    I remember seeing this game in the arcade & thought wow look how far graphics have come. My 12 year old self could never imagine what today's gaming would turn out to be.

    This was all about timing in the arcades and had me transfixed as a 10 year old back in late '83 when i first saw it, due to the whole cartoon animation plus sound/fx/music quality. But it was a difficult game to play.
    Great to see all the bits and pieces up here though, so thank you for sharing this.

    This game was mind blowing back then. If you think it's obsolete looking, go look at Space Invaders, then come back. Honestly I think there would be a place for this kind of animation based gaming today. Thanks for helping preserve this!

    This game was all about timing. Do the right thing at the wrong time and you'd still get killed, often quite gruesomely. Unforgiving quarter eater in 1983, especially from nine-year-old me.

      Glad I'm not the only one that lost their hard earned quarters to the game.

    This was a popular game back when they brought it inside the little arcade store next to the supermarket at my town in 1983. There usually was someone playing it with maybe a few watching and waiting to go next. I was one of the observers and whenever it was my turn I died many gruesome deaths. How I learned was watching the other kids and when and how they moved the control stick and how they won it. The hardest part was the dragon at the end because you had to do a lot of moves. But when I finally got all the moves down for every scene I was that guy winning it while others were watching how I did it. next few days I'd go replay it again a number of times just to show off.

    Even after 36 years this game still rocks. But, still impossible to beat. In all this time, I yet to find anyone that had ever won this game.

    A game comprised solely of Quick Time Events. Maybe the laserdisc genre is what led to QTEs in the first place.

    Sometimes, you gotta wonder how all of this was even possible in the 1980s. Imagine how much resources were required to pull something like this, especially when most computer games were usually 8-bit one-color sprites around this time.

    • @satellaguy
      @satellaguy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      LaserDiscs allowed for you to send stuff to the LaserDisc Player to go to a specific frame of the LaserDisc. Advanced Microcomputer Systems (Later known for Thayers Quest and also renamed to RDI Video Systems) programmed the game so it used the frame system and arcade game code at the same time for score and credit and lives.

  • @oldclassicgame
    @oldclassicgame  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @rickyarte
    Yes, you need mpeg files (full ripped files of the original laser disc) and the roms to play the game.

  • @oldclassicgame
    @oldclassicgame  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @rickyarte
    mpeg files are the laserdisc image files which are exact copies of the original laserdisc. The emulator recognizes those files as laserdiscs. The roms are exact copies of the arcade hardware with rom chips used in the arcade machine. Just put the roms in the roms folder and the mpeg files in the mpeg/laserdisc folder. When you start the emulator, go to configuration and set the location where it can find the emulator can find the mpeg files. That's it. I hope you understand now.

    How about completing all the levels the right way, instead of using unlimited lives to get to the final scene. Some of those scenes Dirk died in are very, very easy to do. And if done right, you can easy rack up over 300,000 points in one playthrough. I was a master at this back in 1985.

  • @AmbersKnight
    @AmbersKnight 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    One of the greatest con tricks in history. The trailer promises you action and adventure and that you control your character. Technically true but not really. All it amounted to was a scene would appear and you had to decide with perfect timing which of the four directions and/or fire button to press at a precise moment. make the wrong move, or make the right move too early or too late and you died.
    Game looked gorgeous and is fantastic to actually look at and the music helps but the game is just not there. it is at best a barely interactive movie.

    • @neneshubby
      @neneshubby 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ronnie Bradley That may be but I was a teenager working at an amusement park when this game came out and it always had a line waiting to play it. Of course now the graphics are outdated as well as the theme.

      I have to tell ya, I am 50 years old and still love this game. I was in my teens when it came out and I would always look for it in a game room. I was horrible at it, but loved it. Also consider that the games we played back then had simple graphics. To see a game that used hand drawn animation and gave you some control in game play was advanced for its time.

    • @FUGP72

      Not at best...it WAS an interactive movie. So, what is wrong with that? It was a shitload better than any other laserdisc game that came out after it, other than Space Ace. Those were just even LESS primitive version of 2-3 year old games but when unnecessary, cheesy graphics in the background.

  • @knuclear200x
    @knuclear200x 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @rickyarte They released Dragon's Lair for the DS as well. The graphics aren't as clear but it does give you a lot of options like unlimited lives, a move guide on the bottom screen and difficulty settings.

    No, you don't need the original laserdisc. It's not needed but highly recommended if you already own it and for the best video quality. Just go online and search and download the laserdisc image files (mpeg files). and the roms. You'll be to run the game with those 2 files. It's needed that's all. It should not be that difficult . Then go on youtube or online and look up Daphne emulator tutorial to help you get started and how to set it up. It should be easy then.

  • @oldclassicgame

    I've asked this everywhere and no one know what I'm talking about.
    I'm really starting to think I imagined this game.
    I played it once and all I remember is the opening scene which I didn't get past.
    The player is crusing on a skateboard and a woman appears. She was on a roof or maybe flying. She hits the player with some type of magic or maybe a raygun of some sort and it turns you into a monkey and you lose.
    Does this sound at all familiar to anyone? I know it's barely anything to go on but I only saw it and played it once around 85 or so.

      RocketMan Have you looked a the settings on daphne emulator? There should be a
      setting that allows you to do this. If you start up the game, have you
      press like F2 or F3 to go to the dipswitch settings. It might have it
      there. Try those instructions and see. If it does not solve the problem,
      then you can go to daphne-emu.com and contact the developer or support with your questions via forums or the chat room.

      Alternatively, when you start daphne, before starting the game, do you see a configure button? Click on that and it may have a setting that allows you to disable the text on the screen. I have not tested it yet. If it does not solve the problem, then you can go to daphne-emu.com and contact the developer or support with your questions via forums or the chat room.
