After driving Joe to the Newark airport, we were saying goodbye and then Joe started to walk into the airport but suddenly stopped and turned around. Joe said, I want to give you something. He reached into a pocket on his guitar case and pulled out his personal copy of Yogananda's book called, A Biography of A Yogi. Joe said that he carried this book everywhere he went. I knew the book was special to him and hesitated to take it. But Joe was insistent that I have it. Years later I sent it back to him. I wanted it to go back to the rightful owner. I purchased my own copy. -- Listening to Joe talk in this video I hear his philosophy loud and clear. Thank you Joe for everything!

Used to go see Joe at his open room ,most times I’d be there with just Joe (he obviously had a huge patience ) I was at a real crossroads with studying scales etc etc ;I was just fed up he told me a story about his meeting with Wes Montgomery “he was crying because he hated that that music had so many symbols “ well after 53 years of playing and 47 years of playing professionally I now know what Joe taught me : And I’m still learning from him,,RIP Joe …what a great bloke and unbelievably great musician

Thanks for posting. I loved Diorio since 1960/61 “Exodus to Jazz”!! I’m now 81, play nylon string guitar every day, still inspired by Joe! Of course, I’m not good by any stretch!! Still working on “Classical Gas”!

I was there on day one of GIT. Remember spending time with you, disappointing to hear your view of it, after all, it produced Howard Alden and Jimmy Herring and who knows how many more, you taught me a lot, met some friends of yours in Chicago, oh yeah! Little Joe, they all spoke highly of you, RIP!

Wow Nick, this is wonderful. So inspiring to hear Joe talk about the process. I loved going to see Joe on Guitar Nights. He was an absolutely brilliant musician.

Joe was such an inspiration. His playing, his improvisation, his musicianship, his passion. What a great player, musician, human.
Too damned bad his work received such limited exposure. His album with Jeff Berlin and Vinnie Coliuta is a treasure. Gone too soon. His book and CD on Giant Steps is a treasure trove.

Another pearl of a video plagued by a cacophony of coughs. If you are coughing STAY HOME!

He's nothing like I thought he'd be. Typical class musician though. Humble, funny and easy going. I've learned from him. More than just scales. Rip. Class act.
