This might sound crazy but the assault rifle actually does a decent job at stripping enemy health at Close range. If your in a situation where you emcounter an elite at close quarters, you can use a plasna pistol to drain it's shield and the assault rifle to dispatch of it. The pistol isn't as easy to use at close range. The plasma rifle can also drain elites shields but not as quickly as a plasma pistol. Grenades are very useful
In most use cases, any other weapon is better to get a hold of than the AR. I know, it's got that nostalgic taste to it, as a long time fan, it had to let go of my childhood bias too 😂 but after playing this game to 100%, and now a third time on the mcc, the Assault rifle really is just not what it needs to be
For example. On laso... Just imagine the AR as a tool for infinite ammo reloads. As that's genuinely what it its best use case is. In Pillar of Autumn, you essentially just abuse grunt funeral and pistol spam to the finish. Again, on laso; Regular legendary is not as drastic. But essentially you get more traction out if plasma to the enemy shields, and then pistol for the headshot
