I love the travelling embroidery updates! If possible, you might add more about where you are geographically in each new place, and explain what's special about it. What's it like to settle into new housewares, shop for essentials, and get used to the basic routines of life in a constantly changing place, etc.? 🦋
Hey Cathy, its so amazing to see you on this adventure, you seem even more energetic and alive! I heard of a woman years ago whose husband passed away and with her kids fully grown she decided to do the same thing. she sold her home and (I was shocked when I learned this) She lives on a ship, the staff on board knows her and always makes sure her room is ready when she returns on board and she spends six months out at sea and when the cruise line is over she stays at private cabins and other places that's just near nature until it's time to return. At the time I was told this story, this woman had been doing it for 8 years.
If you get a chance to check out the local crafters or museums, to see what that area is known for. It would be interesting to see. Whether that has lace, quilting, clothes or it could be something totally different from what you are doing like ceramics. Thank you for sharing your journey!
Could you take us on a walk and show us the places you are living in? Not necessarily the apartment, but the place around, what did you like, what little special places did you discover (a corner of a garden, a view, a bakery that makes the best scones)... so we can share the traveling with you?
I have so much admiration for you being so brave to do this. I've moved country three times but always to a friend or with family. I tried to go away on holiday on my own for a week and lasted less than 24 hours. It was awful. I've no idea how to enjoy things on my own when I'm not working. I'd love to hear what is behind your decision to move to the land of no healthcare and why Colorado specifically? And how do you manage socially while moving around so much?
No matter the type of video your making Miss Cathy, they are so good to watch. Enjoy your adventures and do what is best for you. I am enjoying watching your current project piece come to life.
Love seeing the towns you visit and the work you are doing and always excited to see your progress. You should be so proud. Love this and want to be able to also.
I’d love to hear about embroidery stitches that are useful to a dressmaker. I still remember those magnificent hook and eyes you demonstrated a year or two ago. The other information I would find interesting is translating a pattern of yesteryear to something useful today. Have fun on your travels.❤
I have lived in Colorado my whole life. It such a wonderful state. You have the all seasons here and it is just beautiful. I have travel and got to have each one of the seasons but it's so nice that you get a like of each here. I have loved watching you work on your stitch work. It is amazing. Look forward to have you in my backyard in a since.
I love that you are bringing us along on this adventure with you. I have enjoyed seeing not only your progress with the Project but also with your travels. You have been in some seriously wonderful places. This armchair traveler appreciates being able to see more of the world - thank you! What to see in the videos is a bit of a quandary. I love watching your hand work but I also recognize that there is a limitation of attention with same. I guess it depends upon how long you want the videos to be. I am up for whatever you offer. Looking forward to the next adventure!
This is so good to see, i dont want this to come off as rude, quite the opposite actually i hope its a compliment. There are so many 20 year olds (including myself a few years ago) that feel like they have to run around travelling, backpacking and van life because as soon as you start to settle in a house with family you can no longer do that. Which isnt the case as you are showcasing, it brings me a sense of calm that i wont miss out because i didnt backpack round columbia. There is always time later in lige to pursue such things
What an adventure! I hope to be able to do that one day as well. You experience a place so differently when you actually settle there and live there for a few weeks vs just visiting for a week. Don't forget, you have fans all around the world where you're staying and who'd love to show you around. Don't be shy!
The accommodations you make for yourself in different spaces would be interesting to watch and instructive in setting up or rearranging a room used for sewing and crafts.
I never questioned why you were travelling, it just seemed like one of those things where the opportunity or idea presented itself, and you just have to grab it with both hands and see where it takes you. The changes in scenery certainly add an interesting dynamic to your videos. Many people dream about travelling, and perhaps go on the occasional trip, but you've made it your life, or at least this part of your life. You deserve to chase your dreams as much as anyone else, and if it makes you happy then why not!
Funny you mentioned the issue with the dedicated work space. We noticed the exact same thing. We also travel around currently and work remotely, but in our own country only. (I think I was actually inspired by you to bring the idea up 😄.) But it’s really hard to find places with a good place to work at. They always seem to maximize for beds so as many people as possible could be cramped in there during a vacation. Most people offering those places aren't really ready for this lifestyle...yet 😅.
Hi Cathy, I would absolutely love a video where you actually talk about the numbers of this project, in terms of work hours and material costs. I know TH-camrs are often loathe to talk about how much things cost because it seems outside of their viewers’ budget and experience, but I think people would understand that these costs are part of your business budget as a content creator. As a professional dressmaker I find people very rarely have a true idea of the time and cost involved in a luxury project so I think it would be great to have an honest and open chat about that. X
Thank you for this video. I always wondered why you were giving up your home in England. My father's side of the family (the only family I knew) were from Colorado and as a child, my sister and I always spent summers with our grandparents and cousins. Beautiful state (so long as you are nearer the Rockies and not the plains part of the state). Hope you can cope with not having the NHS, and have to pay for health care. My passion is needlework and I LOVE watching you do the embroidery on this velvet coat. Am looking forward to seeing more progress on this lovely garment and where you will be lodging next!
I hope the vetting process doesn't take forever. Those folks sometimes drag their feet. As for me. I'm in North Carolina but have friends in Colorado. I say you do whatever makes you happy in all your life.
i'm probably not the target audience for this video, but i just love seeing the process and those beautiful shots of where you're currently at! you've probably got your places all planned out, but if not there are some lovely places in Maine to go- lots of small towns out near the sea, and they're especially beautiful when you get further north
I find people who constantly move are running from some inner unsettled emotions. Moving acts as a distraction. Eventually you get tired of running and go back to a settled space. New is nice to visit but not a way of life unless you really want to be alone. Alone not lonely. Hope you find peace and fulfillment!
I’d love to actually get to see some of the area you’re in whenever you move. Next time you’re in Colorado I highly recommend looking into going to Pagosa Springs in south Colorado. Yes it’s a tourist trap, but it’s a town full of natural hot springs and it is beautiful. I’ve been twice, if it’s still open, I’d recommend the springs resort for the hot springs, open air, and they have a quieter adults only section if you like, that’s extra though.
Hi Cathy. Love seeing you just do what you love and talking about it. That makes me happy. However, I am curious to learn more about how you put your work routine together and how you have to adapt and how you do that successfully when moving regularly.
Hello, Cathy-I am a recently widowed lady, living in the mountains of North Carolina. Although I teach a couple of college English classes, my true love is art. When time permits, I spend time at my easel (mostly acrylics and oils), which has been the most effective (and least costly) form of therapy imaginable. Watching you work at your craft and listening to you speak through the process is absolutely inspiring for me. I wish you great success and joy in your new life in Colorado. And now I have a question. Do you think you’d ever be interested in reproducing a ladies outfit from the 1920s, complete with a lightweight motoring coat? I must’ve lived a previous during that time because when I search my closet for something to wear-something that would truly suit the woman I feel inside-I wish I had a closet full of dresses from that era.
Happy travels, Cathy, and happy moving eventually! Hoping it all goes smoothly. 🤞🏻❤️ As for videos… I have enjoyed all of yours! I return to the motivational ones often. The sewing too and the progress on the embroidered coat are interesting. I think it may be best to make videos that interest yourself and keep fanning the flames that way? Best wishes, Lynne
Hi Cathy, first of all thank you for the opportunity to witness your journey in a way that I can almost feel your struggles and your joy as if it was me in your situation. I’d love if you shared more about the way that some places that you’ve been staying affected your creativity, motivation on your work and overall mood. How does it feel after the the “newness” of the first week? Thank you so much!
Hi, I can't really travel at the moment so seeing your travels and the coat process is lovely, I'm going for surgery soon and I won't be able to lift more than a cup of tea for 6 weeks 😂it's better than last year when I was in an induced coma for 5 weeks, so safe travels and I look forward to seeing what you do. ❤
Your comment about feeling "un-settled" as in not settled down anymore got me thinking about my ancestors' lifestyle. Way back when, all humans lived a nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyle. I wonder: Did they need the feeling of being "settled" regardless? Of being connected and anchored? If so, what gave them that feeling and assumed security? Probably their community or tribe. People didn't migrate on their own back then. At least I don't think so. My heart is singing when I see people living this kind of modern-nomadic lifestyle. At the same time, my head is asking: is it safe? Where do you land when you move? How do you know there'll be a safe place to stay? Cathy, I'd love to hear about your experiences (if your're willing to share of course) or tipps about choosing and securing your accomodations and traveling? Did you have to trouble-shoot in the past 8 months? I'm also curious about if and how you connected to the communiy or neighbours at the places you lived. Is that something important to you? If your're willing to share, I'd really, really like to know how you're staying "rooted" without having a permament home. If that is an issue for you at all. Thanks so much for letting us observe your journey! 🙏
YAY! The YT algorithm hates me, I haven't seen your content in months! Yay! Sorry to make hay about your post, Cathy!ALSO YOU ARE MOVING TO MY STATE! HECKING AWESOME
I loved your talk today, but was disappointed that we didn't even get to see more of the velvet. I wish that you had stitched whilst talking, instead of just holding a cup of tea. ... I really came for stitching. And to see that you are doing well. 💖🌞🌵😷
Hi Suzi, this was filmed the same day as the last video, but seemed too much when added onto it, so I released it as an extra since it's not about the sewing. It demonstrates that I do take breaks sometimes. 😀
I love seeing the new places but somehow, it doesn’t seem enough… ahah! You can show us a bit more about where you are, your setup, why you picked that place and showing it, etc … I would like it for sure. i don’t get bored of seeing the embroideries, even if it looks the same for you, for the amount of time we see it on video on our end, it is not too much for sure :) I had this idea in mind, to travel like you do at retirement but my idea of travelling was to switch places every 2-3 months to kind of be able to really enjoy the place, discover the shops, coffee shops, places to walk … enjoy the life in the surroundings and not move to often as it drains energy, adds lots of stress to coordinate the move and travelling itself. So, maybe you can stay a bit longer everywhere you go and enjoy more before starting over if you start feeling exhausted of moving too often at some point. :)
You are a woman braver than I. I have to have my "place"! I need that for stability. When I travel, I may love a place, but there is no place like home for me!
Hi Cathy, great to see you traveling around solo, you’ve inspired me 🙌🏼 it’d be great to hear more about your work and how you manage it on your travels, I’m self employed as well and contemplating going on the move at bit so further inspiration would be just mighty. Thanks, Mairéad
I'm a craft brewery owner, brewing and selling craft beer is my main business. But I'm also a seamstress with 25yrs experience and mom of 2 toddlers, so time is a big problem for me. I wanted to share my sewing/knitting projects on youtube for some time but I don't want to invest too much, neithet do I want for it to look "homemade". Woyld you share your filming/editing routine and setup with us please, as I imagine it to be professionnal but yet minimalistic! Thanks a lot and please continue doing what you do! I'm 38, you are such an inspiration! ❤
I went on a similar journey but found the constant traveling inhibited my creativity so much. Now that I’m more settled, it’s flowing again. I’m curious how your practice will shift when you get settled again. There’s always pros and cons 😂
Watching you move around is so fun! Just proves you don't need a huge dedicated space with lots of stuff to be productive! We own a rental down in Florida on the Nature Coast...definitely hit me up if your interested in a location on a Florida spring near the Gulf! ❤
Your story is just proof everyone is different. There is no one size fits all. For me I want land more than an hour from the nearest town. I do like to tour other parts of the world, but I prefer home. But you seem very happy as you are doing the opposite of me.
Might I suggest stuffing a pillowcase with socks and placing it at the base of the spine. Angles the knees and pelvis to the floor and takes pressure off the lower back. Also, I have a question about measurements. How do you like up the ruler? Where is the right place to make the mark? Do you make your mark at the bottom of the line, the middle, or the top? Could you demonstrate this? How do you keep consistent measurements and not add a millimeter here or subtract a couple millimeters there?
I love what you’re doing, so much fun. I would love to learn about attractions / nature walks/ museums/ historic houses in the areas you are staying to give me an idea of things I would like to see when I visit the UK. Since you are traveling to the US more, please come to the historic triangle of Jamestown, Yorktown, Williamsburg. I think you would really enjoy it here, and if you want to host an event….I think I have just the person to help you with the logistics, me 😂
I get that about routines and place. I’m even reminding myself to use the whole house and yard. I dream of doing things outside more but just don’t. Lately I’m making the effort to take work the back yard or the deck. It is lovely when i take the time. Where in Colorado are you headed? Near the fire guy?
I’m super new to your Chanel, but I was struck by your personality and I watch you videos to relax and create my crochet. Do you visit anywhere when you travel or just stay at the BnB? I’d love to see more of your adventures
Have you decided on a particular part of Colorado? Have you traveled through Colorado much besides the Durango area? I've lived in 5 states and visited 47 states and a bit of Canada...in 1980 I made Colorado my home. Last night it was 8 degrees F or -13 C. But I live at 8,500 feet elevation or 2590.8 meters elevation. And yes we have some snow today.
I may be all wrong, however, I believe that you should make the video's any way that feels 'right' for you. I'm happy you are enjoying your frequent moves and see adventure and excitement in each move........I love to travel but I Need the security of having my home-base where all my Stuff lives. It's not my life so I don't judge you. Be happy in all you do and I will enjoy your videos regardless. You decide and I'll follow along or I can choose not to, but you enjoy being you and do what makes you happy.
Maybe not the answer you are expecting, but... you shouldn'tbe trying to make videos FOR us... So, I like to sew some things here and there, but I don't like historical garments, I barely wear a skirt anymore, definitely not a long skirt... but I still watched all your victorian skirts videos... not as much because I wanted to learn, but because I like your videos.. I really like the way you make your videos, the passion that I can feel when you talk about something you like, and the takes, the music, all of it. So I would be very happy to watch a video of where you are staying, what you are eating or whatever you like, what's yous day or just your embroidering talking about something you want to talk about
Hi, I just found your channel, this is the second video I watch. You are really brave! I lived a similar life years ago, traveling abroad for work. I was in constant move, it was exciting! I enjoyed it so much! I enjoyed even more when some friends or family met me a few days in those places. Memories are better shared. Although, I cherished my time being alone and discovering things. I have some questions for you. I really would like to learn sewing and embroidery. I have some notions, a machine, I guess I need practice. I just want to create my own clothes because I am tired of synthetic, bad quality, dull, poorly made clothes. In the last 20 years there’s been a terrible decline in the textile and shoe industry quality. I am terrified of plastic shoes everywhere being sold for more than €100. It is not only that it is not possible if you have a family or you need to buy several pairs for the season, but the worst of it it is that contaminates the planet and we are losing our industry and artisans (not mentioning that some clothes are toxic). I just do not want to contribute to that, and I do not need that much clothes, actually. Fast fashion is a complete perversion, the highest expression of greed and I want to break that cycle. I know that it is more expensive to do them myself, but then the garments are good and last, so in the long run is cheaper. What is your advice to start making its own clothes? Are dresses and summer blouses the best pieces to start ? Thank you!
I've enjoyed seeing the places you've been even if there hasn't been much on it. Why Colorado though? Is that where you plan to settle or another stop on your path? It's beautiful there & I was sorely tempted to stay but I chose to stay in the PNW, not far from Seattle where I was born, & it was a long circle to get back!
@@CathyHay That's a good incentive! There's some beautiful places to see! We went on a TINY little one car road and on the overhang of rocks was a huge fossil! Pretty scary location but luckily we did not have to back up the way we came. There's also a huge hanging/suspended bridge, I got some beautiful pictures from getting out on it. The "road part" was all wood. Also a place that has protected animals there, my fave was a white buffalo. these places are all tucked into lesser known areas. I hope you can check some out. I wasn't much for flying over the Rockies but it's a stunning view! Wishing you some very happy times there!
You're looking so well! Loving this traveling series. If it's not too intrusive to ask: why the U.S? The healthcare costs alone would be enough to put me off. 🙈
It's great to see you enjoy yourself so much!! As for a question, you did mentioned moving to Colorado when all the paper work is done. With now having had this moving around lifestyle, some parallels with what some call the western modern nomad lifestyle, are you finding that you want this still for a much longer period of time? Is there a part/of things are you looking forward to when the paper work is done? Will you see how you feel when the paper work is done, or potentially even a plan to have a 'stable' homebase again, instead of uncomfy chairs frequently ;)
Dear Cathy, How brave of you to do what you do. Bless! I am sure it wasn't an easy decision, and certainly hope that your papers go through with flying colors. Where in Colorado did you choose to live? Was it a simple decision in realtion to perhaps seeing other states? I have cousin(s) that live in Colorado, as well as Wyoming. I've never been there, but was told by my Dad and hubby that they are beautiful. If the papers don't come through, would you settle in Derbyshire instead? I know it wouldn't compare to CO, but maybe the "feel" is there? And not to be nosy, even though I will be when I ask - did you get married? I noticed the ring in the last video, and wanted to ask then. If you are, congrats! I hope they realize how lucky they are! You can always tell me to "bugger" off as they say. LOL Looking forward to the next video of your journey and hope those papers come through for you! All the love and hugs, Jennifer
With all the moving, how much have you downsized? I know there was a ton of initial downsizing but did you go from like 5 suitcases to 3 from moving so many times? How has your food changed from place to place? Like are you more adventurous than before, eat similar stuff to have a feeling of stability, or is it the same as before you started travelling?
I know you are going back and forth between America and Britain. But have you considered visiting some cities in Europe as well on your nomadic journey? 😁
Hello Cathy, There is something I loved that you did at the begining of this serie and also on the previous one that could help keeping the videos more interessing. They are always interessing, don't get me wrong it's absolutly not what I'm sayin. What I mean it's "it would be a nice bonus". If your AirBnB is near by a museum that could relate to your domaine (sawing, historical pieces, ....) and you visit them, could you take us with you ? and show us a sneak peak of it and give us your feedback ?
Can I just ask very practically, what do you do if you have no comfortable chair and how do you deal with light issues? I am a knitter, and I have necklights, so I can use way more places, but what about you? And also, what I would like to know, have you calculated the footprint you are having? I am an ecologically conscious person and have given up air travel as much as possible, but how do you see this?.
Hi Verena, I take an angle poise lamp with me on the road. Chairs - I move around a lot - and footprint, I think, is a give and take issue. I am flying a lot now, granted, but I eat minimal meat, didn't drive until I was 30, haven't had a commute since 2003 and did it before that on public transport, and I don't own a vehicle in the US yet. Which is perhaps a justification, so I do take your point too. It isn't for ever. (Also a justification.)
As much attention as I pay to UK politics - America may specialise in messed up politics right now but it doesn't have a monopoly on it, unfortunately. Health care has been considered too.

I read about this a while back. In the long run it was cheaper for her to live on a ship then it was to keep up her house and household bills
I heard that! What a life!

I just assumed that you had decided to go on a grand adventure for this part of your life journey. I am finding it quite exciting. Enjoy!!!!

The United States has many beautiful places to explore & experience . We that watch you are happy for you.
Maybe explore some of the local craftspeople and their studios?

So excited for your move here to Colorado! I've lived here all my life and it is absolutley breathtaking. Also a lot of crafty folk out here 😊
I live in Colorado and love it here. Good luck on your move and welcome!
Do what you can to fulfill your happy cup.

More garden shots, please.
Love this topic of intentional routines. Such a valuable skill, and indeed travelling is a great time to practice it.
I went to the V&A in London yesterday and I saw your coat!
I’m from Colorado. I hope you enjoy living there!
I love your channel. I just might sign up for your class.
I’d like to see more sewing as you talk. Not boring!
Definitely, I'm feeling the inspiration but also the drawbacks - it's an energy drain aswell for sure!
Best of luck with the move.
When you get to Colorado some videos on how to winterize the clothes you already own would be nice.
Well done , Cat !!
Excellent and exciting way to spend your time!
I would love to hear about the people you meet!
Moving to CO?!?!? Yessssss!!! ❤ You'll be so close #fangirl 😂
Watching you move around is so fun! Just proves you don't need a huge dedicated space with lots of stuff to be productive! We own a rental down in Florida on the Nature Coast...definitely hit me up if your interested in a location on a Florida spring near the Gulf! ❤
Come to Canada!!!!
Thank you Laura - do you mean in the context of placing the embroidery pattern on the fabric?
@@CathyHay yes, when lining things up, how do you make sure the pattern is not shifting a little to one side or the other?
Lovely video
How are you finding living with just bare minimum but what you love? I love these updates.
Would buying a gel seat cushion that you can put in your luggage help with setting at a dinning chair for numerous hours?
Have you decided on a particular part of Colorado? Have you traveled through Colorado much besides the Durango area? I've lived in 5 states and visited 47 states and a bit of Canada...in 1980 I made Colorado my home. Last night it was 8 degrees F or -13 C. But I live at 8,500 feet elevation or 2590.8 meters elevation. And yes we have some snow today.
Yes, I have friends in the Durango area. Gosh you are well travelled in the US!
Thank you Sandy!
Thank you!
Do you enjoy checking out local markets, deli's, cafés and other eating places everywhere you go?
I've enjoyed seeing the places you've been even if there hasn't been much on it. Why Colorado though? Is that where you plan to settle or another stop on your path? It's beautiful there & I was sorely tempted to stay but I chose to stay in the PNW, not far from Seattle where I was born, & it was a long circle to get back!
I have friends there, to put it simply. :)
All good questions! I admit, I am looking forward to having a settled home again.
All the love and hugs,
Jennifer
With all the moving, how much have you downsized? I know there was a ton of initial downsizing but did you go from like 5 suitcases to 3 from moving so many times? How has your food changed from place to place? Like are you more adventurous than before, eat similar stuff to have a feeling of stability, or is it the same as before you started travelling?
These are great questions, thank you!
I know you are going back and forth between America and Britain. But have you considered visiting some cities in Europe as well on your nomadic journey? 😁
Hello Cathy,
There is something I loved that you did at the begining of this serie and also on the previous one that could help keeping the videos more interessing.
Since you speak french you should try living somewhere in the province of Quebec for a month or two.
I did visit Quebec City in 2001 or so and loved it!
Potential collaboration staying with @mappertonlive and their newly completed “fairy tale” cottage holiday let?
Im so sad you took down the videos from the Peacock dress I was looking for when you made the bussle pad but you took it down.
😀
If you’re in the United States, we should a dinner or supper together sometime? I’m in Omaha Nebraska.
Why Colorado? Just wondering ♥️
300 days of sunshine, lots of snow, and good friends. :)
@@CathyHay fantastic!!! Good on ya!
I wish you less stress than you are experiencing.
Birdy
Why are you leaving England? Why go to America?
I know you want to move to Colorado, but how much attention are you paying attention to the politics here? Have you figured out the health care piece?
As much attention as I pay to UK politics - America may specialise in messed up politics right now but it doesn't have a monopoly on it, unfortunately. Health care has been considered too.
@@CathyHay I now realiize that it was rude o me to ask. I apologize.
I’d like to know about that ring on your left hand 😀
