Just an idea I had. The music Trent and Atticus produce is so mechanical and so well-timed it calls to me to be looped, edited, and de-gapped. I regularly make one-hour versions of NIN songs when I get bored.
The gapped version sounds like the menu screen of an old videogame that has a track looping with a delay. The gapless version feels like you're peering out of a spaceship window, watching the earth get smaller as you accelerate away from it, hearing the final transmission become increasingly distorted.
It feels comfortable listening to it without the gap, I don't like that. The gap gave it a sensation of anxiety which seems Reznor was probably going for. It feels a bit numb without it.
There are times that I can listen to one over the other. I've honestly heard this version so many times now from editing it down that I'm back to listening to the original. That is the way it was meant to be heard, so I should remain loyal to it.
It's not that I didn't like it. Far from it. I just wanted to experiment with the track to see what it sounded like without it and was pleasantly surprised by the result. Fans aren't allowed to speak on the artist's behalf when he himself has suggested they take his music and make it their own.
Agreed, but it seems to me that you have to be apart of that culture to really appreciate the design of the song. Going all the way back to industrial roots, something that was clearly a huge inspiration for Reznor, I wouldn't be surprised that half of his fan base wouldn't take a second listen to anything like Throbbing Gristle lol. Which I get it I guess lol to each their own haha. I think he does well by making music for himself and for his fans, spanning different interests from people who actually enjoy the long ended grindy industrial instrumental fuck fest to just the good rhythm hook based pop tracks.

Realistically if you bought the album and own the track you should be able to do as you wish with it, as long as your not making a profit off of it, within the capacity of what you did to the track. Thanks. I couldn't get it out of my head what it may sound like, so I decided to share it after removing all 52 gaps. Wasn't that hard with an old WAV editor from 2001 called Acoustica. I bought it for ten bucks and it still does me well to this day.
I’m only now finding this edit and I can say that, while this one just feels like it’s flowing, like a river stream that leads to a larger body of water at the end, the original feels like a river too but with a waterfall by the end of its stream, which is also another stream and just continues until the same thing happens, it leads to somewhere. Basically, the original feels like you’re struck with realization at the end of each loop, while this one, just degenerates progressively and almost unnoticeably until you pick up the “scratchiness” of the loop.
Now that more than two months have passed, listening to this version for anyone who is familiar with the original will cause a slight jarring of the psyche. It was meant for anyone who heard the track within the first few days of its release and was wondering, just as I was, if the gaps were purposeful or accidental and what the loops would sound like without them.
I can't stand Piet Mondrian. I think his work is shit. All it is are lines and colored boxes. It's stupid. However, he's famous for it. I understand that. Shawn is saying he understands why Trent does this sort of thing. That doesn't mean he always has to force himself to listen to it. I believe when Trent designs a track with the mindset of "this will make the listener feel uneasy and anxious", he's basically saying, "anyone who listens to this and truly enjoys it is fucked in the head".

Just a fun fact for those of you who might not know, the loop at the end is extended by the original gap to exactly nine seconds and repeats 52 times (Trent was 52 when this was released). Removing the gaps kinda feels like painting makeup on the Mona Lisa, but I have to agree that it’s easier to listen to.
At the risk of aggravating the fans I will say that it is not better, but offers an alternate ending that many audiences may find more comforting. Kind of like when test audiences didn't like the original ending of Army of Darkness, so Sam Raimi decided to go with a silly store shootout instead of a post-apocalyptic future. Yes, I just compared Trent Reznor to Sam Raimi... except Trent did not give in to audience pressure and I did.
Literally my pleasure. Making minor tweaks to Trent and Atticus' work over the years had been a way to fill the gaps myself (where idle time is concerned). I use a very, very simple wav editor called "Acoustica" I picked up about 12 years ago and have never updated. No filters, no volumization, and no pitch or tempo changes. Just snip-snip, copy-copy, paste-paste.
Very interesting. I've gotten so used to the gap the seamless version almost seems just as jarring at first. I've played around with that last 7 minutes or so myself, but I like what you did here.
The loop is repeated 52 times. Exactly Trent‘s age in years when this track was Release. Immediately the loop begins to digest itself and dissolves into oblivion towards the end. So the gaps just help you to count those loops.
Like no other Artist, Trent Reznor never disappoints cuz if ur a true fan , u will understand his passion and love for what he does and how he pushes his talent further and making it more interesting and creative. Annoying at the end to some, that I understand. Anyways, gap edit was an awesome idea. I love it either way! 😎🤘✌️

Treat it like a special restaurant order: The first 4:03 of the song is the dish. The loops are the sides you can get with it. The 3 seconds of feedback and filler between the two are the way you want it cooked. The gaps are getting rice pilaf instead of rice. Now, did you want the loop to still degrade, continue 52 times, or have the song end abruptly at 4:03 before any noise? I can also throw in like 8 loops that slowly fade out to nothing if you prefer. :-)

The first time - it was difficult to wade through this long end .. but now I listen to it on headphones, at home and in the car ... And it's a better chaos - than what I hear on TV or online - about politics, bitches, idiots, worse terrorists. This song is all about it and it's what's around us ... it's my opinion as a creator.
I wish I would have been smart enough to have it degrade from high-quality to low-quality over the entire duration, but unfortunately it's a repetitive degradation of single image loops in intervals of 5 seconds rendered at a very low bit rate.

For some reason, this feels like a really short, dark version of that song by The Caretaker, the one that lasts like 6 hours and a half. Listening to it without the cuts is quite an experience, honestly, as you don't notice it's getting droned and reverbed until it's already noticeable. Maybe it even has the same purpose, to dwelve into the degenerating human mind. Please, value your moments of sanity.

The reason Trent and Atticus have that 1/10th pause in the bar before the melody loops is to cause a sense of anxiety within the listener, at least that is what my friend told me. He was a music theorist in college and he said that this type of bar break is very unnatural to the ear, so it causes uneasiness -- like a a sudden silence over a thunderstorm. Have the lightening strikes past or has someone fallen into the eye of the storm? As the song loops, the Hertz drop each time, cause more uneasiness as the song becomes quite granular.
My take on it. The original works better with the gaps, because it's long and gives an impression of 'broken'. This version is superb but doesn't suit the full 11mins, the looping feels less broken and therefore loses something. I think a shortened edit of this track so that the gapless loop at the end lasts only a minute or so with a slow fade out would work much better, kinda like a radio edit version. Good job tho.
Everything Trent does from an artistic standpoint has purpose. There isn't one single sound in any given fraction of a second that is not there purposefully. If you look at it from the perspective of the soundtrack for a cartoon, it's basically the same principle. Absolutely everything you hear is manufactured for you to hear and is not accidental. That being said, I don't compare the two as far as which one I think is "better", because one is the way it was meant to be heard and one is not. I just wanted to see what it would sound like without that unnerving interuption between loops. I honestly never listen to this version anymore and really haven't since a few days after I put it up.
I'd loved to say I love this version if only it was the original. But now I'm really into the original LOL the first 3 times I listened didn't like the gap but now I don't like it without the gap. Still nice job doing it, it's great for the ones who are not into the gap.

I'm not sure what you mean. All I did was take the original song and remove the gaps from 4 minutes 16 seconds on between the loops. It should still be at 192 kbps.
Hm, I don't know how to describe this, and it feels weird saying it on a video old enough to be in grade school anyway, but I think the gap between the loops should be longer. Like, if the original song puts 1 and a half beats between loops to make it feel disjointed, you shortened it to one beat, when I think it would have been better to lengthen it to 2 beats.

It is my (and several thousand other fans') opinion that Add Violence is a prequel to a story being told in reverse, much like Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death), Mechanical Animals, and Antichrist Superstar were also told in reverse. It is my interpretation as a listener, which doesn't make me wrong. "Manson had initially conceived Mechanical Animals as a sequel to Antichrist Superstar, following The Worm after its fall from power. However, when Holy Wood was released the story was now to be read in an inversed order and suddenly Mechanical Animals was a prequel to Antichrist Superstar rather than its sequel. This shows that the actual story was not conceived linearly and ideas that initially represented or referred to one thing, may now have a meaning entirely different from that which was originally intended." In this same manner, I believe Reznor is doing the story in reverse. Pay attention to the lyrics. Listen to how one flows into the next. And please don't tell me I don't have a clue when you are obviously the one who has no idea what you are talking about.

Literally my pleasure. Making minor tweaks to Trent and Atticus' work over the years had been a way to fill the gaps myself (where idle time is concerned). I use a very, very simple wav editor called "Acoustica" I picked up about 12 years ago and have never updated. No filters, no volumization, and no pitch or tempo changes. Just snip-snip, copy-copy, paste-paste.

Very interesting. I've gotten so used to the gap the seamless version almost seems just as jarring at first. I've played around with that last 7 minutes or so myself, but I like what you did here.
The loop is repeated 52 times. Exactly Trent‘s age in years when this track was Release. Immediately the loop begins to digest itself and dissolves into oblivion towards the end. So the gaps just help you to count those loops.
Like no other Artist, Trent Reznor never disappoints cuz if ur a true fan , u will understand his passion and love for what he does and how he pushes his talent further and making it more interesting and creative. Annoying at the end to some, that I understand. Anyways, gap edit was an awesome idea. I love it either way! 😎🤘✌️

Treat it like a special restaurant order: The first 4:03 of the song is the dish. The loops are the sides you can get with it. The 3 seconds of feedback and filler between the two are the way you want it cooked. The gaps are getting rice pilaf instead of rice. Now, did you want the loop to still degrade, continue 52 times, or have the song end abruptly at 4:03 before any noise? I can also throw in like 8 loops that slowly fade out to nothing if you prefer. :-)

The first time - it was difficult to wade through this long end .. but now I listen to it on headphones, at home and in the car ... And it's a better chaos - than what I hear on TV or online - about politics, bitches, idiots, worse terrorists. This song is all about it and it's what's around us ... it's my opinion as a creator.

I wish I would have been smart enough to have it degrade from high-quality to low-quality over the entire duration, but unfortunately it's a repetitive degradation of single image loops in intervals of 5 seconds rendered at a very low bit rate.

For some reason, this feels like a really short, dark version of that song by The Caretaker, the one that lasts like 6 hours and a half. Listening to it without the cuts is quite an experience, honestly, as you don't notice it's getting droned and reverbed until it's already noticeable. Maybe it even has the same purpose, to dwelve into the degenerating human mind. Please, value your moments of sanity.
The gap is pretty unsettling, but this is much more unsettling.

Not a prob. You should be able to easily compress it to MP3 using any number of free programs so it doesn't take up so much space on your preferred player or phone. I didn't want to do it because I don't like choosing the quality of music for people. I leave it as CD quality and let them decide.

I'm almost positive it was for tempo purposes. If I were to take that last bar of music in the loop and stretch it .1 second it would probably sound perfect. However, I've already posted enough of these, so I'm just going to leave these as is.

The reason Trent and Atticus have that 1/10th pause in the bar before the melody loops is to cause a sense of anxiety within the listener, at least that is what my friend told me. He was a music theorist in college and he said that this type of bar break is very unnatural to the ear, so it causes uneasiness -- like a a sudden silence over a thunderstorm. Have the lightening strikes past or has someone fallen into the eye of the storm? As the song loops, the Hertz drop each time, cause more uneasiness as the song becomes quite granular.

My take on it. The original works better with the gaps, because it's long and gives an impression of 'broken'. This version is superb but doesn't suit the full 11mins, the looping feels less broken and therefore loses something. I think a shortened edit of this track so that the gapless loop at the end lasts only a minute or so with a slow fade out would work much better, kinda like a radio edit version.

Everything Trent does from an artistic standpoint has purpose. There isn't one single sound in any given fraction of a second that is not there purposefully. If you look at it from the perspective of the soundtrack for a cartoon, it's basically the same principle. Absolutely everything you hear is manufactured for you to hear and is not accidental. That being said, I don't compare the two as far as which one I think is "better", because one is the way it was meant to be heard and one is not. I just wanted to see what it would sound like without that unnerving interuption between loops. I honestly never listen to this version anymore and really haven't since a few days after I put it up.
I'd loved to say I love this version if only it was the original. But now I'm really into the original LOL the first 3 times I listened didn't like the gap but now I don't like it without the gap.
Still nice job doing it, it's great for the ones who are not into the gap.

I'm not sure what you mean. All I did was take the original song and remove the gaps from 4 minutes 16 seconds on between the loops. It should still be at 192 kbps.

Hm, I don't know how to describe this, and it feels weird saying it on a video old enough to be in grade school anyway, but I think the gap between the loops should be longer. Like, if the original song puts 1 and a half beats between loops to make it feel disjointed, you shortened it to one beat, when I think it would have been better to lengthen it to 2 beats.

I don't remember Trent ever commanding a group of monks to write a book proclaiming that its third rule outline the illegality of remastering his works. It is my (and several thousand other fans') opinion that Add Violence is a prequel to a story being told in reverse, much like Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death), Mechanical Animals, and Antichrist Superstar were also told in reverse. It is my interpretation as a listener, which doesn't make me wrong.
"Manson had initially conceived Mechanical Animals as a sequel to Antichrist Superstar, following The Worm after its fall from power. However, when Holy Wood was released the story was now to be read in an inversed order and suddenly Mechanical Animals was a prequel to Antichrist Superstar rather than its sequel. In this same manner, I believe Reznor is doing the story in reverse. Pay attention to the lyrics. Listen to how one flows into the next.

Kult: I can't agree with this at all. He does everything for a reason. I understand why he did it. I was listening to both versions equally, but now that I've heard this take dozens of times while editing, I'm back to the original. And, I must say, I enjoy the genius behind adding the break.
There's a comment buried in here somewhere by a user named Scott that explains the psychology of Trent's method, which I'm not going to regurgitate, but I suggest you comb through and see if you can find it.
The gaps are why I've listened to this track so many times, trying to figure it out. I think understand a bit but even if I don't I put a good rate of thought into it.
