I use a 2-5-5 sword and yoko noto is fine, even tate noto is possible if I exaggerate the sayabiki. So realistically the difference is 3-4 cm max. I can only speak for what I was taught. Shohatto is part of the shoden series and is based on Omori ryu. For shinden shoden, the enemy is further away (as opposed to chuden where the enemy is much closer). Thus the focus in shoden is to cover the distance. This differs in Jikiden slightly, but still they also take the extra step (moving while cutting, and not just setting the foot like in seitei mae). I am not too aware of the Tokyo style of shinden so I thought maybe that was to explain the difference in the video.

How silly - waving swords around - at nobody, in particular! Not much of a "martial art", if you don't have an opponent. And would any conflict be solved by moving this slowly. A lot of pomp and ceremony!
Would appear so, but … this is the ceremonial part. It’s not for battle. Seen as a way to “prune one’s soul”. I did this daily for 7 years. My souls needed it. I could do some more TBH. Take care.
Swords are pretty impractical in any modern conflict, iaido is more like yoga with a sword, and a competitive aspect used to discern proper technique. I like to think of it more as moving poetry.

looking at red and his left knee during the kiriotoshi (1:41 - 1:42). The kiriotoshi is made without a step forward, more like seitei mae.
