YOSEMITE HALF DOME: The HIKE for my LIFE

- 3 months ago, I found out I had a sudden onset of Diabetes (probably due to prednisone steroids spiking my blood sugar and inducing diabetes). I made immediate life style changes. I cut out sugar, rice, potatoes (yeah, that includes French fries), bread, flour and then started taking this medication called Jardiance, which makes me urinate sugar instead of absorbing it. I also started working out at the gym for about 1 hour a day, for 3 days a week.
I made a couple of other videos about my journey fighting diabetes, check out "WHY I ALMOST had to QUIT OVERLANDING"

In this little short film. I see if all the weight loss and hiking training will pay off. Can I complete the very difficult Yosmite Half Dome hike?

WE DID IT! 🙌🏼
John I am so proud of you, I have been at Pre Diabetes for a couple of years finally getting a handle on this. The eating habits are the most challenging for me. But I have persevered and have lost almost 40lbs . Keep up the good work.
@@Grey-Squirrel-Adv that’s awesome to hear! 40 lbs. is substantial! I’ll nibble on a piece of candy here and there, but for the most part, I’ve been doing a good job resisting. To be honest, I’ve been focusing mostly on strengthening my legs for this hike, but now that I’ve completed this goal, I’ll be working on the core and upper body. Building more muscle is the key to a lot of this for me.
Hi Jon - This is Pat of “Pat & Emma” fame😂. We STILL talk about the crazy time in 3/2022 we drove our Power Wagon from Portland, OR to join a group of strangers for our first over landing trip on the Mojave Road. Your patience and generosity in basics skills set us up for success in many adventures to come. Who knew there was a technique to using a Rotopax?? Congratulations on your heath achievements and conquering Half Dome. If you ever made it to OR, we’re avid hikers and would love to meet up!
@@patcain8748 hello 👋 good to hear from you again! Say hello to Emma for me please. It was nice to meet you two and would love to hear how things are going. I still remember your power wagon build pretty vividly. I remember the FSR tent. Have you made any changes?
So, I would have gone to Overland Expo PNW, but since our half dome permit was only 3 days after the event, I decided to stay more local. Perhaps next year!
Bro I’ve always wanted to do this. Great job brother!! Stoked you are getting your health under control and enjoying life! 😊
Back 7 years ago, I said I’d never do this hike again. With poles and a comfortable back pack and have to hike a longer distance (18 instead of 16.5 miles) it wasn’t too bad, and I’d do it again. Looking to do bigger hikes and aiming to do something I’ve always wanted to do, snow shoeing + back country snowboarding this winter.
Nicely done. Proud of you brother. Making good choices and living big.
@@robbergstrom943 thanks Brother Rob. You know what’s hilarious is that my Mother saw the TH-cam video of our Death Valley trip and said…. “That guy looks just like you”. You really do look more like you’d be my Brother than my actual blood brother 😂. Anyways, thanks 🙏, I’m feeling great with the changes and this is going to open up a whole new world for me. I plan on show shoeing and snowboarding.
Been here for you 3 or 4 years with you watching your videos. I really support you doing this and am extremely pround. keep going man!
Thanks man! I’m not letting myself “go out like that”. That’s my mentality 😀.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring beautiful mindset. Keep shredding!
Thanks for sharing this side of your life that will start to run in conjunction with your overlanding adventures!
@@GrizzlyPath thanks Zack!!! You get it!!! I know there’s some people think that I’m quitting overlanding, BUT I had to make these health changes so I could CONTINUE to overland. I have new motivation and these trips will have more purpose for me.
Great job the two of you. I didn't realize the hike to the cables was so difficult.
@@artbencomo317 thanks! Yeah, it’s rough on the mist trail. Someone was saying to take the John Muir trail because it’s not as technical. I’ll have to try that another time.
Great to see you getting back into hiking...I think that's one thing I try to do when I go overland is try to hike around the area a bit.
@@Michael_Tran thanks 🙏 congrats on the little one.
Awesome! Your going to be ripping the snowboard this year having last 45lbs...or.more + strong legs from hiking😃
@@t.o.f.t.s. just losing about 20 lbs. I noticed doing so much better on the snowboard. I decided to not renew my Ikon pass, since I wasn’t sure what my health condition would be. Well anyways, I plan on doing some snow shoeing and then snowboarding down this winter. Its something I’ve always wanted to do
Just watching you go up the cables was exhausting.
WTG, Bro!
@@IronmanV5 thanks man! The cables weren’t too bad, but definitely scary, haha! On the way down, my forearms were feeling it. My rubber gloves started falling apart.
Congratulations!! Very impressive, both the Half Dome hike and your journey to better health. For the 14er make sure to stay extra hydrated!
Wow Jon you’re awesome! I just visited Yosemite for the first time with friends, a couple of days ago. They did not want to do any moderate or difficult trails, I can now clearly see why. I wasn’t a big fan of the park at all because of the tourist and over crowded easy trails, hope to go back soon and do some moderate/difficult trails.
great job. video really puts it into perspective how difficult this trail is
@@richiequinones282 thanks! I wish I did a better job at capturing the half dome cables, but glad I was able to capture the beauty and technical sections of the trail.
Awesome video, good job you two. Danni was an awesome trail companion!!! I once ran that trail up to sub dome, I knew some locals that used to do that for training so I had to see how I would compete with their times. 12:54 - I would advise taking the John Muir trail on the trip down, as it's less technical, especially when you're already fatigued, as well as it offers different vantage points. Again, congratulations on completing this in such brutal conditions. "Go Brush your teeth!!!"
@@pf465 thanks 🙏! That’s a really good tip about taking the John Muir trail. I’ll have to try this next time! I’ll be coming back here for some other hikes before years end. The Wife and I will also return this winter for some camping too.
Congrats Jon! I’ve done half dome 3 times but I wish I documented the adventure to look back on like you did here. Thanks for sharing and keep up the health and fitness journey! 💪🏼
@@HaCk3Erx thanks 🙏! I was hoping to get some epic footage of climbing the cables, but as you can see, it wasn’t the greatest. Great reason to go back! I plan on picking up a Insta360 X4
Congrats bro. You conquered the Half Dome 🤙🏽 this is a good sample and motivation
@@ir8maverickmichaeljavillon306 thanks Michael! I know you’re really big on physical fitness. Getting slapped with “diabetes” was a wake up call like no other. My choice was to stop eating sugar /starches or start taking medication , and I really didn’t want to become reliant on medication. I do take jardiance though, which is suppose to be good for the kidneys and heart. No ozempic for me tho 😃
Very inspirational video. I too battle Type2 and do what I can to maintain. Sometimes I get complacent. Your video has given me a push to do more.
Awesome work with this hike and for taking care of yourself! Major progress in a relatively short period of time.
So inspiring bro! Your videos keep getting better and better!!
@@matthewrothman6793 thanks bud! This winter, we need to do some snow shoeing and back country snowboarding. I don’t want to do this by myself. Could get dangerous. Let’s do it!!!
Congrats brother it's an awesome hike I did it back in 77 I was 15 yrs old
hell yeah! way to go! Really enjoying your videos
Outstanding, Jon!
Great video and a legitimate achievement. The last time I went up, I took my son Joe in 2016 although our day up Half Dome was easier: we'd backpacked down from Tuolumne Meadows and stayed at Little Yosemite the night before, so it was quite a bit less climbing.
Your video was great, although I was surprised you didn't show us some shots off the diving board, etc !
Congrats! Great video telling your journey 👍
Wow, in 105 degree temps! I could not hike but a short distance in that heat let alone the elevation you did! Congrats!
Awesome video! Congrats!!
@@aandpforme thank you! 🙏
Awesome!
CONGRATS! Im still to scared to do those darn cables and Im not ashamed on saying this. Incredible job! We had something like this happen to my husband and have done he same. We @thedirtnapperz are doing Mt. Whitney this year and this is definelty inspiring. Thank you!
Thank you Luz! I’ve heard about people developing diabetes so I knew I wasn’t the only one dealing with this. I’m glad to hear that your Husband is doing better. I too want to get to the top of Mt. Whitney, I’d ask for you to take me up with me, but i think we both know how hard it is to secure permits. Please let me know how things go. I’d love to hear about it. For now, I’ll be hitting Colorado in 2 weeks, and I plan to cheat my way up to a 14Ker by driving as close as possible and then hiking 2.5K feet uphill 😂
@@JonDZ_Adventuring best of luck. Can't wait to the next adventure
Congrats!!🎉
I did it in my 30's. Once is enough.😂 Start before sunrise, finish at sunset!
I was just there in June. I'm local-ish so I plan to go there more often. Only ever gone as far as Vernal Falls.
Im impressed dude! Great job! I could never make it. I have a Big fear of heights!
Heck Yeah!
\m/
gotta get you to do the TCT with us next time!
Good on you bro for working on your health. Half dome is no joke! How long did it take from start to finish?
OHHHH YEEEAAAAAHHh
great video, are there any electrical outlets in the tent?
How does your sister-in-law have the same last name as you?
