    Exactly what I was looking for, a comparison between the D750 and Z6 since those are the two that most closely compare (and since I currently have a D750). I did not find the video too long as I felt it was pretty thorough. I expected the sensor of the Z6 to be better than the D750 since it is 4 years newer technology, and battery life does not surprise me with mirrorless because you've got to power the EVF vs. the low power requirements of the traditional OVF in most DSLR's. Thank you for taking the time to do this, I look forward to seeing your review after you've shot with it professionally.

    Corrections:
    - Intro - description says "shot on z7" while it should be "shot on z6"
    - The Z6 high ISO samples in this video were with NR turned on. For the Z6 sample photos with NR set to off, please visit my website: www.photobyrichard.com/reviewbyrichard/nikon-z6-vs-d750-review/
    - I mentioned 2 million ISO, but it should be 200K

    Thanks a lot for such detailed review. I was exactly looking for the same. While the most of the reviews in the TH-cam seemed to more commercial promoting the Z6, but I found yours to be truly helpful.
    I loved that instead of pointing out commercial aspects, you pointed out the real world differences instead of keeping out theorical.
    Such as, high ISO performance. But as you mentioned in real world no one would shoot on those crazy High ISO's. So that's something "on paper".
    Loved the difference of Dynamic Range that you explained. Again, no one would deliberately underexpose 6 stops, but I loved the difference that you pointed out colour noise in D750. With Z6 we can easily not do bracketing on simple shots where the difference is not much and just pull up shadows in post processing.
    Great discussion you did on AF. Loved the 90% coverage on Z6. Yes Nikon withdrew d9, d21, d51, 3D Tracking but as you said Z6 is much simpler and hardly anyone can tell when they last used those dynamic points. In Z6 we'd instead simply select Dynamic AF and let the camera decide between the points like 9,21,51 etc. instead of scratching our head on which one should I select.
    Loved that you discussed about the practical battery performance instead of theorical.
    Thanks a lot again.
    I just have one question, two card slots gives me a peace of mind on D750. What do you feel about XQD Cards on Z6? I know XQD's are much faster and more fail-safe than SD. But I just wanted to know your experience.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the long and encouraging feedback. Re single xqd slot, since I use it for weddings I would definitely prefer if its dual slot for peace of mind. But I minimise the risk by shooting with both cameras and multiple cards, so in case of a card failure it still won't be devastating. Xqd card also appears to be a lot more reliable than sd card but nothing is 100% safe.

    Good review! I sold my D750 a while back, purchased the D500 and the D5 which I sold. I just purchased the Z6 and it is better than the critics claimed it is. I am not a wedding photographer so one card slot is not a critical issue. The high iso on the Z6 is easily one stop better than the D750 and I like the newer color science on the Z6. I wasn't able to use IBIS with stills on the Z6 with my F mount Nikon lenses but it worked with the Z 24-70mm lens. I also own some Tamron lenses and I need to wail until Tamron releases firmware to be able to use the lenses. I am going to test this camera out with some dance shoots coming up and I feel confident that the Z6 will be a capable camera, with some caveats, until the pro version of the 24 megapixel mirrorless camera is introduced.

      Richard Wong I am glad that you asked me about IBIS. I tried again some of my lenses on the Z6 and IBIS does indeed work with non VR F mount lenses. When I use my VR Nikon lenses the VR isn't highlighted in the menu for some reason but it still works. I have an old Sigma non VR 135 F/2.8 AF macro lens that will focus in manual mode with focus peaking and IBIS works just fine. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

    Thank you so much for this video Richard. I am a long time Nikon shooter (D810 and D850). As the birthdays have piled up on my body, I am feeling the need for a smaller lighter camera. I had considered the D750 but the difference in weight and size was not enough to cause me to go to the D750. I had some concerns about the IQ and the auto focus on the Z6 and your video totally eliminated those concerns. Now I am totally excited to get the Z6. superb and very detailed. I agree with everything but I think you are the only reviewer that said the Z6 autofocus is as good or better than the D750. Most others say moving subjects, the D750 (and most Nikon DSLRs) are still better.

  • @makepaladinsmehagain8493
    @makepaladinsmehagain8493 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice comparison. Regarding battery life; if you use liveview a lot on the D750, you will run out of battery MUCH quicker than if you just use the viewfinder. I would only get about around 400 shots or so on a full charged D750 battery if using LiveView exclusively.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh definitely! Live view on Nikon DSLR (or any DSLR) also drain battery very quickly. But the difference is, with DSLRs, most people don't really use live view extensively unless you are shooting video. You can just shoot with ovf. But you have no such option with a mirrorsless camera, either the EVF or LCD use a lot of power.

  • @garylau6676
    @garylau6676 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You have forgotten the d750 got a pop up flash. It very useful n can act as commander unit. Actually, even the technology have improve now a day, but d750 still better than z6, z7 and d850(imo). Reasons: 1) two same SD card slot. 2) pop up flash, act as commander too. 3) dynamic range still d best. 4) price is cheaper. You can think of many others facts; of course only video is not that good. But in term of photography --the BEST. What do you think??

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree the flash could be important to certain users, and certain situation. And of course the dual card slots and the fact that the d750 is quite heavily discounted these days so definitely good value for money. But I would say the improved overall image quality, speed (burst speed and clearing buffer), the live view, benefits of EVF are some of the good reasons to get a z6 even if you don't care about video.

    I auditioned the Z6 today with my Nikon DX 17-55mm F2.8, Nikon 85mm 1.8g, Nikon 40mm 2.8 and my sigma 70-200mm 2.8.
    It is a good camera but noticeably slower to focus than my D500. The face autofocusing and stability in video mode is excellent.
    Overall it's a good camera but should be priced at £1999 including the adaptor

      @Borrowed Time Yea, I've used the ND filters, and the problem I have is the good ones cost as much as a new lens (exaggeration but not by much) and the cheap ones have a color cast that just isn't clean to pull off on portraits no matter what you do, not to mention the loss of quality, so I'm better off with the speed.

    How is the mounting on a tripod situation? I read about it possibly being challenging when you are using a FTP adapter. I would be shooting mainly portraits, indoors (low light no speedlight) or in studio.
    Also, I currently have the d5300 and looking to upgrade. Budget about under $1500 US. I only have 1 full frame lens and mostly DX lenses. Before I start purchasing more fx lenses for moving into full frame cameras, should I go ahead and go mirrorless and buy Z lenses instead, or would buying Fx lenses be a wider move? I'm trying to think ahead and what will be most useful to me in the next 5 years, since eventually it all will end up mirrorless. Thank you for your review

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Carla, tripod is ok with the ftz adaptor. While the adaptor would make it hard/impossible to use with some bigger tripod plates, you could always just mount on the adaptor itself and that would work fine? Unless I am missing something but personally I have no problem at all. And re your upgrade path... The new Z lenses proved to be much superior to the equivalent F mount lenses, optical wise. So I would suggest buying new Z mount lenses if possible, unless you can pick up some F lenses at good price. You could also consider the z50 if most of your lenses are DX.. then slowly migrate to the full frame Z lenses.

    Thanks for the video! The tradeoff with low-light AF mode is that it's slower, I think it only works in AF-S, and it can lower the refresh rate of the EVF. So it's good for something like shooting landscapes at night on a tripod, but they probably disable it by default in case some people don't want those tradeoffs.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I read in the manual under low-light AF "Choose On for more accurate focus under low-light conditions when AF-S is selected for focus mode, but note that camera may require more time to focus.". But based on your experience, maybe it doesn't slow down as long as there's adequate light. It could be that it only kicks in when the light drops below a certain level.

    I think that 30 minutes is fine for someone who is seriously considering changing from a D750(which I am) and I think to make a large change of system then you should wisely spend a lot more than 30 minutes of your time to investigate..... If you're just kind of looking around and wondering, then 30 minutes is probably too long and you could have made a 5 minute video with bullet points for those people!..... As for a change, no for me right now... reasons? 1. I want the redundancy of 2 cards in camera 2. battery life 3. I travel with two cameras for redundancy but use a d750 and d7200 for versatility-so cards and batteries work for both cameras. If I switch to a Z6 then I need at least 2 more batteries, 2 more cards, and another battery charger more to carry and less redundancy). 4. if I replace the D7200 then I won't get the extra reach from my lenses....5. At 60 years old it's easier to have two cameras with the same system/menu to remember than 2 cameras with different systems/menus... . thanks...You made my decision to hang on to the D750/7200 combination for awhile a little easier!....

    I am a disgrunled (at canon) eos 80d shooter. I have been wanting to upgrade to both mirrorless and full frame, but got side tracked and was looking more toward d750 and sony a7iii. I read rumors aboug a possible d760, replacing d750, but maybe z6 is it. ??. Canon's offering seem to be a recycling of old technology. Now how the camers fits my hand is a huge concern. I wear xxl gloves, comfortably. The sony a73 most likely is out for my hand size. The focus points you mentioned with z6 troubles me. I want my next camera to be at least as good as my 80d in fps and shutter speed up to 1/8000 sec. I want mg next camers to have pixel sizd that does not limit my aperture to f/5.8 due to defraction (80d info). I prefer to eliminate the need to microadjust my lenses to the camera's auto focus (reason for going mirrorless). I learned quite a lot using canon enthusiast models, eos 40d and eos 80d. I also lesrned to dislike Canon.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey Daniel, the rolling shutter test. I originally was going to show both 4k and 1080p footage from the z6. unfortunately I screw up the 4k test footage so in the end they are both 1080p from Z6 and D750. 4K mode seems to have slightly more rolling shutter effect. Having said that, it's not visible during normal usage. I only noticed it during the rolling shutter test or when I flip the camera front and back when trying to shoot some vlogging footage

    Is the 1080p better on the Z6 - Ive heard it isnt because the D750 is optimised for 1080 and the Z6 is optimised for 4K. The reason I ask is I mainly shoot 1080p 50fps on my D750.

      Hi Terry, do you need more resolution? If you don't I would recommend the Z6 as it's much better value for money camera and also more versatile with better high ISO and also better video. D810 is nice but if you do landscapes and some wildlife I think the D500 might be slightly better if you want to wait for the next Z iteration because it's a newer camera with a great sensor and crop + high FPS is better for wildlife. The autofocus system on the D500 is also a lot better than the one on D810 too.

      @@TheRealRichardWong Alright, so I have owned the D750 for a few years now and I enjoy it. I've been shooting low light live music concerts and I have been rather hit or miss on successful shots, either from iso noise or just never seem to have the subjects I want to focus on in those centered 51 points. Focus recomposition isn't always a possibility when your subjects are jumping around all over the place; not to mention when you're shooting from the crowd of excited fans. The z6 appears to be the answer with the full coverage of AF points and better ISO handling as well as IBIS. I'd feared upgrading and regretting leaving the D750 behind simply because I know it's been a great camera for me every other time and so I feared the z6 would fail me. After watching this video, I feel more confident that D750 to z6 is an improvement. Sure, the D850 or z7 is/are/maybe better; but I can't afford those and ignorance is bliss. Economically, the z6 is my logical upgrade and it appears it will suit me well. The battery life and single slot doesn't bother me at all. I never shot for backup all these years and if it comes down to it, i'll just bring 2 batteries with me if I shoot too much in one session. Thoughts?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brannone6356 I would actually argue the Z6 is better camera than the Z7 for concerts/events..etc You don't need such high resolution and its actually a bit of liablity when you are shooting live events where lighting is uncontrolled, you don't have a tripod and everything moves so it would be very hard for you to get the sharpest possible photo to justify the higher resolution. Also the Z6 has better high ISO performance than the Z7 which is a plus.
      The biggest downside of Z6 compare to the D750 is the battery life and single card but you don't seem to be bothered by either. I've shoot a number of events including weddings with Z6 and a DSLR and I have to say I'm now shooting 70%+ of photos using the Z6 because I just love shooting with it more than the DSLR.
      This is a recent wedding I shot with Z6 and a Df.. about 70% of photos were shot on Z6.

      @@ZK2006 One advantage of shooting concert with Z6 (or any mirrorless camera) is that you can preview the exposure, and adjust accordingly in realtime. nice video - I have had and used Nikon for a long time - both crop and FF - had the D750 for some time - and yes very happy with image quality and low light performance -
    but really disliked that they used very slow Contrast AF when in Live View - and the D750 was not practical for video
    So the question was - was I going to wait on Canon or Nikon for FF Mirrorless or go with Sony FF Mirrorless -
    I had the A7 for some time - and yes liked the Image Quality but hated it as far as shutter noice and it was slow and menu etc was not nice
    But then came the A7rII and A9 - yes big improvements - but very pricy - but then came the A7 III - at the right price and loaded with good features - very nice Eye AF - good video options - fast AF and improved menu -
    So I opted to go with Sony - and I am glad I did - as I could not see using the Z6 as no Dual Card Slots - and I did not want to go with Canon with no IBIS -
    Yes I have the Fuji XT2's and XT3 - and yes no IBIBS but they are much lighter - and I do not use them for all things -
    mainly use them with fast primes
    Hope Nikon ups their game soon with Dual Card Slots and Eye AF

      @@tomariko D4 is a still very capable cameras as it was built on top of decades of experience and many generations of refinements. However, when I was using the D4 with the D5 side by side, it was still quite easy to feel how much better the D5 is. Just the autofocus system itself is a huge difference.
      But on the other hand, the A7II is largely the same as the A7. The main differences are the IBIS (which A7 doesn't have), software optimisation to the autofocus system and a slightly improved grip. In other words it's largely the same as the first generation A7 camera. I have used both camera quite a lot and own the A7 myself, and honestly they are very far from being mature products with so many issues and limitations from the very slow and unreliable autofocus system (even when shooting in single AF mode), the camera locks up completely when buffer is full, the poor ergonomics just to name a few but the list can go on and on.
      The whole a7 series only becomes a lot better with the release of a7RII with it's brand new autofocus system and many other improvements. And now the gen III is again a big improvement over the A7RII. But anyway, IMHO there is no comparison between the A7II and the Z6. The Z6 would be a lot better in terms of autofocus, body design/ergonomics, video recording, EVF, LCD screen, buffer clear speed and of course the image quality.

    Hello everyone, i am an amateur photographer and decided to go from my D5500 to a full-frame and D750, however i was checking also the Z6 and i am quite in a dilemma due to performance on AF and night sensivity of the two sensors..Video is not quite my interest but photography.. Would you recommend me to start with the D750 or push to the Z6 ? Anyone that used both of them?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would go for the Z6 because i personally believe the Z/mirrorless is Nikon's future and there are a few advantages comes with this new platform. On The other hand, the biggest advantage with the D750 is it's long battery life and dual card slot.

    It's funny that you say "with this old lens, suddenly I now have 3, 4 or 5 stops stabilisation". Pentax has had stabilisation in their DSLRs for a long time. So I get it when Pentax users kind of laugh about this. But they don't make mirrorless cameras, so the only way you can use focus peaking is with live view. And Pentax just doesn't cut it as well wrt AF (which is why I left the brand).

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter, Oh yes definitely. You can also use on a Sony a7 ii onwards with adaptor. But for Nikon users, this is the first time (including the z7) you have IBIS

    • @toddysurcharge771
      @toddysurcharge771 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Their color science is garbage too....and yes even Raw's are impacted by a camera's color science not just JPG's.

    • @starbase218
      @starbase218 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard Wong I was about to say that Pentax had IBIS in their DSLRs much longer, but actually Konica Minolta (and thus Sony) seems to have been the first at that, too. For what it’s worth, anyway.

    To me it doesn't look like that Noise Reduction on the Z6 is turned off, neither on the photos in this video, nor in samples you provided on your website. Z6 samples look too smooth and clean on extreme ISOs and lack details compared to D750. They look like standard Nikon SOOC jpegs with NR turned on.

      Hey Gordon, you are correct. Sorry I made a mistake and the Z6 photos indeed had NR set to "normal" when converted to JPG. I've now re-converted the Z6 RAW to JPG with NR to off. Unfortunately I can't update the video but you can checkout the photos on my website. Apologise for that. www.photobyrichard.com/reviewbyrichard/nikon-z6-vs-d750-review/

      @gordondraskic4348 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRealRichardWong Where did you convert them, in the camera? I'm asking because Lightroom still doesn't support Z6 RAWs. The only real comparison would be to take RAW files and compare them in Lightroom, or export them from LR as jpegs without any editing. In this case you would have to convert Z6's RAWs into DNG first so you could open them in LR.

    I really wish to upgrade so badly, but that 1 card slot is a deal breaker for me. I cannot tell you how many times the D750 has saved me because of its backup option into the second card. Sometimes I’m shooting a whole week straight with up to 1000 images per day. You get the point. I cannot get more frustrated with Nikon! That decision has held back so many people like me. Why Nikon, why?!

    7:39 d750 actually has low iso modes (below 100), does the z6 have those settings as well?
    8:23 they both have high speed sync.
    9:14 the z6 iso does not go up to 2 million...
    dude... lol you need to fix these points

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, thanks for the feedback. 1. Yes z6 also has. But low iso is basically half the pixel brightness during post processing for jpg so you are losing dynamic. 2. Yes but high speed sync reduce the power output of your flash so that's why Nikon give you option to enable/disable it as not everyone wants it. Also a lot of non Nikon flash / studio strobe can't support it. 3. my mistake (and I have added a correction note soon after I publish the video)

    • @pjc3163

      Sometimes it may not be just about money. But the inconvenience of having to carry multiple batteries/charger when you go on a short trip and want to travel light? Also if you are shooting events, you will have to keep an eye on the battery more regularly to avoid flat battery at cruical time. First world problems I know :)
