Gotta agree with the 120. Looks great. Adam Savage has the same sort of story with labeling his tools. It's always fun hear about the types of habits that just exist throughout an industry.
I am glad to know I am not the only one who doesn't see i am doing something wrong till after the fact. Everything you do is a learning experience even if sometimes it is not how to do something. Keep up the great work!🎉
Aaaah, now *this* is my jam indeed :) Loving the setup :) Built a mini-version of this a couple of months ago, using an old metal pipe from my (linen)closet cut in half for the tracks, and used the bearings from *inside* the roller skate wheels I sell i my shop directly on the metal track (which is super smooth) to keep the platform small. The trick I used to align the wheels (or bearing mounts in my case) was to use the tracks to align the two sets of wheels. Another trick I’ve been using is using the drill / screwdriver as a motor to pull the dolly. Some drills have variable speed control on the trigger, so using a tiny pistol grip clamp on the trigger I can set it to barely push on the trigger - then I just wired the contacts of the battery to the contacts of the drill with a switch in between to easily turn it on and off, the drill is more than powerful enough to pull the dolly and putting a bolt in the drill chick with some nuts holding some washers the thread will be kept inside of the washers while the drill sloowly pulls the carriage along (it must be strapped to a plate and weighed down of secured to not move of course). but that gives you a steady speed and repeatable shots :) Currently I’m trying to see if it’s repeatable enough to shoot miniature house/city models with different passes on lighting and effects/movement to composite into one shot, will post a video about it on my channel if it works, if not I’ll just post a vid about the slider :)
Ah very interesting! I hadn’t thought of using a drill to pull it. Hurry up and post your video so I can see how to rig the pulling mechanism up lol!! 😂🍻
Ah, the lovely days of yore when I didn't think of my knees at all. They were just a thing that was there and would get bruised from time to time, as they should. Also, I would never call you a square, so I guess that you're not square in this case, which is... good? As for the rig, I mean, they always say if you want something done right, just do it yourself! Good job Sir, good job indeed. 😁
Have you ever seen something happen that was just out of your reach and you just had to watch it happen. God I wish I lived near you I have so many tools and ideas and have Magivered so many things, and what you're doing sound like such a blast. I turn 59 in a couple of days, and I am chomping at the bit, if you know what I mean. One more thing before I admit I might be getting.....older. OK I said it, and it did not feel good. Love your videos, for some reason.
Lol someone somewhere said we’re only as old as we think we are (except for knees, those just get old). Well, wish I could collab on some of these things myself lol. 🍻
Flashback! I worked a rig not too different from what you built when I was helping out on a short film set maybe a decade back. The director (writer, producer, etc.) had already built it, so I didn't have to. Thankfully. I'm all thumbs. I just had the fun part of trying to make it move at a nice, uniform speed. His wasn't quite so fancy. I think he may have just stood a tripod on the platform. But it got the job done. It was all for an interior office scene anyway.
Yeah, trying to get a smooth uniform speed move is kinda tricky! When I originally built a similar rig it was to do exactly what you described, to put a tripod on the platform and roll it through an interior space lol. 🤙🍻
Saturday morning and my morning started out right. I just started laughing and remembering the construction of flats and other back ground pieces for plays in high school, college and some of the other theatre groups I was mixed up in. Besides being a "Sound Guy" as I was called a lot. I would help out with construction of scenery. Many of the flats I helped put together we would set them on tracks to be pushed back and forth forth. The wheels used were very similar to what you were using. There were times I would be needed put push some of the scenery around. As one of the bigger guys 6'4" tall. I would be asked to help move stuff around. Many times I was told to stay low as I would be yelled at for getting in the scene. LOL! Oh the good old days of youth.
Lol what’s that floating head back there in the shadows?! Live theater, I’ve only done that a couple times, definitely has that weird and wonderful “rush”and once you do it you know exactly why the phrase “the show must go on” was coined.😂🍻
You can get galvanized steel metal fence post pipes at home depot for far cheaper, around $32 for 8' length. I am enjoying this series of videos btw, getting an inside look into the movie business is great. Thanks for sharing.
That bit where you feel you are going around in circles and things are repeating. I've had similiar thoughts and now view the going around in circles thing as a rather a 2D perspective. If you step back and look at the experience in 3D, it's actually a spiral. So, yes, you are still repeating things but you are also moving forward and closer to some ultimate centre point. My head hurts. It's still early in the UK now! Good work. One day I will have a very random reason to refer back to this video!
If you want to save a few bucks you can buy some wooden dowels that will fit snugly inside the PVC. Glue it in place with a little acetone or sealing caulk. Makes it very rigid. You'd know more about this stuff than me, but maybe you'll save a few bucks for something else
wierd... the tool closet is where i keep my linens. not joking either i actually keep all my towels and things IN the same closet where my fancy power tools live.
Starting to think we may be long lost twins, age - check, bad knees - check, living down the road from where I used to years ago - check, don't believe a square is square - check, keep my tools in the linen closet (or airing cupboard as we call it in the UK) - check, angry ex - check. Remember Necessity is the mother of invention, in the Evil Dead for the scene were the camera moves up and over Ash's car, Sam Raimi couldn't afford a Louma Crane so he got 2 friends to hold a bamboo pole with the camera strapped to the middle. I'm loving these videos, I really hope you get the funding.
Lol let’s do the real check: do we both appreciate a good beer (or as we call it now, bad back medicine)? I do remember that story of that particular camera move, yep, sometimes you just gotta do the thing. 🍻🏴☠️
@@tabletopalchemy I was enjoying a good German Pils when I wrote it. Yes it was only 8am in the UK, don't judge, I had just finished a night shift and was waiting for my copy of Hive Secundus.
EMT conduit or Rigid/ IMC conduit (Lowes/ Home depot) they come in 10ft length def cheaper. Rigid conduit may be harder to find in sizes other than 3/4" or 2"
The YT channel Ave talks about 'fabri-cobbling' and I like that term. But this video reminds me of a GW game from last century called Morka-Gorka. [Yeah, come at me fan boys] In that game if your Saw Bones wanted to put a mono-stabilised wheel on an injured orc buddy [and who wouldn't want that?] the player had to roll a 6 on a d6 and in doing so, proclaim - Job's a good-n. So, you rolled a 6 and jobs a good-n!
@@tabletopalchemy What about a synthetic body made of hydraulic carbon nanotube muscles and a crystalline brain that uses photons for processing rather than bits? 😁

Agreed, it’s the small details that make stuff interesting lol. 🤙🍻
Straight up, nothing like a bit of philosophy to go with DIY. 😎
Can’t stop it lol🖤

Excellent DIY dolly , used to have a kit one many many years ago when I made stuff. Your ability to adapt is admirable and impressive 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Much moreso than my ability to stand up 🤣🤙🍻
Nice dolly! Can’t wait to get the shots! ⚔️🎥

Maybe a couple more sandbags to lay the track on to counter any rough ground where you set up?
