  • After success with planting and hunting over sorghum last year, Bill decides to plant more acres this year. Sorghum can be a great alternative to planting corn in areas with high deer densities.

    Just Subbed Im in NC Texas , new landowner, no tractor or drill yet, not even a sidexside. Just learning what when and how to plant for my area. Overgrazing on property. I'll be back

    Looking good Bill. Really enjoyed the tree stand series and looking forward to your foodplot/habitat improvements videos.

    Fun to see this video. Planting sorghum for the first time tomorrow after work. My equipment is a bit more crude, so it will be interesting to see the results I get, and what the deer think of it. Thanks for another quality video!

      Erik, Thanks for the support. You don't need fancy equipment. Get it in the ground 1/2 to 1 inch, kill the weeds, add some fertilizer and watch it grow! Good luck. - Bill

    Bill, would like to know your cocktail for herbicides pre- and post emergence. I'm trying to get to full no-till and have a wide variety of weeds to combat.

    Glad to have the 1st blog of the 2020 season!
    Haven't heard from Owen. I know his parents had a health scare. Will he be back this season?

      Not sure that Owen will contribute this year. Until I am certain on a direction, I need to leave it at that. Owen is doing good, it is just a matter of working out the behind the scenes stuff to everyone's satisfaction. -Bill

      In the back of my mind I thought he probably had sold his farm.

    Curious to see how this works out. The farmer on my stomping ground planted sorghum to PREVENT deer from eating his crop. I can say with certainty... it worked! The farm had FAR FEWER deer in it than years past.

    I planted some myself just curious what lbs per acre u where aiming for and the gate / clutch setting . Thanks

    • @midwestwhitetaildailyblogs
      @midwestwhitetaildailyblogs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was shooting for around 11 pounds per acre (free seed so it was slightly low germination). I had the RTP Genesis set for 0 Gate and 1.3 on the clutch. That was with 22 1/2 inch rows (duct tape over the droppers that I wanted to block). - Bill

    Hi Bill I recently planted a big and Beasty plot about a week ago. The grass is starting to come back and i was wondering what you use to control the grass in your big and Beasty food plots. It is already too late to use roundup and 24D. Thanks.

    • @noro305
      @noro305 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you looked into Clethodim? I try not to disturb the soil if I can when sowing small seed. Usually Roundup over grass/weeds is enough and sow/fertilize over dead stuff. Just my strategy that tends to work

    • @lukeervie8552
      @lukeervie8552 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I am going to use clethodim I sprayed it with roundup and 24D about a month and a half before planting. I didn’t give it a second hit before planting. Thanks for the feedback appreciate it. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to kill the big and Beasty also.

    We’re about to get 125 acres in Illinois and I’m wondering what we should plant first in the food plots corn or beans

    • @midwestwhitetaildailyblogs
      @midwestwhitetaildailyblogs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't really go wrong with either one, but if you want to plant something yet this year that will attract and hold deer, you could try the brassica blends. I use one called Big N Beasty. (frigidforage.com/big-n-beasty/) You can still plant that this summer (from roughly 3rd week of July until mid-August in IL). Good luck. - Bill

    Was quoted $14k from the closest dealer near me for that Genesis 8 no till drill. This price is not practical for the common food plotter. I wonder how much RTP gets for those drills, and how much the dealer tacks on?? Sucks because I really wanted to try one, I hear good reviews for them. But not for $14k.. Wish there was a way to buy these drills direct from RTP.

      Rich man game have 1000 acres control food deer will fallow. Don't hurt to have good sponsors. But Bill does work hard and deserves credit for building the best whitetail show.

      Spray 4 oz. To gallon of round up on the area. Broadcast 10 lbs crimson or red clover 10 lbs buckwheat and 20 lbs sorghum to acre. Good results.

      14k for a new drill is about right..
      Can find used drills cheaper.

    • @karlcole9539
      @karlcole9539 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alot of county conservation districts will rent a no till drill to you for super cheap, if they have one obviously..that's what I do. It's 100$ up to ten acres. I'm lucky enough to have a higher horse power tractor to pull it. Even if you don't you could always ask a local farmer or neighbor to help you out. You could do that for your lifetime and not equal up to what a new drill costs.
