vice versa. The rules are still the same, of course, but it did confuse me having learned the rules on a sailboat in the Netherlands first.
I hope this comment makes sense and that I have understood it correctly and maybe this could help others that were also a bit confused due to the language differences.

yes it makes sense, its a tricky one of you are coming from sailing as the kite operates in the 3D space. But the rules are basically the same, its just how you remember them... the is no port 'left' in the bottle ;)

One very important rule has been ignored in this video, as a rider on a wave has the right of the way over other kites, and that prevails over someone entering the water, no matter which side the wind is coming. Every kiter should know and respect this to keep safe.

agreed, this doesn't cover wave riding. that is for advanced riders that should now the score!

hey guyss:) i think it be great to update those rules online beacuse the sailing rule from 1900 doesnt work for anything happening in 3D ,we should be careful to not tell the student to go downwind when they dont have right of way because thats how the kiter with priority will land on the other .
Here are the two easy rules that experienced rider go by in the kite spots, that allow hundreds of people to share a tiny spot :
    1) watch where you are going : watch before changing sides
just like on a highway when you switch lanes , you don't have priority when you change direction ,because no one can know when you will do it . So please , before changing side ,just look if someone is flying towards you or preparing to jump , and if there is someone : just let them go and go when they are safe and you too. they will do the same for you!
    2) Look upwind .
you are in the way of anybody upwind of yourself , so if you don't want people to crash on you be aware of what or who is coming to you . Sometimes its just a kite flying with no one attached to it, sometimes ,its a beginner that lost control .
if you stay downwind of everybody all the time though , you are just blocking them .
Because they can't do anything without putting you in danger , at some point ,they will just put you in danger...
you will be amazed how many people can ride in a small spot without any problems like this , and everyone rides much more !
when a duotone video about the actual rules that we use ?:) i made one a while back here
    vimeo.com/150989072
you dont have priority if you are changing tack regardless if you are going left or right ( because we cant have asymetric priority , we all go and ride both ways and jaja) you have to let other riders jump and land before going in their trajectory , they will do the same;p .
upwind rider is in the best position to do anything so even if it is true the upwind rider cant jump on the downwind rider (because it ll be unsafe ) the downwind rider should try his best to not blok the flow .
those rules apply for any type of riding aside for Racing where
the starboard tack rule does apply in though because they don't go in 3 D
if you have some ideas it ll be great to hear them ;p

Great videos, could you please give all the names of the locations, the month when you filmed it (beneath the name of the athletes)? That would be great and helpful…

Last bit confuses me. When coming in from the beach in that situation would be a port tac in the example in the video? So doesn't that contridict the 1st rule?

its all about being safe with obstacles... if you are 'pinching' someone preventing them from leaving the beach, it puts them in danger

The clip and explanation only applies if you are riding heal side... should reference which way the board is leaning to rather than front hand forward...

toe side doesn't change which hand is forward or not...
