    . This video put me to a deep and profound sadness Signore Diorio, one of jazz guitar’s greats. An educator who imparted his knowledge freely and with a smile has suffered a stroke that has cost him his ability to play guitar at the A+ grade level he has for decades. And here he is- struggling. Pat Martino returned from a brain aneurysm to return to A+ level jazz improviser , maybe also can Mr Joe. Dio ti benedica Su Peppino. May the creator be with you and heal you. I learned a lot from Mister Joe- Joe DiOrio

    Joe really nails it when he says there are no places where one can go and hear the greats until 4 in the morning. A ticket to see a jazz great today will not only cost a lot, but they're also few and far between. You probably won't be rubbing elbows with them either. The music industry isn't supporting jazz players in these times. No money is being put into the preservation & continuation of modern jazz. A lot of starving artists out there.

    I’m 75 and Joe, born in 1936 is ten years older. I’m experiencing the same effect, not from a stroke....from severe osteoarthritis. I first heard Joe on the Exodus To Jazz album and switched from trumpet to guitar and started listening to more guitarists. This was in the mid 60’s and got a ton of gigs in “soul” groups because I doubled.

    When I first heard Joe Diorio with Robben Ford, I changed direction. A musical revelation first and foremost, but I think I might have change in even more important ways that day. Every day in my life since then has been richer because of him. It's just amazing and wonderful to be able to sit here and once again enjoy and learn from the Man himself. Bless you, Mr Diorio!

    So sad to see my main teacher at MI back in the day pass away. Never forget first time I saw and heard him do a chord melody solo first time in my first week at GIT in 86. It seemed like chords from out of this world at the time. Spent lots of time in his tutor office jamming and chatting. Learning cool voicing - particularly remember his 13b5 and 13b5b9 voicings.

    I’ve been a fan since 1961. To this day, I’ve always felt that that Joe’s solo on Exodus was exquisite, as was all of his playing on the album. Too bad they left his solo off the 45rpm jukebox version! I’m loving this interview! I’ve read a couple of books about the 40s, 50s 60s scene in Chicago, but it was great to hear Joe talk about his experiences!

    I can see why Richie Beirach got annoyed with this guy.... I have loved Joe as a great guy and a musician for a long, long time, but this "interviewer" does not do Joe justice. He interjects names that have no meaning to Joe (i.e.; he didn't do ANY research homework), he keeps trying to make things based on racial divisions when Joe repeatedly says it was not an issue, he has a constantly patronizing attitude, and he had no idea that Joe grew up in Waterbury, not Chicago. I spent 60 of my 68 years in Chicago; MARKET STREET????? Please show me where you are making reference to on a map? Do you mean MAXWELL STREET??? When Joe says he went straight to the South Side, know that he means something other than what you are trying to force him into saying. Joe deserves so much better. Joe says his objective was to play jazz and that's what he did; for this "interviewer" to try to define him as something other than what Joe says he is is .........baffling. Joe is amazing in his patience with these obnoxious questions.

    • @JamesSeaberry
      @JamesSeaberry 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, I don't see his playing as depressing or negative. His spirit and passion comes through despite technical difficulties. Whatever your status in life, make that moment a joyful one.

      Couldn't have said it better! I got my B.A. in Journalism and if I ever handed this interview in to a professor, even on the college level, my professors would have been appalled. I knew Joe personally as well and this was not one of his favorite interviews. Very sloppy on the interviewer's part.

    People don't play guitar, it is a very ungrateful instrument. After you get to a certain age ,no matter how good you used to play ,when you get older you are not able to play anymore.
    The keyboard, on the other hand Will always remain faithful. The oldest piano players are still able to still cut it.

    • @cggg5089
      @cggg5089 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have arthritic hands (which is usually what slows down guitarists as they age), your piano skills will suffer just as much as your guitar skills.
