I'm not gonna lie, the idea of Jedi Power Battles NOT being intended as a co-op game has never even crossed my mind in my entire life. Maybe it's just because it was one of the video games my mom would actually play with me, but I've always imagined that as one of those early multiplayer games PS1 had like crash bash where you could play with your friends on one tv before online gaming ruined human civilization forever. The way the scores are displayed was another thing. It made you feel like you were competing for the higher score, rather than only focusing on teamwork. All of your struggles you'd described made perfect sense to me knowing that you were playing solo. Your memories of phantom menace are almost identical to mine, but I know I used the cheat codes to get to those levels and never got there on my own. Still, I thought it was the coolest game ever as a five year old when it came out.
43:48 Yoda had already been depicted in Galactic Battlegrounds albeit as a small model in a large strategy game. but clearly it was a conscious design limitation made especially for power battles
Star Wars Demolition and Jedi Power Battles were two games that my grandmother let me play on her PS1 growing up They are ingrained in my head. Thanks for playing them ❤ Also Obiwan Kenobi game when???
Bro that obi-wan game was so hard but I eventually mastered his Jedi trial level and beat all the other Jedi masters. I will never forget how badass I felt after that.
In the 'Phantom Menace' tie-in game, I always assumed the creature you fought on Tatooine was some kind of feral Wookiee. Also I will NOT stand for this Malakili slander, that guy is great and seeing him cry over the Rancor broke my heart as a kid.
I remember being a little kid and thinking, “oh, the Rancor was his dog.” 😭And then being really mad at Luke because he clearly could’ve just shut the door earlier and been totally safe instead of waiting until it would kill the Rancor.
Oh good call, I assumed because it was acting like a mindless creature that is must have been non-sentient, but Yuzzum makes a lot of sense. My only idea was a forgotten creature called a Trompa lol
I absolutely love that in addition to reviewing the games, you also talk in detail about their contributions to the lore and how they fit (or don't quite fit) in the EU, I'll be looking forward for videos on GameCube and PS2 games!
By the way Evan, I just found a video on youtube which shows the gungan mini-game in Jedi power battles. It's called : "Let's Play Jedi Power Battles, Bonus Levels: Darth Maul Confirmed For Disappointing Unlock" at 14:45 (posted by FantasticFourLP in 2012). You're welcome ;)
@@sadomars2446he says he played the version that came 4 months after the pc version. He never mentions how the game recently was re released on the ps store and that the pc version is still better looking than the ps store version. Pay closer attention next time 👍
Nice review as always, very detailed ;) It's just a shame you couldn't play as the PC version of the phantom menace, it improves so much the gaming experience ^^
This is extraordinarily nitpicking but the mace windu episode 1 lightsaber at 41:30 is used as "generic lightsaber hilt" on the clone wars show- I noticed a LOT of media had that design.
can confirm gungan round up was a thing, but i used a game shark to aculy play it, the game is basically capture the flag but with jar jar, you are a gungan warrier and you have to beat the heck out of him to get jar jar to enter your capture area
Strange that he, as such a big self-professed EU fan, doesn't understand that red was just as viable a saber color as any other for a Jedi before Attack of the Clones.
The Phantom menace was developed by Big Ape but the fmv were made by Lucasfilm indeed. You can find a really interesting interview of 2 developers of the game on the channel of Flandrew by the way.
Why did I love Jedi Power Battles so much for? I'll never know, but it was a blast with a mate. And we cannot forget Star Wars Demolition !! I actually ENJOYED these games ALOT 🎮 ❤
It's nice to be this early. Will have to finish this tonight when I get off. Comment for the algorithm and appreciation of the content and hard work. Take care everyone!
I used to think I was just really bad at JPB as a kid. Then, when I realised as an adult that JPB just sucks at being a game, it made me feel better about myself.
Ah the PS1 the legendary consoel with so many unique games followed by the PS2 and the PS3. Unique games died on the PS4 and became a legend on the PS5.
I love that Phantom Menace game so good and very memeable i probably prefer the PS1 version over PC cause it does have a god mode cheat while the PC doesnt. I will agree with many that the Dreamcast version of Jedi Power Battles is the superior version, it came out after the PS1 version and they made a few improvements and fixes to the game after feedback especially with Darth Maul only having 1 single blade rather than 2 for his dual blade saber when you play as him. Big Ape Productions were the ones who made the infamous Simpsons Wrestling.
I remember Jedi power battles and i was able to beat it FIVE TIMES and suffer all the way through without cheats as this was only one of 4 games i owned at the time. I didn’t know there were cheats till much later. The hardest was plo koon fighting maul the second time. My suffer was just from the fact i wanted to get all three rewards. This game is why i won’t play souls games. I can’t do it again. Also the is the hardest boss in the game is won by hit and run tactics
There is no wolf3d code in Dark Forces 1. The engine is more than a generation ahead of what the Wolfenstein engine could do. There are three generations of those early, not truly 3d shooter engines. Wolfenstein marks the first generation, being a totally flat world, just ground and walls located using bitmaps as maps. The second generation is Doom and all it's clones. Where you have 45 degree walls and elevation, but limited height and no ability to have one room above another one (fake z-coordinates). The Jedi-Engine, together with Duke Nukem 3d is part of the last of those not-really 3d 3d-engines, before quake brought us real 3d. The Jedi engine has way more capabilities in terms of verticality than all i.d. software games to that point.
Ahh. PS1 Phantom Menace. I remember me and my brother standing around the corner as Obi, where you're final duel with Maul is, just out of his line of sight and just shooting the fuck out of him with every weapon we acquired throughout the game, looking at his health bar to see if we were aiming at the right spot. We tried to do it the legit for a whole day. Literally the only way to beat him for us was to cheese. And we ran outta ammo and had to Saber him a few times and we even died allot doing that lol. Game's like Tomb Raider and Diablo had a shitty Star Wars kid. I love it.
If you're curious about Pencak Silat. It's the martial art they use in The Raid movies.
Yeah and those movies rock.
This is where the fun begins
The variation of these games makes you miss Lucas arts.
I still think of them...
47:09 - Well right there, whenever it roars - that's when you strike it and move out of the way.

This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster an elegant weapon for a more civilized age-Obi wan Konobi 6:33 also Obi Wan.
"These games are older than I am..." That really hit hard haha🤣 Great video and wonderful to see some of these gems againl
Dark Forces came out when I was 12, played it on the family 486, alongside other Star Wars classics like X-Wing and TIE Fighter... the 90's ruled
I really liked the phantom menace as a kid. It's was long, had some secrets and I was proud af when finally finishing it. The PC version tho.

Pretty sure the beast in Mos Espa is a Yuzzum, first appearing in the book Splinter of the Mind's Eye. Similar to wookies.

Thanks so much! It's my favorite part actually.
Adi's lightsaber was supposed to be pink. It looks red but if I'm not mistaken, Maul's color is red and it looks different than Adi's.
42:45
Before AotC was released, red wasn't exclusively for bad guys. Tons of jedi used red sabers in the comics and books

Such a fair & fun breakdown of these titles from my childhood! Jedi Power Battles is actually an idea I’d love to see someone revisit.
You really need to select the 4:3 screen format for PS1 games.

He addressed why the PC review isn’t included. I don’t think it’s a matter of “couldn’t.”
I wish there was a little mod for the camera to be more "behind" you, so you can see further ahead
If you haven't read it yet, I must recommend Star Wars: Rogue Planet as a book. it's my favorite one, and takes place 3 years after Phantom Menace.
Read a chunk of that one actually.
@@evprince it's one of my favorite books ever
Jedi power battles LET'S GO!
ALSO! EXCELLENT CHANNEL!
FREAKING AWESOME 😊

My cousins and I used to love Masters of Terras Kasi. It's funny how as a kid you're able to have fun with just about anything

No one has ever talked this much about Demolition.
I'm pretty sure that's true actually.
Was Vader not unlockable in the PlayStation version of Jedi Power Battles?
Not that I found.
Hey Evan... Jedi Power battles is getting a remaster on current gen consoles...
So I've seen... I guess a review will be incoming after release!
I love how you pronounce the planet names. "grow-moss", (gromas) "Ah-know-it" (anoat) etc...
So... why did the Rancor Keeper have Lyn Me eaten? Is there a reason for this?
21:00 it kinda looks like a terentatak
The beast in the streets of Mos Espa I will say is a dark-furred creature called a Trompa. Jabba's champion looks like a Mantellian Savrip to me.
Strange that he, as such a big self-professed EU fan, doesn't understand that red was just as viable a saber color as any other for a Jedi before Attack of the Clones.
Every game on the og Xbox next???👀
That's complicated because the kotor games are so big.
@@evprince yeah there’s hundreds of reviews on them. Just kind of skim them, planets, characters, combat, less plot 😉
Power Battles is the best Star Wars Game i ever played, except the very old tie fighter thingy on pc (where you could even modify your tie fighter)
Coruscant, the whole planet is one big city. And look over there. Chancelor Valorim is waiting for us.
Jedi power battles has the distinction of being one of my least liked star wars games ever.
That's saying something with Squadrons existing.

Jedi Power Battles is a much better experience on Dreamcast, believe I played thru it twice in one go because I didn't have a VMU.

Also, the Galactic Basic Language is a retcon that always sat sour with me.
