I've never seen Troye Sivan getting that deep and expressive. It's wonderful to see he growing as an artist in every piece of work he releases. I'm growing as an human being as well. I'm on tears.
You're made for the spotlight. I loved your songs from the first time I heard them, and I think you should keep going because you're going great.
He says so much with his face. So many subtleties in this video. The faces he makes or the way his voice changes when he says certain things, like the bitterness in "you reap what you sew," or where his gaze drifts in each scene, or when he glances up. I'm curious about all the subtle symbolism, like the rabbit, the mirror breaking, the alcohol, him falling into the pool and even just the aesthetic/visual choices that complement the song but also give clues and add to the story. To me, it's all these little details that make this song and music video such a beautiful and successful work of art.
This song is definitely about a strained relationship, but I think looking at each little piece separately opens up so many different possible stories. Like, it's easy to just jump to cheating, but I like exploring other ideas. Honestly, I feel like it could be a conversation with himself. However, I don't really care what the truth behind the lyrics is.

Some observations: The mirror falling and breaking behind him is possibly symbolic of a broken self-image? Also, there are two people sitting at the couch, the other person on the couch looks at Troy, and Troy looks longingly/curiously at the performer on the television, which almost makes me think that the 'he' in this song is someone famous/someone in the public eye.

I like the lyric “a stranger at home” because i think it has/can have two meanings. 1, the stranger is the guy Troye cheated with who’s now like an intruder in Troye and his partner’s home, like his presence and what happened can’t be ignored. And 2, the stranger at home would be the partner. It’s very common to compare a crumbling relationship to “lovers becoming strangers”.

Troye was rumored to have hooked up with someone in January-February (he did say to the guy that he had broken up with Jacob) and the entire troye stans had a melt down because they won't believe the break up 😂 and i don't think he cheated, I think he hooked up with someone after they broke up but he still wanted to be back with his ex if given the chance (when he wrote the song, which was months ago, lol) that's why this song doesn't sound apologetic, more like a plea for a relationship to go on. he's just explaining what led to his choices, that sleeping with someone else is easy compared to his complicated relationship with his ex but he's still inlove with his ex.

Troye had been rumored to have slept with someone else in Australia around January-February this year. according to the rumor, troye spilled that he's not in a relationship anymore and the guy he slept with talked to a friend about it which was then passed on as most gossips do. this rumor caused an outraged in the fandom back then because troye stans don't want to believe what they feared since last year, lol, they were in denial they broke up even if it's obvious (the final confirmation is when they spent the December holidays separately, Troye had finished his tour by November and it's not like they can't afford plane tickets, while they continue posting cryptic break up/heartbroken song titles in their instas after weeks of avoiding each other, they took vacation in one state at different times like one week apart, each with their own families and friends lol, they posts pics with their families, especially troye who couldn't seem to go by a day without a brother or his sister accompanying him as if comforting him while Jacob with his own set of friends, and troye had kept posting how he's going through a bad time in his life around that time). This song has been made a long time, probably before March this year? This isn’t about Troye cheating. It could seem that way as a clever writing choice for a relatable song BUT with the added symbolism, I don’t think it is and here are my thoughts:
Troye is talking about himself. He didn’t cheat to make it ok. He “went astray” and was a “stranger at home like some kind of freak” because he acted out to someone needing to figure things out. His relationship might have been in a bad spot because they were each going through things but it doesn’t mean anyone cheated. They were just having issues which is why he says that he’s still in love even though things haven’t been easy. The house being on fire and Troye being the only thing on fire (when they could have lit a house on fire) was symbolism. “This house” is not equating to a relationship. The house is Troye. The only people in the video were Troye and a shadowlike figure that looked like him. The mirror - “I cant even look at you”, fell on him and cut him up and made him bleed because he was the cause of his own pain. Now THE NEXT PART might not be correct BUT I’m going off of context clues here. MAAAYYYYBE Troye used drinking to cope with being alone. The reason I think that is because the glass he was drinking from. After the mirror fell on him, it shows a sequence of him dancing with blood on his face but the blood disappears and he still dances like a drunk person with the cup in his hands. This is because the mirror is a metaphor for his self inflicted pain. There is no actual blood, he’s just hurting but drunk. He can’t look at himself (the mirror is himself), he looks at the space next to his feet. The wood is warping and the lines distorting. Because he’s drunk and he doesn’t recognize himself anymore. “What’s left of the dance?” is what you ask when you want to know how long the things are going to happen. The stranger is himself. The smell on his hands could be alcohol. The rock in his throat could be because he’s sad at the fact that he’s drunk again. A hair on his coat could be Jacob’s and he’s sad that he only has remnants left behind of someone who is taking a break from him. Or the hair on his coat is a clever way of saying “hair of the dog” which is just more alcohol to cure a hangover. So he smells like alcohol again. Could be a reach lol BUT there’s not a ton of symbolism in the video so I’m going off of what I see and interpret. You wouldn’t bring some kind of freak stranger home to fool around with AND he’s sad and alone. He’ll reap what he sows because he’s the one acting like this and being a freak. Don’t feel bad for him being this way cause he’s feeling the pain of himself. NOW, I have NO IDEA about the one who “went away to find something to say.” The entire song could be to himself. Maybe the sober version of him went away to have an excuse for the version of himself that makes it easy for him. He’s still in love even with Jacob even though between his sober self and drunk self, it hasn’t been easy for his relationship. That’s about all I got here. TL;DR The song isn’t about cheating but about how Troye doesn’t like the version of himself that makes things easy to deal with. (Any EDITS are for missing words or something I guess)

This song narrates the tale of a romantic relationship that is rapidly meeting its demise. And the primary reason the relationship is in distress is because one of the partner’s misbehaved. It is apparent that said partner cheated. And now having realized this grave mistake, they are are basically doing all their best to mend the broken relationship.
