What I like about this video is that you may not have captured the big 6.0 of the day, but within the brief 2 minutes you filmed you captured at LEAST four sizable aftershocks, maybe five! How many other earthquake videos show four earthquakes in two minutes, in real time? Great job capturing that. I'm sorry about the damage this did to your house, looks beautiful. I can only imagine the stress you must be going through. Thank you for being willing to share this with the rest of us.

i remember this day so clearly, this video captures perfectly the constant aftershocks and rumbling that never seemed to end.

At first I was confused why this guy was so casual but then I realised that this guy had been feeling aftershocks for literally months

Thanks for all the comments. Another good jolt of mag 5.3 last night. Surprisingly Geonet initially had this one between Little River and Akaroa which didn't make sense give the thump people got around Lincoln, Halswell and Hornby areas. By this morning Geonet "relocated" the quake to the area south-east of Halswell, which explained why power went out in the western suburbs.

In Sumner, that 6.4 did far more property damage to my business than the Christchurch February 22, 6.3 (in which I lost 2 friends). And all night I did not sleep, as there were several quakes every hour - never knowing if one would be another huge one.

I am new to living in a earthquake zone (north of Anchorage, Alaska, USA).. experienced the 7.1 Nov 30, 2018. We’ve had thousands of aftershocks since.. and even though the days after and moments after, i don’t remember the aftershocks coming as quickly as these you experienced. Maybe minutes between. I just remember hearing it coming before it started shaking. We were only 7miles from epicenter. Great video- but I feel you 100% on this

Excellent video, the best I have seen so far. It is really important for the rest of us to understand what it is like and you have done a marvellous job here.
We are over on the West Coast and are waiting for our turn, I am really keen to learn as much as possible in order to keep my family safe.
I felt this quake today over here in Greymouth and thought it would have to have been at least a 6. It is fascinating how the little shocks keep coming and how sharp they are.
    Kia kaha bro.

This was the day I was supposed to fly out of Christchurch after my very first visit to this wonderful place, a long weekend spent with my son, the love of his life and her parents. I experienced the 1.00pm (?) quake at their home. I then mentioned that, Okay, I now know what an earthquake might feel like, it's time for me to go home. The second quake hit while I was in a souvenir shop at the airport waiting for my flight home. Of course the airport was closed, flights were cancelled and my son and I became 'free loader refugees' at his loves family home. Was it a burden to bare? Of course not. We could have being staying at a top quality holiday resort. Is that enough? Of course not. With the extra time we were given, we went on a journey to Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa. Totally awesome and so worth the trip. You can relax in the naturally warm mineral waters while viewing ice capped mountains in the distance. Loved it. I wish I could go back. On our way back to Christchurch that day, the Chilean Volcano insisted in making itself known. More flights cancelled and more time to spend in Christchurch. Ho Hum! I am not trying to make light of the damage and suffering that the Christchurch people have suffered and are still going through. I just prefer to remember the good times of my visit to Christchurch. I feal very strongly for the pain and heartache of the residents and visitors to this wonderful place. Love and best wishes to you all.

Thanks for your comments - I'm glad you were able to visit Hanmer Springs given the extra time. Nine years on from the first quake, they're still rebuilding Christchurch with the stadium at Lancaster Park only now being demolished. I always said it'd take about 15 years to get the city back to where things are normal again. Even a relatively small Mag 6 earthquake can do a lot of damage. All the best. Chris.

We are the lucky ones as we live on a flat part of a hill in Lyttelton. Because we are on a ridge we don't get the liquifaction like people in the low-lying eastern suburbs of Christchurch. This time around we were cleaned up in three hours. For those with liquifaction, it will take days. Fortunately there was no loss of life in this one.

That reminds me of the close to Mag 6 we had near Mansfield Victoria a few years ago, it shook the living shit out of my old house, that is about the 3rd since I have been here. There was another one a few nights ago near Melbourne and at the same time it's name sake in Florida. They say that we could even have a Mag 7.5 around this area.

@@steviebboy69 crazy. You wouldn’t think something like that could happen so far away from a plate boundary, but they say it can 😑

@@chriskeentechnician I think this one was Intraplate and the one that shook us up was called the Governor Fault. It always wakes up and causes tremblers. Melbourne has had quite a few as they are near the line.

Yes that is the one and here in Wangaratta the big one was still strong. That is the one that they say if it lets go we will have a 7 + Mag. I thought you have have been in NZ

Thats the only way you will get it taken down and he will get a 'strike' against his account, 3 strikes and your out.
