So it would take about 2.5 hours to get the full inch. Break it up in 30 mins or even more? I know soil adsorption would be a factor to.
Your system if its in ground may have an option for soak. If it does use this and it breaks up the watering cycle to allow for the ground to soak in the water before starting to run again. If not, set it up to run for 50% of the watering and then 50% on a second run. This will allow the soil time to soak in the water and avoid runoff.

Yes, absolutely. That is the best way to do it. As long as your grass looks healthy and not brown or yellow you should be good to go.
