I never have any clue what's going on when I watch KI lmao.
Likewise, I thought it was down to not playing the series at first but I get a good sense of how other fighting games flow pretty quickly.
It does kinda require having played the game to appreciate what's going on, because there's so many underlying systems for countering, and countering counters. After I bought the game and got into it, I appreciate KI tournaments a hundred times more.
Same. I'll admit I was drawn to it by how chaotic it looks. You don't really see people beating on the opponent as hard in any other fighting game thanks to autodoubles and the combo system in general.
KI, MK and SSB. I never know what the fuck is going on.
Basically, Gargos is an overpowered POS. He doesn't do a ton of damage, but he has every damn tool you can imagine, and it means he basically just controls every game. Probably the most oppressive character in a fighting game.
To sum up the mechanics briefly, Most combo's are somewhat "autopilot" in that you can basically hit any button. Light medium or heavy, at mostly any time. The opponent can guess which one you hit, hit the same, and break out of your combo. If they fail you can continue your combo. There are "cashout moves". Basically you combo for as long as you can without them breaking it, then you use a cashout move and based on how big the combo was they take more damage. The whole of the game is basically >Set up big combo >Don't get out-guessed >Cash out for big damage.
HungryBox's story is something you'd read in a movie. His biological father had passed away not too long before EVO, and said "You'll be good, but never the best". Juan sure showed him. He played his heart out and won. Armada was on point, but simply cracked to HBox's solid play and slipped. Having something that heavy on his mind and still pulling out the win is what puts him leagues above most other Melee players. I can only dream of being as brilliant as he is.
See, I knew about HBox's struggles with proving his worth and never quite grasping that brass ring at major events - especially his rivalry with Armada - but I knew nothing about his father stating that he'll never be the best. That's one hell of a mountain to conquer, and mad props on him for doing so.
Congratulations, Hungrybox; you deserve it.

I was in my underwear in the morning watching it thinking to myself, if Tekken Master beats him I will rip off my underwear and run around my neighborhood butt naked in hype. Anyways lol that match had me on the edge all I was thinking was the King will finally be dethroned.

I'm going to be honest. Seeing LI Joe's Dad so fucking happy and proud of his son almost made me cry. It's just so amazing to see that moment because

2. My family has never supported me and my love of video games.

what? bruh he was playing Erron the whole time except for the last game, he wouldv'e got bodied if he played Alien against War God Kotal but Tekken switched to Blood God which screwed him over and gave Sonic the chance to play Alien against Kotal. Mind Games ftw

"Alien as a counter pick to blood god." I don't know how long you've played MKX for but you don't even need to be a genius to realise that Alien has no bad match ups, counter picking isn't involved when it comes to that one character. Alien is cheap and gives easy victories, Sonic Fox being desperate he chose someone he clearly knows is broken and can get him the win with easy 50-50s and zoning. At the end of the day he did what he did, chose a cheap character and got the win. Not saying anything bad but it was kind of scummy for him to do but it's whatever gets you the win.

that Megaman played was actually doing things that I don't see any other Megamans do. He even used the saw blade to hit confirm into up-tilt, which is definitely a strat that I'm gonna steal, lol. The fact that he took a character that's been stuck as a mid-tier practically even since Smash 3ds came out is incredibly awesome.

To me the best moment of EVO was the fact that it was on T.V. and on ESPN2 at that. Watching SF or just any fighting game in general to be on T.V. we could only dream about this years back or chuckle at how awesome but mostly likely it will never happen or our generation wouldn't be around to see it on such a grand stage....FGC is really making big moves man. I hope next year and so on we get to watch all Top 8 on television this from here on out.
It will probably be Street Fighter because it's the longest running fighting game in history.
Not only that, but this year we got support from a basketball legend in Bill Walton who had amazing time watching all the games on Sunday at the arena. I don't think that it would be possible to broadcast all Top 8 because not a lot of people would recognize Guilty Gear, or Mortal Kombat, as opposed to Street Fighter . If within like 3 or 4 years time this continues to grow bigger, I wouldn't be surprised if there was an E-Sports Network that would broadcast all of the Top 8 at an Evo.
Well, Mortal Kombat and funny enough Night Trap were the straw that broke the Rating board's back.

Watched on Twitch, both the Smash Grand Finals and the LI Joe movements were electric. I literally was trying to give that guy my energy.

I'd say Omito's performance in Xrd was pretty freaking hype. He had so many insane clutch plays in the finals. He didn't win, but his matches were some of the most intense matches in the finals.
Omito had me on the edge of my seat. Them comebacks were something else.
It was also really hype to see last years winner getting wiped on the floor after playing so many dominant tournaments.
Dude Rion's matches were so tense!

I don't play guilty gear but omito was insane. He kept clutching it out with ridiculous comebacks. Probably gonna try revelator once it comes out on PC.
Evo will never be able to recreate the hype and craze that was created with Daigo and his epic come back in Third Strike with Ken.

Daigo's kind of overplayed at this point. I'm not saying he's bad because, like a lot of top tier players, he can still beat any one of them. However, his tournament showings have been getting weaker and weaker and it seems like his only claim to fame was that one moment in Third Strike. I respect Daigo though.
Scyle Ornitier He's the most successful street fighter player ever. He's in the Guinness World Records. The 3rd strike thing is def not his only claim to fame.
LI Joe did us proud. No matter how many times I watch this, the huge grin on my face when Joe's introduced and the whole arena stands up and screams will never go away. What a man. I hope he wins SFV this year!

This whole idea that your Son is basically the one US player to get into Top 8 and the dad actually went out of his way to fly straight to Vegas to watch him fight.
Honestly, LI Joe's Dad should be an MVP in his own right for being a parent who actually was very supportive; especially considering that he didn't tell his son that he was there until right when he got interviewed.
i don't know about anyone else but watching this and looking back on those moments really brings a tear to my eye...

I thought the first top 8 match between Infiltration and Yukadon was Hellas hype, but ofc I didn't watch the whole thing. I think ChrisG should have been mentioned as well because he played the best I've ever seen him play... Eben losing Morgan the majority of fights especially vs KBR
And don't forget Daigo vs Tokido.

Those were the two strongest Ryu players in the tournament as well. I hope they don't share the same bracket path again for next year. -__-
+Tim Macone (infinitybelt) definitely should of got a spot in this video. He was inputing wrong commands and dropping critical combos but managed to win evo
I honestly thought melee GF's was more hype than SFV, but that's just me.
Many people like myself would agree that melee had an hype GF than SFV because of the matter in which Hungrybox reset the brackets, getting the Rest kill when he was at 98%, which is obviously a kill percentage for Jigglypuff, to win Game 5 of the first set after Armada came back from a 2-0 deficit.
And yet chances are that the SF fanboys will say, "Melee was Great... But not special enough to be on ESPN2."
Both were great for sure, but it is difficult to compare if SFV's fights had alot more hype in throughout their tournament rather than it being shown in the Top 8.
But if you put Melee on a national audience, many people watching won't understand what is going on and how the overall mechanics of the game works. Whereas SFV a national audience would somewhat know what is going on because of the life meter going down, and some of people would understand how some of the mechanics in that game works.
You insult people's intelligence if you think they couldn't grasp the concept of knocking people off of a stage.
I'm not insulting anyone's intelligence. I'm stating the facts that SFV would be acceptable to a national audience than melee because everyone knows what Street Fighter is.

i agree. Geesemaster eliminating NOBI after only playing the game for a few weeks is HUGE. Poongko- a first time tekken player using a street fighter character got into top 8 placing third.. HUGE
The Kof 13 grand top 8 was amazing but the grand finals was down to the wire and was even more hype than ki imo
Kof 14, Rosa reaching GF after playing the game for a couple hours and pushing Xiao Hai with his Ramon was jaw dropping.
And All of guilty gear Top 32 was pure carnage. Especially machaboos dominance, and omitto's clawing his way out of losers bracket

It's an older game though, eventually if Nintendo wants it to last longer before the fgc gets REALLY upset about Melee taking up so much attention every year it's been at Evo so far, then they're gonna just have to remaster the game or at least make another Smash game that plays just like it or something. The game never got its chance at Evo when it first came out, now that it has, its "EVO lifespan" is pretty much going to be clutching on to it's really strong community and to its support from Nintendo, which might not last forever.
I hope Melee never disappears from EVO

Before the tournament a Hungrybox vs Armada Grand Finals was the last thing I would have wanted but Hungrybox's losers bracket run really won me over. I really enjoyed this years Evo, it was great seeing players like Plup and Zhu doing better than expected. Hopefully 2017's Melee tournament will include PPMD, Leffen and Hax$.
