    The Italian government says "universal basic income", but actually it isn't. Instead, it is permanent unemployment benefits. People who are affluent won't receive any ubi-money. That makes sense to me.

    • @Mauz1
      @Mauz1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What you're describing is closer to Negative Income Tax than Universal Basic Income. NIT can create a scenario where someone on benefits can get trapped in the system; they would lose benefits when getting a job, which can result in no or little pay increase, so they are less inclined to search for one. Whereas with UBI, you will never lose your benefits so there's immediate personal benefit to finding a job.

      @Ann Linley U.B.I would be every single American receiving enough money to survive, a check every month until they die. It doesn't get taken away when they start making money, everybody would receive it. That's why it's called universal dumbass.
      That way when capitalism starts falling apart, it doesn't take everyone with it. That would incentivize companies to make their jobs both tolerable to work, and worth while to work. Right now, people work two, three, even four jobs, just to cover the needs of one family, that is ineffective and intolerable. Coupled with a high marginal tax rate and free tuition, U.B.I would make it easier for people to become educated, to get better jobs, and to innovate and invent.
      If you're worried about everyone becoming lazy, U.B.I would cover the absolute minimum for decent survival. If someone wanted better than the cheapest apartment possible, cheapest foods, ect. they would get a job. If they want video games, or a car, or any other luxury they will have to work for it.
      In an age of automation this is crucial, jobs are being automated at a pace our system can't handle, we should be in a Jetson's type of world by now, if capitalism hadn't been holding us back. Especially since a lot of innovation today is government funded anyway, Apple got it's I.O.S from government funded programs.
      So unless you want everyone in the next few decades to be homeless, jobless, and without education, which is what will result if circumstances don't change. But, it would never get that far, as soon as the posh richie-rich wannabe's start slipping, they'll jump right on board the proletariat revolution.

      It's unemployment benefits. If you find a job that would be lower that unemployment benefits, than you can get a part of unemployment benefits on top of your wage, fading ubi out the more you earn.

    I don't think women were forced out of the household: they WANTED to get out and work and get some financial independence! Some were forced, sure, but I don't think that's the majority. They found, however, that men were not willing to share the burden of household work, so now are pissed that they're doing the job of two. In that situation, staying home seems a better option to many.

    Hi Professor Wolff, I'm a big fan of your program. I always learn something. My French isn't very good but until recently, I lived in France. I'm no expert, but I think the translation of Gilets Jaunes to English is Yellow Vests, not Yellow Jackets. In my humble opinion, one of the brilliant things about these recent protests was the ease with which an ordinary citizen could demonstrate solidarity; all vehicle owners are required to carry these high visibility yellow vests in their car for emergency purposes. I believe the law requires each car to have two of these vests readily available. Often I see cars where the vests are placed over the seat backs almost like a seat cover. Anyhow I thought this easily accessible symbol was conducive to amplifying their message. Thanks again for your great programs!

    • @flash_flood_area
      @flash_flood_area 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's true they are technically vests, and that is the translation, but in English, "Yellow Jackets" is our common name for the type of wasps who swarm angrily and overwhelm their more powerful foe, en mass.
      So, in English, I think "Yellow Jackets" is a far better name. It instantly calls up a mental image for most English speakers that is very apt.

      @billgordon4423 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@guzz1965 Hi Gunther, Thanks for the reply, but I hope you don't become Americanized. One of the refreshing things I find in France is their willingness to engage. In my opinion, an average American would consider an interesting French exchange as an argument and avoid it. This might be - at least partly - because of the prevalence of firearms here. So people here are less likely to risk an argument. Instead their heads are pointed down to their smart phones.
      Another thing I admire about the French is their unwillingness to put with too much crap. They protest and strike rather than just endure more and more oppression as we we seem to do here. So I'm having a tough time thinking of anything American worth emulating. I love my country, but hate our history of oppression and imperialism. And our political hypocrisy.
      When I was young the right wing would say "America, Love it or Leave it", to which we replied "America, Change it or Lose it". I still feel the same way.
      Best wishes Gunther

If they did, we'd see a flood of willing, quality workers into the industry, less elder abuse, less elder loneliness, families and individuals free to work and to love their family members without the burden of caregiving, greater demand for goods and services by formerly poor who are now middle class, job creation, and greater tax revenue coming in.

    There is an 'undertow' globally so to speak of the majority of society that is disenfranchised with the inequality capitalism is imposing. In my most humble opinion though, being Canadian, in my country an overwhelming majority of Canadians are beyond apathetic. And being so, [they] just accept any and every policy that is mandated Federally and Provincially. Even when those same impositions are in direct conflict with [their] own best interests as a society. There is 'change' in the wind. But that change will take hundreds of years to be noticeable for the masses of society to recognise. And historically, the only factor that has ever brought about a change in a societal context has always been extreme hardship and inequality. Ordinary working people better either brace themselves or get used to a coordinated calculated plan from the elites to sink into despair. That's the way I see [it] anyway. Cheers !

He allowed himself to be flattered into the Liberal leadership by the party elite who were desperate to undo the damage done by the "leaderships" of Ignatieff and Dion. They were successful in the short term, but they were lucky in that the country was sick of Harper. I believe both Justin and the party would have been better served if they had allowed Marc Garneau to become leader (he would have trashed Harper worse than Justin did), and have Justin develop his skills as a senior cabinet minister in a one or two term Garneau government. Justin would then have been in a much better position to both win and to govern. Instead, he took on the job too soon, a mistake I fear both he and the country will pay for dearly.

    u.b.i. and direct democracy eliminates "taxes" and "charities" and pensions/retirement. removes power from corporations/politicians. returns it to "we the people". instantly (once systems built) employs everyone; as politicians/political participants. paid to learn, to parent, to be healthy........we already have a such a system for the rich. but at the expense of the majority. since we already make money out of thin air, the system artificially creates poverty to use as a control system (as opposed to being subject to natural scarcity).

    The Italian budget was rejected by the EU. I think (not certain) Prof Wolff might have discussed that the EU were resistant an Italian budget deficit of over 3%, yet allowed a French one given Macron's ongoing crisis. Now it's rejected. It's so important to understand that anti-EU movements are about so much more than petty xenophobia. There's some resistance to the neoliberal structures of the EU, even if it's not fully articulated.

    Please prof. Wolff do more research before you talk about the current italian government. Yes those measures can look quite good if put in those terms but the reality is really different. This government is disgusting and a marxist can only despise it. I understand that in the USA you're so far gone that having someone that talks about basic income and raising pensions can seem a lot, but that's just propaganda, in reality no concrete gains were made. And they beat up on immigrants all the time, if you criticize Hillary for that you should call the italian government too.

    You could have been mentioning at the beginning of your speech that countries like Germany for instance did not to follow the path into tax cuts too much - in particular in Germany state revenue from income tax is extremely high at present - because the government refused to give the middle class tax cuts - but the competitiveness of the German society is still the high. And this is because of the quality of the jobs the people perform. German employers would not find as skilled people as their own people elsewhere. So they cannot change - and this is not a pitty - but mutual benefit!
    So canada should have been proudly refusing to cut taxes because their people are highly skilled as well.
    Tax cuts to improve competitiveness of cooperations are only good for the loser corporation's - unable to have and maintain to have skilled workforce on a world class level. As simple as that.
    Refusing to give tax cuts to corporations would on the other head mean to put pressure on the corporations to improve their competitiveness in different ways - much better for corporations, society and people on the long run.
    We all do not want to buy old products being produced cheaper we want new products, smart products, representing world-class - produced at home.

    Your analysis of Capitalism is, as always, skewed towards vilification of corporations. What about government? What makes governments so benign? A corporation has a single purpose, to make money. People vote on their success by purchasing their products or services. The corporations don't pay taxes, the consumer does. If the corporation can't make money, they cease to exist. Government only take money, then decide how to distribute it. People only vote according to the influence of persuasion the candidates achieve, then those candidates govern according to their own interest or ambition, serving those who can ensure they remain in power. There is no motivation for government to be efficient, only to retain power. If you want to vilify a system, look at any big government system, there has never been one that didn't deteriorate into one party struggling for power over another.

    Mr. Wolf I like your videos because you explain things clearly so the average person can understand. I have a question for you. Wouldn’t a good capitalist policy be to give corporations a deduction for dividends and put some type of limit on compensation? They want people to bet their retirement on the stock market, but it’s not that stable because of the greed of the 1%.

      @joep6592 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ann Linley I agree 100%. My idea was instead of giving corporations a lower tax rate, why not allow a deduction for dividends. Dividends are taxed twice under our laws which isn’t fair. So under the Joe P way ‘excess compensation’ would not be deductible. I like Warren Buffets style, but my gut feeling is he has information that is not available to normal investors and that is good for him.

    • @joep6592
      @joep6592 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ann Linley It’s not that radical. I think the higher rate is only on income over like 3 million. I don’t remember the exact amount. The rates were way higher in the70’s. We have a huge problem in this country of income inequality which could threaten our democracy. The rich have taken over all 3 branches of our government. If you really believe in equality, then everyone should pay an equal share of the tax bill. That is fair and equitable. If I work two jobs, why am I paying twice as much for the parks, military etc.
    If I take a huge risk and start a business and employ people, why should I be punished to pay for others that don't pay their fair share of taxes. Socialism is all about inequity and theft. Ultimately, it is misery and death.

    I AM a child of an immigrant, my mother had a sponsor to come to this country. I am aware of our growing homeless. Our wages have been stagnant for decades, there are affordable housing shortages all over the US, no healthcare is failing and un-affordable to more and more people. Currently, there is an aim in Congress towards shrinking and bringing down Medicare. Our so called "Progressives" elected into this new Congress, all but 3 of these Progressives, voted FOR Nancy Pelosi (a woman who serves doner's, not the people) and they voted for Pay GO! Hurting more of the poor, middle-class and seniors. I want to know why Richard Wolff is shaming us for not opening our arms to everyone and anyone who wants to come into our country? Does he have any idea how we are supposed to pay for their housing, health care, & education when we are in the place we are at. Should we just say come in, we'll fix our problems later? Just move in we'll feed you, house you, educate you and make sure you and your children are healthy and have a future even though ours is slipping away? Eventually, maybe, our wealthy corporations will pay their fair share. But until then, screw our homeless, our sick, our poor that are hungry and sick. We care more about you than ourselves because we're not sociopaths. Those who do care about their own are sociopaths. We need to care about immigrants before we care about ourselves. Doctors are finally coming out and saying that these inoculations (to date, over 30 shots are required for our children before they enter school) are part of the problem. Oh sure, there must be somethink lacking in my critical thinking skills that I can't see why we should not just open our borders. I'm a terrible person, right? You tell me why our children are required these shots before they start school? Where are these diseases coming from? Does anyone care that so many of them are being diagnosed as Autistic? No, no, all of you good people are so right and I have no reason to think I have any argument at all. I'll work until the day I die, and sadly, death is looking more desirable than this life.
