I encountered this level twice, and both times had a big black crab where the spiny is, and I could never find the spiny. I had everything else found/caught, it's driving me nuts that the spiny is not showing up.
I agree with you, so in my case I will quickly expand the map and just picked the stage that had two cartilage chunks that's guaranteed for turtle beast and call it a day those from big crabs 😂

Do you have to catch the first two in that order to make the spiny appear instead of the crab?
1/1 = 0 Spined Shellbeast
2/2 = 1 Spined Shellbeast
4/4 = 2...
