Sometimes, crude special effects are used on purpose to make things seem surreal. Also, they're funny, and Ghostbusters is a comedy. CGI wasn't fully developed yet and wasn't used on "Ghostbusters", but there were more sophisticated special effects available, and what does a ghost or supernatural demon look like anyway?
Certainly it was before CGI could be used for anywhere near as much detail as the animation in this (even if the animation does still look rather fake to today's eyes). Though CGI was used for very simple effects...I believe Tron (82) was one of if not the first film to use CGI to a large extent, but Westworld (73) also had very minimal CGI, I believe it was the first feature to have any at all. Obviously neither look anything like the CGI we see today! Other films before this one with with minimal CGI include Future World, Star Wars, The Black Hole, Alien and Star Trek II:The Wrath of Khan.
CGI was definitely utilized, but only for some editing trickery and layering, stuff like that. They just didn't use any for creating any of the monsters/ghosts.
If you liked the movie, listen to the audio commentary for it. It’s got the director (Ivan Reitman), the writer/actor (Harold Ramis), and the producer (Joe Medjuck). It’s one of the most engaging commentary track you’ve ever heard. It goes down the rabbit hole too giving you loads of stories about the creation and production of the film. It’s totally worth it.
The housekeeper’s “what the HELL are you doing?!” Was a genuine reaction, the effects crew put more pyrotechnics on the housekeeper’s cart than she was told there was, she was legitimately scared at that point.
@@johnstorm9314 well, there was.. in The Last Starfighter.. and before that in Tron. First photorealistic CGI effect was the next year in Young Sherlock Holmes.
I saw the stop motion dogs in a movie exhibit at a museum. They were fist sized. It was really cool to see them in person. The puppets were obviously much larger but I didn't see them.

...no. The creator of BttF has gone to great lengths to make sure that for as long as they live there will not be another BttF movie. I hear they are working on making sure that stays true after their death as well.
3:55 Prior to this, the test subject guy actually rightly predicts what was on the card. A couple of "wavy lines." Peter actually gets the result this test is looking to get. But he can't see it because he'd rather focus on the flirting than the test at hand. 10:40 The car cost them $4,800 in 1984 which now, because of inflation, is $12,151 in 2021. So you can understand seeing Peter's reaction to that price quote. And that isn't even mentioning the cost of all of the many alterations and repairs they had to put into the car. 11:38 If you look and listen real closely, you can see and hear Bill Murray just barely clear the hurdling of the swinging door. Any closer and he might've been seriously hurt. 12:21 Those personalities and character traits translate over flawlessly to their animated counterparts. That is what makes the cartoon so freaking good, especially the syndicated, network episodes. 12:57 That thing he is using is to detect odorless gas trails. 16:24 The reaction from the cleaning lady actress is genuine. The actress didn't know that much pyrotechnics were laced on the cart. Also, the movie crew were supposed to count down to the explosion, but they forewent that in order to garner a real looking reaction. When she says "What the hell are you doing," she was actually reprimanding the special effects guys. 16:49 The ghost homage to John Belushi, specifically his character Bluto from Animal House. He was supposed to play Peter, but he tragically died before the movie had started pre-production. 17:36 This is the first usage of the verbiage "Slimed." Before this movie, the word "slime" was only ever just a noun. Funny how a simple word change can alter the popular lexicon. 20:28 "Mommy...Daddy, why is the zipper going down by itself?" 25:42 This scene goes to show that Peter isn't a creeper. He actually shows great restraint and concern here for Dana. He is tempted, no doubt, but he overcomes it. He knows it wouldn't be right. 26:25 That voice is actually the director's own altered voice. 29:11 Peter is being very uncharacteristically responsible here. Maybe he learned a thing or two from his encounter with Zuul? 31:16 Carl Winslow (Reginald VelJohnson) cameo FTW! 34:09 "Go 'get her,' Ray" A callback to Ray's plan with the librarian ghost. I love a good callback joke. 35:02 At one point, Gozer was written to be played by Paul Reubens in his "Pee-Wee Herman" persona. Cooler heads prevailed, fortunately enough. 35:38 The acting and facial expressions here are superb. It is a prime example that you should always respect your audience's intelligence. In today's movies, you would get this long and loud sequence of characters talking and yelling to try and explain to the audience how they should react to seeing Ray's flub up. Here, none of the Ghostbusters have to even utter a word to express their realization that Ray is to blame for the choice. Their faces tell it all without the need for an explanation. 36:00 Who knew that the mascot of a corporate conglomerate would be the harbinger of the end times...

Winston: The everyman. he provides them with what they lack - grounded perspective. Yes in cannon, he got a doctorate in what we believe is, in Egyptian mythology and archeology, which will further provide further diversity as none of the other Ghosbusters have this type of expertise and ghosts come from all walks of the Earth. This wasn't in any of the two movies but sort of mentioned in the 2009 video game which IS CANNON in the universe.
The external shots of Dana's apartment are an actual location at 55 Central Park West. The top of the building is a little different in real life. There's actually a glass enclosed apartment on the roof..
You may have noticed the cartoon was called The "Real" Ghostbusters. That's because there was some legal terrible worth an older TV series called Ghostbusters, which was very different and included a gorilla in the cast. As soon as the movie got popular they made a cartoon based on that other TV show.
So the original cast for Ghostbusters was supposed to be Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy and John Belushi. When Belushi died he had to rewrite the script with Harold Ramis and changed a few things. However Slimer is supposed to have the look and represent Belushi for a tribute.

I was ten when it came out. Whole family went to see it and I think they thought it would be okay for kids. Not quite (thank you, Ms. Weaver). Still one of my favourite films!
Check out the cast: Dan Akroyd in The Great Outdoors Bill Murray in Caddyshack Rick Moranis in Strange Brew William Atherton in Die Hard 2 Sigourney Weaver in Alien(4): Resurrection Also, Indiana Jones 👍
I love how Egon uses his fingers to surreptitiously tell Peter how much to charge the hotel manager. This movie is from the mid 80's. It's not exactly archaic like The Maltese Falcon. Also, how did you not know Sigourney Weaver was in this? It was right there in the opening credits. 🤦♂️
As you’re a fan of the movie, do yourself a favor and pick up the Ghostbusters video game for Xbox/PlayStation/Switch, before the release of Afterlife, it was considered the unofficial third movie, it was written by Ackroyd and Ramis, and was the last time Harold Ramis voiced Egon before his passing. It stars most of the original voice cast, with the exception of Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis, and it’s one of those rare licensed games that doesn’t suck.
Love it man! You put out such awesome content. Some reactions seem forced and over the top but your reactions seem very genuine which is refreshing! I love how you get so invested in the movies you watch. Keep up the awesome work!
Based on his fairly deadpan reaction to everything and the fact that he apparently had ketamine with him when he arrived for his date with Dana, I've come to the conclusion that Venkman is on tranquilizers 24/7.
alright dude.. you are a honorary member of Gen X..every response you had was the same as I had in 1984 at the drive-in theater. OMG you born too late. You would have loved living in the 80s!!!!
You're Canadian? I never would've guessed. "Watch it, buhys. The ghosts are breaking oot." ;) I'm a yes for Ghostbusters 2. Not as good as the original imo but definitely worth a watch. Don't bother with the 2016 reboot. It's awful.
He's a Newfie (from the province of Newfoundland) which originally had a large Irish settlement in the 19th century I believe (among others), so you'll often find an accent is a sort of odd mixture of Irish and... other, lol.
The original & best. That written, if I could visit alternate Earths, one of the main ones would be where John Belushi either DIDN'T die of ODing, or died at a later date. Reason being simple: HE was supposed to be the original Peter Venkman. I always wonder what how different Ghostbusters would've been, had he been in the role, as originally intended.
Great reaction! Such a good movie! I actually saw it a few times in the theater as a kid. The second one is enjoyable, but IMO the story isn't nearly as good. I did not like the 2016 reboot at all. Looking forward to new one though.
The stop motion animation wasn’t the best because the entire movie was written, shot, and finished in only ten months. The effects didn’t really have the time needed to be finished properly, but it’s still an amazing looking film for its time, and the story and writing are simply amazing.
Just imagine what the new movie will look like now that they have had so much time to work on and perfect it. Can't wait for this pandemic to end so we can finally see it.
@@gokaury Yeah, my only concern though is that it still won't have the same comedic spirit that this movie has (or even the second one, despite it's terrible story). Especially since it's going to be centered around young kids. The best part of this movie is the comedic tone and the character relationships between the 4 of them & the supporting cast. The good part though is that with Ivan's son at the helm, I do honestly believe it will be much closer in the overall tone than the horrible 2016 version did and have a good balance between light horror & fun comedy. I just hope the comedy is much less "in your face" and facile than 2016 was.

As fun as the movie is they basically had no chance of beating Gozer so they win because this "god" basically got bored and ran off being like "I'm bored, choose your own method of destruction which would be easier to beat than I would be. CYA." The problem with needing to introduce such a big bad then making the big bad TOO big so they had to write out some BS resolution.

Egon: The mind of the Ghosbusters. He is of course the reason they can do what they do.
Yeah that's pretty great. Haha what a good character.
Love GhostbustersII just as much as the first one. Dana, Jeannine and Louis are back and it's another fun goofy ride.
Absolutely!! Ghostbusters 2 next... Love your videos!
The external shots of Dana's apartment are an actual location at 55 Central Park West. The top of the building is a little different in real life. There's actually a glass enclosed apartment on the roof..
You have just witnessed my all time favorite movie!
Sometimes, crude special effects are used on purpose to make things seem surreal. Also, they're funny, and Ghostbusters is a comedy. CGI wasn't fully developed yet and wasn't used on "Ghostbusters", but there were more sophisticated special effects available, and what does a ghost or supernatural demon look like anyway?
you should try Honey i shrunk the kids With Rick Moranis
Yes I should!
It's a kid's movie.
@@tempsitch5632 so whats wrong with kids movies?
@@DarnHooligan Everything, if you're an adult.
@@tempsitch5632 lmfao adults watch kids movies as well
what are you some 7 year old trying to act all mature?
Apropos of nothing, my ancestors were Acadians from Yarmouth, NS (or more specifically a tiny village called Belleville).
you can see the stay puft marshmallows next to the eggs. the influence was clearly the michelin man
Dimensional fridges bringing you alternate reality’s since 1901 lol
Never seen your channel before but I love reactions to great movies, and this is literally my favorite film of all time.
Ever wonder where Pete pulls that number out from regarding the first payment for capturing slimer, the $4000..? Watch very closely at 19:30..
i gotta give u props due..first thing this Gen X guy thought was "Who has to put those cards back in order to keep the Dewey Decimal system in place?". lmao you get it. love to see younger people understand what's going on.
no mockumentary type movies here yet
*WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS* a fake reality show of four vampyre flatmates. It´s awesomely filmed and directed.
And it´s crazy and funny as f*.
Old video I know, but maybe you'll see this.. if you haven't seen "What About Bob?", it's another movie starring Bill Murray. It's one of my favorites. It has Richard Dreyfuss as well. It's funny!
Saw this one in the theater when it came out
The most unrealistic part of this movie is how much power the EPA has. 🤣
I was ten when it came out. Whole family went to see it and I think they thought it would be okay for kids. Not quite (thank you, Ms. Weaver). Still one of my favourite films!
I loved this reaction. Thank you for the enjoyable (re-)watch of Ghostbusters. Such a classic! :D
Glad you enjoyed it! Such a great film!
Check out the cast:
Dan Akroyd in The Great Outdoors
Bill Murray in Caddyshack
Rick Moranis in Strange Brew
William Atherton in Die Hard 2
Sigourney Weaver in Alien(4): Resurrection
Also, Indiana Jones 👍
9:25 - Never change, Rick Moranis.
Ghostbusters is so special.. should be in a museum... un related but the latest one made me cry...
Yes definitely react to Ghostbusters 2, all 7 cast members returned for it. The first one is a true classic, so quotable.
"They're gonna be popular now after they save the city..."
Weeeeeelll...
"I got a feeling it's Slimer.... (shows librarian ghost instead) Ohhh it's a ghost."
Well... like... the name of the movie... lol
The ghosts are breaking oot." ;)
I'm a yes for Ghostbusters 2. Not as good as the original imo but definitely worth a watch. Don't bother with the 2016 reboot. It's awful.
He's a Newfie (from the province of Newfoundland) which originally had a large Irish settlement in the 19th century I believe (among others), so you'll often find an accent is a sort of odd mixture of Irish and... other, lol.
Ghostbusters is special.
When somebody asks if you're a god, you say YES!
this is a fun take 1st person Ive seen who had the cartoon and snl under his belt
It would have definitely been a very different film.
Originally Dan Aykroyd had John Belushi in mind for the part of Peter Venkman. Of course it was not to be.

Technically, they weren't Ghostbusters yet.
More like, Ghost investigators.
They hadn't even built the proton packs or traps yet.
This is a fun movie, my Nana took me to see it when I was a kid.👻😸
I feel like your the Canadian Charlie Day and now I can't unsee it! Great reaction. New sub!
Thanks for the sub!
Great reaction! Such a good movie! I actually saw it a few times in the theater as a kid. The second one is enjoyable, but IMO the story isn't nearly as good. I did not like the 2016 reboot at all. Looking forward to new one though.
New sub mate! 👍
Hey der Nova Scotia from Thunder Bay 🇨🇦
It sounds rude for him to ask if she's menstruating, but hormonal changes can increase the chances of mental illness. So a woman going through menopause who then experiences stress or even grief can lead to psychosis. And as she said, psychosis has occurred in her uncle so it isn't entirely ruled out
Heck, just being old can lead to Charles Bonnet Syndrome which is characterized by hallucinations
It's very personal, but that's kind of how medical questions tend to be. Just donating blood they ask about aspects of sexual history
If she had answered in the negative to all of these questions that would rule out psychosis (unless she was lying, but she could also be perfectly sane and lying so that's a matter of research vigilance)
@8:10 Fun Fact: the building they filmed the firehouse interiors has been condemned. ....it might have been at the time, but I walk past it often. It's in the worst neighbor in the world.
P.S. Community ?
"Why's there an alternate reality in her fridge !?"
Warranty ran out.
A grown man who's never seen ghostbusters. I don't want to live on this planet anymore.
It's Ghost friggin' Busters!

"Aim for the flat top!!!"
omg dude! u r Gen X in the wrong time period. You are spooking me with your reactions being EXACTLY what I had in 1984!. You rule!
31:16 It's Al Powell from Die Hard!
The guy who plays Peck was also in Die Hard as the TV reporter.
That library scene used to scare me...
It's not a Gargoyle. A Gargoyle is a very specific thing. It's a grotesque figure that is used to channel water.
To gargle is the same.
A Gargoyle is for water. I means nothn else
Yes Ghostbusters 2 next 😁
The official third movie is coming out hopefully December. Very much looking forward to that.
As am I! Can't wait!
I used to watch the cartoons too! Slimer was the best. Remember ecto cooler?
I just googled Ecto Cooler. Nope that' wasn't available on the tiny Canadian island I grew up on. But it looks awesome. Haha
@@NewfieMovieReactions Once the new movie comes out, they will inevitably release it again. I've heard of people who have mixed it with Dan Aykroyd's Crystal Head Vodka.
There was no cgi in the 80’s. All special effects and stop motion
"Tell em about the Twinkie..."
No CGI just puppets, rubber suits and stop motion animation.
No CG back then, it was all stop motion.
I always hate it when my eggs fry themselves on the counter…
Dude I love you but where have you been to not see all these classics 😂❤️
I watched the GB cartoon as a kid. But I neve watched movies as a kid, I was always out playing in the woods, sports, video games or tabletop role playing games. Basically the only thing I watched was SNL, Letterman, and the Simpsons. haha
I love these videos :D
Murray and Accroit are so great actors!
I was 10 years old when it was shown in our cinemas. So was not allowed to see him there. Too young 😢 but made up for it as a teenager, of course. It's kind of a cult of the 80s. Everyone knows the Ghostbusters 👻 🔫 ❤ (I even have a carneval group that goes along with the parade as Ghostbusters 😄)
May I ask how old you are? Sorry, curiosity.
In the video you mention that you live in nova scotia. So beautiful ❤. A while ago I was watching the series HAVEN (2010) which was filmed there. I said to my husbund: I ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO GO THERE 🤗😄
Sorry for the long text. You are a nice guy!!

$5000 in 1984 is $15,000 today
As fun as the movie is they basically had no chance of beating Gozer so they win because this "god" basically got bored and ran off being like "I'm bored, choose your own method of destruction which would be easier to beat than I would be. CYA." The problem with needing to introduce such a big bad then making the big bad TOO big so they had to write out some BS resolution.
Great reaction! Can't wait for you to watch Ghostbusters 2 (it's as good as first one, if not better).
@sbvintagecollector44 Maybe it's because I first say second movie, then the first one. So the second movie made more of an impression on me.
