    So, as someone who's lived most of his life in Rio, I can safely say unless there is a drastic change in the politics of the state it is unlikely the future system gets built anytime soon, regrettable though this may be.
    Rio is dominated by buses, and the bus system owners have immense political sway. I'm talking "getting people who don't agree with them killed" levels of sway.
    Additionally, the state remains financially vulnerable following the Olympics and a downturn in petroleum royalties.
    Moreover, decisions regarding the system's expansion have historically taken the path of least resistance (like connecting line 2 to line 1 instead of building a new tunnel for it).
    There is a plan to transform the city's BRT system into light rail lines. I think it has a bigger chance of success in some shape than these expansions, as there is already some infrastructure built and the right-of-way created.
    Functionally, I hope Rio is able to get these expansions built, but I don't think they'll happen anytime soon.

    • @TheLucasdms
      @TheLucasdms 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      The BRT conversion to VLT would be a downgrade in all aspects. As someone who takes the BRT every day, VLT has no capacity for it's current demand.

    • @moonlight-hm4bh
      @moonlight-hm4bh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@TheLucasdms the proposed VLT has more capacity and is faster than the current BRT system. It won't be like the city center one, since it will have segregated right of way.

    • @TheLucasdms
      @TheLucasdms 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@moonlight-hm4bh the problem isn't the right of way. VLT is too slow and has low capacity compared to the BRT, which is already an overloaded system. And if they make it too fast they are better making it a train line outright, which would require a higher cost. It was a poorly thought out system from the start.

    • @moonlight-hm4bh
      @moonlight-hm4bh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@TheLucasdms You just completely ignored what I said. The proposed VLT is faster (said to reach up to 80kph, compared to the 60kph the buses get to, but keep in mind this is the maximum speed, and since eletric motors accelerate faster, I expect a bigger difference in the average speeds) and has higher capacity (double, in fact) than the BRT, thats just a fact. The proposed one isn't the same that currently exists in the city center. I agree that the best option would be a Metro expansion or Train revitalization/expansion, but stating that the proposed VLT is worse than the current BRT is just plain wrong.
      Having the higher capacity, smaller intervals, faster speeds and smoother ride into account, it's expected the number of daily users rise from the current 200k to 500k at the end of the project, wich is expected to take 15 years (a lot of time, thats one of the things I don't like about this project, it's too little too late)
      We would achieve way more by expanding our metro, or by revitalizing our trains. But that's not a City thing, it's a State one, and our State had not done anything right in the past 10 years, so we should help out any great transit project that puts us on rails, even if not the best one possible.

      @@DaGreatestAlexander-Nelvy The problem isn't Brazil, which may not be developed, but it's still a rich country that just a few years ago was the 6th richiest country in the world. Also, one of the world's most impressives metro systems are in a country that is not considered developed.
      São Paulo, also in Brazil, has asystem with 400km of rail with 183 stations and 13 lines (with another 2 in construction), and it's considered a great system.
      Rio has a station that had its hole digged 7 years ago and still isn't finished, while São Paulo, as of now, is expanding 3 existing lines (2 - Green, 9 - Emerald and 15 - Silver), constructing 2 new lines (6 - Orange and 17 - Gold) and another 2 lines are in phase of geographical studies (19 - Sky Blue and 20 - Pink), Line 19 is supposed to be ready by 2029.
      So, this is more a state problem than a federal one. Rio is also highly dependent on the bus system still.

    This is as likely to happen as snow in the State of Rio, once every 50 years. Apart from the completion of line 2 and the forever promised line 3, there's no route decided. Line 4 as shown is a mere speculation from 2012, not even the basic surveys were done. The original idea is to L4 intersect line 1 in two stations (Gávea and Botafogo) just like line 2 should have its second intersection to line 1 at Carioca. Line 1 was designed to be a fully automated circle line, with compositions of 6 cars, headways of 90" (seconds), connecting lines 2, 3 (that should become one), 4 and 5. As for lines 2, 3, 4 they should operate with 3 - 5 minutes headways and 8 cars trains. All of that was planned back in the 1970's to be completed in 1990. Rio has been since the 1970 spiralling dawn, lost factories, financial and trade industries and lately the remaining high complexity services.

      @@teonibusdabaixadamods @@muhammadfariz2839Because instead of closing the loop and opening a new, faster route between Zona Norte and Zona Sul, extending line 1 to Méier would just keep the current bottleneck through Carioca AND make it worse by having it carry more passengers.
      Before the network can expand northward, the bottleneck through Centro must be solved. Otherwise you're just adding more passengers to an already saturated corridor.
      Same issue goes for line 2 and its proposed expansion beyond Pavuna. This would be a popular policy, but a logistical disaster on the medium to long term. Before Line 2 can expand, the issue regarding Estácio must be solved; that entails 1) reactivating Estácio and deactivating Cidade nova; 2) finishing Cruz Vermelha station; 3) bringing Line 2 to Carioca.
      All of this would essentially increase L2 capacity from 6 cars to 8 cars, and potentially allow for higher frequency on both lines 1 and 2. This happens because stations for line 2 are made for longer trains, but since Line 2 has been haphazardly made to share tracks with Line 2, its capacity is limited to only 6 cars.
      This, and the closing of the loop between Uruguai and Gávea, are THE biggest and most urgent issues.

    É horrível a distância do Recreio e da Barra para o "restante da cidade"; os trens da SuperVia merecem muito mais atenção.

That's because the Nova América mall which is connected to the station decided not to continue with the naming rights a few months ago, while Botafogo added the Coca-cola just last year as Coca-cola decided to pay for the naming rights of the station. The Coca-cola Rio head office is located in the Botafogo district.
    Also just two/three weeks ago they decided to add the district names on the name of some stations that are located in important neighborhoods to help tourists. These are the changes:
    Uruguai / Tijuca
    Saens Peña / Tijuca
    São Francisco Xavier / Tijuca
    Afonso Pena / Tijuca
    Central do Brasil / Centro

      @@lucadipaolo1997 @Luca Di Paolo Line 2 is extremely overcrowded and should end service between Central and Botafogo as soon as possible to reduce the gap between trains (right now it's a bit less than 4 minutes on rush hours).
      However if it continues only working between Estácio and Pavuna it will make Estácio an impossible station because more than 90% of L2 users will transfer to L1 to go to Downtown or the South Side, where most of the jobs are.
      What needs to happen is the conclusion of the construction on the final section of Line 2 between Estácio and Praça XV which started back in the 80s, so L1 and L2 can become fully independent again and both the overcrowdedness and the gap between trains on L2 decrease.

      @cristianequiteria773 Maybe you can charge every citizen of a NATO member state who flies in or out of the airport an airport maintenance, and improvement fee equipment to around $25 USD. If they did that, the city would probably have enough money to build an airport branch to the Rio metro in seven years, especially if they built an elevated metro line. A big part of the funding for the DC area metro extension to dulles airport was raised by increasing tolls on the freeway leading to the airport. The metro extension to dulles was many kilometers longer than a possible branch line in Rio would have to be to reach GiG. Also, the branch could include a station at the university along the way. Also, let's not forget that it's not just rich Western tourists who would use this branch. All of the Brazilians who work in the airport would benefit greatly from direct access to the metro. This was one of her main reasons why Baltimore Maryland extended the light rail line to BWI airport.
